Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door*FEE AGREED*

Is it strange that this hasn't gone through yet? When is the medical supposed to be taking place? I'd have thought terms would have already been thrashed out. I hope there's not a problem because of the Torres shit.

Yeah just seen it now, cheers Ong. Glad this looks like finally being sorted, hopefully we can persuade Torres to stay, or just make the fucker stay, whichever.

There were pictures of him earlier today from Schipol on the offal Ajax site

BBC's Tim Vickery suggested that Liverpool had invested wisely.

“If I had £23m in my bank account I wouldn’t have too many qualms about spending it on Suarez,†Vickery told BBC Radio 5 live.

“Everybody wins. Ajax played the transfer game poker very well. Liverpool have paid top whack but they have got a striker who can play across the line."

it is, but 19mil up front, the rest will prob be based on appearances etc

5 and a half years though....fucking long
[/quote]

I may be wrong, & probably am, but could the long contract have something to do with spending rules coming in next year?

I'm fairly sure it hamstrings clubs to tying up players with high value contracts, which means we'll more of these.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door*FEE AGREED*

It's all good with long contracts though. Can't see any harm in that.

Degen? Diao? Kewell? Jovanovic? I'm not saying their contracts were long, necessarily, but they were too long!

There is a massive massive difference in quality though mate. He'll be an asset, one of our stars.

He's also young.

I'm not sure why anyone would listen to Tim Vickery anymore.

On Lucas..

"These moves are always a gamble, but I think this is a good one.

He's an exciting player of a type that Brazilian football hasn't produced too many of recently. Of late their central midfielders have tended to be 'holders' who sit and allow the full-backs to push forward.

Lucas is different. He's a big, blonde figure whose power and physical strength comes with attacking ability.

He can pass well and loves to rumble forward. He gets on the scoresheet both with blistering shots from range and from bursting beyond the strikers.

You can certainly imagine him playing alongside Javier Mascherano, for example."

Oh OK, I thought you were talking generally rather than specifically about Suarez.

Maybe there were two Lucases in Brazil at the time and we signed the wrong one by accident?

There's always hits and misses, aren't there? Well, at least some of his other views on South American football are worth a read. Anyway, he's not along in thinking Lucas is 'good'. Benitez springs to mind. (And I see that in the link, he got the Paletta one 'right' too 😛 )

Forget his opinion of how good he thought he'd be, it's his description of him which most concerns me.. as it couldn't be more wrong..

"A big, blonde figure whose power and physical strength comes with attacking ability."

That line alone makes me believe he'd never watched him play before and was just making stuff up.

there could be another, very dull, accounting reason. i'm not sure exactly what figures uefa will look at for their FFP thing, but if it's just the standard annual accounts, then one of the key figures in the profit/loss calculation will be transfer fee amortisations, and the longer the contract then the smaller the annual 'cost' of the fee (as fee is spread over length of contract).

could be a possibility.

In fairness, he can only comment on the player he saw in the Gremio shirt. Hindsight would be a wonderful thing. As mentioned, he's had more hits than misses (at least, imo) re SA football/players - and I certainly hope he's right about Suarez too. ;D

Yep, that's pretty much what I was getting at. I didnt quite understand the reasoning (despite my employment figures & calculations bore me to tears) but that sounds a lot like how it was outlined.

It is a bizarre description of Lucas though. I can only imagine that the SA leagues are populated by puny midgets. Vickery's description makes Lucas sound like a powerful physical specimen.

Re: Suarez paves the way for Anfield switch as Babel nears the exit door*FEE AGREED*

On a sidenote, how Suarez has behaved (at least, publicly) deserve a mention, doesn't it? The news (and headlines) coming out has him 'pleading' with de Boer and Ajax for a move and despite the on-going rumours for the past few seasons, haven't heard discontent or grumbling of much sorts during his 4 season stay with Ajax.

Now, that's me getting a little bit over. :-[

Err vickery says we have done a deal everytime we sign someone from south America, speedy Gonzalez Lucas and that paletta bloke

What a steaming pile of shit he was.
