Brendan Rodgers plans to give Luis Suárez a wide berth at Liverpool

• Suárez will return on the wing after 10-match ban
• Sturridge will stay as main striker with Coutinho behind

Liverpool's manager, Brendan Rodgers, has decided Luis Suárez will operate out wide when he returns from a 10-match ban, with Daniel Sturridge immovable as Liverpool's front-line striker.

Suárez has two matches left to serve of his suspension for biting the Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic and will make his return in the Capital One Cup clash at Manchester United on 25 September. But he is expected to feature on the flanks for Liverpool, with Philippe Coutinho moving into the centre behind the lone striker, as Rodgers leaves Sturridge to continue his devastating early-season form for Liverpool.

The England international has scored five goals in four Liverpool victories so far this season, the latest coming in Sunday's 1-0 defeat of Manchester United. Combined with Suárez's protracted efforts to move from Anfield this summer, the Liverpool manager believes the Uruguay international must force his way back as the focal point of the team's attack and that Sturridge is established in his position. The new loan signing from Chelsea, Victor Moses, is expected to operate on the opposite wing to Suárez once the striker returns from his suspension.

Rodgers, meanwhile, has maintained that Fabio Borini has a future at Anfield despite allowing the Italian forward to join Sunderland on a season-long loan. Borini was Rodgers' first signing as Liverpool manager, in a £10.5m deal from Roma, but struggled for form and with injuries last season.

The Liverpool manager explained: "He had a stop-start season last year with his injuries and I just felt this year he needed to go and play football. With Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suárez, Iago Aspas and some of the other attacking players, that might have been limited.

"I have a real belief in Fabio – he is a talent and we've seen that on occasions, but he needs to be playing regularly to demonstrate that talent. We had a host of clubs wanting to take him, but with Sunderland having the Italian connection there and being a big club where he can go and play, I'm sure he'll get the chance to shine and we'll look closely at his development this year."

I expected that. Although there is a good argument for positioning your best creative and goal-scoring player "in the hole", because that's where most goals originate from. Maybe Coutinho and Suarez will rotate between the middle and left wing and Moses, Aspas and Sterling will compete for the RW position.

I was gonna post that article but then I realised that there are no quotes from the man himself in it, so I really don't know if its speculation or bull.
But it does seem logical to leave Sturridge where he is.

We're so fluid at times that it's almost immaterial where they line up on paper, but I'm pleased to see that Sturridge is staying the point of the attack. He deserves it - not only for his goals, but he has the physique and the all-round game to play the position more effectively in an attacking unit than Suarez.

Not that I'm slating him or forgotten how good Suarez is; he was devastating as the central striker last year, but it was a one man show of brilliance, and our attack has evolved for the better since then, which means Luis will have find how he slots into it. To Luis' credit I don't think he's ever moaned about playing wide or as a number 10 in the past. He'll just want to play and score goals.

It really is nice to think how will Suarez, Coutinho and Sturridge line up. It's one of them lovely problems I spend hours considering in work and it gets me through the day.

Suarez usually seems to attack by moving into the area from the left or right side so I doubt it will make much difference,

Said about this the other day, Suarez is naturally left, Studge naturally right so it makes total sense to play to a 1-2 with Coutinho in the hole.

The player's might start out wide but they won't remain there. On paper it might say wide left for Suarez but he will find space all over the pitch. We'll see a lot of movement from our attacking players and hopefully interchanging as a unit.

As long as he's not spending much time on the wing, that's fine, and its how he plays for Uruguay. I recall some game last season when he played wide left for Sturridge and I was incredibly annoyed watching Suarez burn himself out, including far too much time in our own half, while Sturridge looked like couldn't be arsed.

Which match was it last season he had to drop back into a left sided position? He was good, did the defensive stuff really well but was a little silly with the ball, trying dribbles and flicks in his own half which put is under pressure when they didn't work.

He'll have to use his brain a bit more if he's playing closer to his own goal but it'll be good to have him back and it makes sense to make Sturridge the main man.

Could be some sort of right sided / coming inside role for him with Glen Johnson giving the width. Rodgers has a lot of options to choose from.

Yeah one thing I love about this team is the options we have.

There are still 3 MF positions for him to slot into .. with Lucas and Stevie.

Actually, based on the article it seems like we will have a front four of Sturridge, Suarez, Coutinho and Moses so that leaves on 2 midfield slots.

Although, it seems that we will start rotating the squad now based on opponents, injuries and form.

I just knew I had forgotten someone there ... time for the a.m. coffee infusion.

I like the way they used quotes about Borini going on loan to write an article titled "Brendan Rodgers plans to give Luis Suárez a wide berth at Liverpool"

It was against Spurs.

If this plays out imagine the boost to Sturridge's confidence? Mind you his confidence has to already be supremely high what with his start to the season, but keeping his role as striker in favor of a player that would walk into any team in the world is such a statement.

I'm pretty sure it was Arsenal away. We were defending so deep, he played as a left back at times. He still managed to create something even from that position, but in general I thought it was criminal to use him like this. It's like hiring Picasso to paint the fence.

What happened that he had to play there? I can't remember

They all move around anyway, so it's not really an out and out wide position, Sturridge drops deep and wide throughout games, and I'm sure Luis will do the same.

No doubt this will be the latest fad for the press to jump on though, "Suarez unhappy playing second fiddle to Sturridge", etc.

It's true for the attack sure, but it's the amount of work he needs to do when defending.
Nothing we can do though. He's worked that position plenty of times before for club and country so he knows what to do.
And it's far better having him play in the team complimenting Sturridge than to put Sturridge, now an obvious centre forward, shunted to the side to do te donkey work.
What's great is knowing that should any injuries or suspension come in for one world class striker, we have another world class striker to take his place.
Not only that, both are versatile enough to play anywhere te manager asks of them.
No wonder why Rodgers wanted Carrol out.

I read the thread title wrong and thought... Hang on Steady on...

(Return of the King)

We where calling him a cunt last week...

It's way too early to call Sturridge world-class. When he leads the line for us for the whole season and scores 25+ goals - then we can start the conversation.

Hendo and stevie should rotate. Stevie should not play every game anymore

Excite about this news
Gerrard is still by far our best midfielder, if he's fit he plays. Henderson can rotate with lucas.

I can't see suarez playing wide at all, that's just a waste of his talent. He'll play instead of aspas, and aspas pretty much plays in the middle behind sturridge. I can see suarez roaming as usual hurting the opposition dragging them all over the place.
