The question of who Trent Alexander-Arnold's backup should be at Liverpool has been a long-standing one. Ever since he emerged as the club's first-choice right-back, there simply haven’t been any players who have been adequately capable of filling his shoes.
It's a debate that also doesn't look like it will end any time soon.
Conor Bradley has impressed in pre-season and has done very well playing as an inverted full-back, but there are question marks in terms of whether he is capable of making the step up to
Liverpool after only playing League One football in his career so far.
And this
Alexander-Arnold debate is also not eased by his recent transition into midfield. Having filled a hybrid role during the latter stages of last season, the academy graduate has featured as a number six in pre-season in the absence of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
The path between Red Bull and Liverpool is well-trodden now. This summer,
Dominik Szoboszlai became the fifth player to have played for a Red Bull club to sign for Liverpool, and relations are thought to be solid between the Reds and both RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, easing negotiations.
Liverpool clearly can't afford to spend a lot of money on a potential backup, which is why going to a club like Salzburg, which doesn't command extortionate fees and whom the club has done business with before, is ideal.
In the Austrian side's current right-back, Liverpool also has an ideal fit in terms of what the club is looking for. 20-year-old Bosnian international Amar Dedić is quick and direct on the ball and composed in possession.
Very adept with both feet, Dedić is capable of cutting into the middle and making long, Alexander-Arnold-esque switches across the pitch.

Last season he made seven goal contributions for Salzburg, which is not the greatest return, but Dedić's underlying numbers were quite solid with the Bosnian averaging 2.52 crosses per 90 in the Austrian Bundesliga and racking up 2.63 progressive runs, which was the most out of any full-back in the league as per Wyscout.
Crucially, he also showed himself to be a strong defender. Dedić won 63.74 per cent of his defensive duels and averaged an impressive 7.64 possession-adjusted interceptions.
Still raw but highly regarded, recently he even wore the armband for his team during the club's first Bundesliga game of the season despite only being 20 years old, which shows just how highly the club regards him.
Capable of also playing as a left-back, due to being comfortable with both feet, Dedić is an exceptional talent and, because of his versatility, he could be a valuable addition to Jürgen Klopp's squad, and the club should think about bringing him to Anfield either this summer or in the future. Not only could he be an ideal backup as a full-back, but he could also free Alexander-Arnold up to make a more permanent transition into midfield. [/article]
