Team for leeds?

I also don't want to see any first teamers. I don't really know who has been impressing in the reserves, but maybe even chuck in a couple of the academy boys, like buchtmann (sp?). I'm also not sure if any of these have gone out on loan..

-------------Cavalieri------------
Darby----Ayala----Greek---Aurelio
-------------Plessis--------------
El Zhar-----Spearing-----Buchtmann
-------------Pacheco-------------
--------------Ngog----------------

try and bring agger and pacheco at some point.

That's most likely the team we'll see. Agger should get a few minutes, as should El Zhar if fit. I also expect a few first teamers on the bench.

Agger possible for Cup match

Daniel Agger could be included in Liverpool’s squad for tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie at Leeds.

The Danish international has been out all season following a back operation, but returned to full training last week.

Liverpool are expected to make several changes from the side that won 3-2 at West Ham on Saturday, with full-back Fabio Aurelio standing by for his first start of the season after a knee problem.

Liverpool provisional squad: Cavalieri, Degen, Agger, Kyrgiakos, Dossena, Aurelio, Riera, Spearing, Babel, Voronin, Ngog, Reina, Benayoun, Lucas, Plessis, Darby, Kelly, Eccleston, Ayala.

Saw Leeds on the Football League show.

They're pretty good at set-pieces and are in good form. Should be an alright match.

That's us conceeding two then.

I still don't see the practical value of giving a 'reserve' keeper, who never plays in the reserves, an odd game behind a makeshift back four in a very much weakened team. Is he supposed to impress, or absorb the adrenalin like a battery on re-charge for some more important match several months ahead? If he plays at all it may as well be with a settled back four that might one day need to adapt to an injured or suspended Reina's absence. Leeds are a very confident, in-form and aggressive side. This squad is so purfunctory we might as well just forget to turn up.

Yes I agree. These games seem to end up being used just to fulfill promises made by the manager to squad players.

To get any benefit out of these games it would be best to have mostly the usual first team but with a couple of reserves and youngsters thrown in. That way these guys would find it easier to come in when first teamers are injured.

If we put out a team of reserves I suspect we will lose this game. Not the end of the World if we do of course but I would rather we didn't!

Do we reckon that's an official squad? I thought Kelly was in Egypt for the u20's?

Chelski, Arsenal and the Mancs try to win this, even with a few reserves added to the mix. It's a cup with a final at Wembley - one that quite often acts as a surprisingly good catalyst for more success later in the season. I really dislike the idea of completely tearing up the usual team sheet for these matches. Most of our regulars don't look fit enough as it is, they don't need a break - it's September for chrissakes. And I don't care what the 'game today' is supposed to be like - the way to make a second choice keeper ready for the first team is to play him at least occasionally in the reserves, not once or twice a year in shambolic cup ties that bring embarrassment to a great club. If this is going to be treated as a reserve match, let McMahon pick his usual settled side and get on with it. They'd fare better than this high profile rag bag.

OFFICIALS

Referee: A.G Wiley (Staffordshire) :🙂

Why do you care about the Carling Cup so much?

I mean half of the posters on this site and on others moan about international friendlies, with our players having to play meaningless games for their national teams.

This game against Leeds is exactly that. Well not exactly.. but it is meaningless.

I'd be real happy if Rafa announced that he'd only play Torres and Gerrard (edit: and Carra) in the CL and league games this season.

Would love to see Pacheco for 90 mins, probably wont happen.

According to t'ut Yorkshire Post it won't, he's not even in the squad, but Aggers back.

I don't care for it 'so much'. I want my club to win every match, not throw any away. And I don't want promising reserves to be on the receiving end of 'not good enough' headlines because too many of them were thrown in at the same time. The last time we reached the final of this competition we went on to do rather well in the Champions League with a far inferior squad, and so did Chelski, and so did the mancs, so this Olympian disdain for a supposedly first team tournament is rather more contentious, I'd say, than the desire to live up to this club's high standards.

I understand all that, but our squad is threadbare as it is.. Why risk first teamers getting injured against the "aggressive" Leeds team (who surely would be up for it)?

I'd like to see:

-----------------Cavalieri----------------

Degen----Kyrgiakos-----Agger-----Aurelio

-----------Spearing----Lucas---------------

------------Pacheco Yossi----------------------
Babel--------------Ngog-------------Riera

Because a settled experienced side is much more likely to cope with a hungry and aggressive team than too many kids, in an unfamilar set up. Take out Torres and Gerrard, fine, but add no more than three reserves in positions where they'll benefit from playing alongside experienced players, then bring on a couple more if we're in control. Or just ask McMahon to pick his usual settled reserve team and Rafa can bugger off for the evening. One or the other. The 'bung them all in and hope something magical happens' policy won't help the reserves, it won't help the club and it won't help the fans. It's just lazy and illogical.

Pacheco's not in the squad. U20 WC? Surprised Reina's travelling for bench duty. Is our 3rd choice/reserve goalie injured?

Pacheco is injured, that's why he didn't play for the reserves either.

Oh I see. Guess we're unlikely to see too much surprises in the starting line up. Should be more or less similar to what's been posted on here. Would like to see the likes of Darby and Spearing starting ahead of Degen and Plessis though.

I reckon Rafa will start:

Cavalieri
Degen
Kyrgiakos
Ayala
Me
Spearing
Plessis
Babel
Riera
Voronin
N'Gog

Subs:
Aurelio for me
Agger for Ayala
Lucas for Plessis

We will win one nil thanks to N'Gog, but it will be a very scrappy and disjointed match. I think.

Plessis got a red card last week. I think he's ineligible. I've lost track of how these rules and regs work these days!

Think it will come into effect something like after 7 days? As in not the immediate, subsequent match.
