Report: Luis Suarez to have meniscus surgery, World Cup status up in the air
Kyle Bonn May 22, 2014, 12:22 AM EDT

The Uruguay camp has been thrown a very sudden and heavy curveball, as reports come through that star striker Luis Suarez has picked up a knee injury in training today.
According to Uruguayan journalist Martin Charquero, Suarez felt discomfort in national team training, and tests later on revealed meniscus damage.
He will have surgery as soon as possible, and according to Charquero he should be ready for the World Cup.
However, recovery from a typical meniscus procedure often takes 4-6 weeks, so Suarez would be pushing those limits, and it’s hard to imagine doctors at this time could definitively say he’ll be ready to go.
It is unknown how extensive his surgery will be. Meniscus repair is almost always arthroscopic, but still has the month or so recovery time. At the very least, the procedure will cut down on his ability to train and work with the first team leading up to the opening match.
No question his country will be sweating his recovery, with so little time to go until play gets under way in Brazil. Much of Uruguay’s hopes ride on the Liverpool star who won the Premier League’s Player of the Year, nearly leading the Reds to a surprise Premier League title.
Suarez is the focal point of a deadly Uruguay attack also featuring Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan, and his miss would be a massive blow considering both those players are most dangerous when played out on the wing with Suarez in the middle.
Uruguay’s incredibly difficult group includes England, Costa Rica, and Italy.
If Suarez is unable to go, he will join the long list of stars in the European game that have suffered injuries eliminating them from the World Cup. That list includes Diego Costa, Radamel Falcao, Christian Benteke, Kevin Strootman, Jay Rodriguez, and Theo Walcott.

What an awful way to cap off a fantastic season. I'll be gutted for him if he doesn't make the world cup, he'd be devastated.

Sucks for Suarez, sucks for Uruguay and sucks for us.

He will want to play in the world cup even if not 100% fit. Doing so may worsen his injury and may see him out for a longer period, potentially keeping him out of our start of the season.
Shit news.

Yeah, great news.... star striker spends summer crocked but it's okay as that's got to be better than him actually playing football

'summer' is now only 4-6 weeks? Suarez was visibly tired by season's end - he's played every game and trains like a dog. A proper break can do him good.

You typed this post like a cunt. Just saying.

Problem here is he gets rushed back, doesn't train properly, plays the first match at his usual intensity and fucks up his hamstring or something.

I think people are overrating Uruguay.
Disastrous Olympics.
Decent confederation cup
Barely qualified to the world cup ( had to beat an Asian team to qualify)
They have a poor defence, a poor midfield and a world class attack.
I really don't think they'll do too good.

Waits for "you're winding everyone up post"

Yep. The fuckers will be desperate to play, & he'd play in a wheelchair, so that was my first thought too.

how does this work these days ? Are we paying the bulk of his wages when he's on international duty ? regardless , surely he can't do anything without our ok...i'd get our docs out there asap .

You're all feeding the wanker.

@Modo is laughing at you like a big, fat, retarded fisherman.

Stop feeding the wanker.

If you get wound up by anything anyone says you don't belong on the Internet you soft twats.

Anyway 6 months in this bargain contract is beginning to look shaky

Haha, yeah right. He cant finish aswell the overrated shitebag.

Anyway, keyhole surgery will apparantly result in a quick recovery like Terry had a while back.

You need lessons from modo. Your windup is too obvious.

This.

It may also sow the seeds of discontent. No WC may mean he starts dreaming of Real and a CL final instead.

Prandelli and Hodgson just heard the news

A knee injury also potentially puts you off from investing 80 million quid though. I think with this, like the biting episode, there may be a silver lining in the cloud.

Although I don't want him seriously injured, I'd be over the moon if he missed the world cup. England have more of a chance, and we have more of a chance of keeping him.
The flip side is, that if he does leave, and has a great world cup, that could seriously bump the price up.
