Sturridge

He looked up, saw the spot and put it exactly there. That's some skill set, but we've never doubted that he had it in him to do that. It's his durability that we all doubt. It's good that he's currently injury free but just watch when he gets called up for England.

When last did we have a genuine game changing type of player on the bench? I say leave him there and use him in bursts. He'll be much more use to us off the bench.

What I still don't get is why he only gives him 5 mins

Think it's because in that game we were getting joy with pace down the flanks and breaking through the middle. Sturridge doesn't have the legs to play on the shoulder any more, so klopp tried other subs first to open up more space to see if that would work, and then sturridge was last throw of the dice

Ok that makes more sense.

It doesn't really explain previous 5 min sub appearances. He's difficult for Klopp to shoehorn into his system, because the hardworking, unselfish centre forward/ false 9 is crucial to how we play. Sturridge is the opposite of all of that, but he's probably the most naturally gifted and clinical forward at the club.

But that said, because he can only play central, Klopp probably finds it hard to give him minutes. He should play Napoli.

To be fair, in all other games we were cruising. Why risk an injury prone player just for longer minutes? He's clearly match fit, and in form, so it's not like we're trying to get him up to speed

He did play 70 mins against PSG and 90 mins against Chelsea both mid week.

Lets be honest though, he isnt fit enough to start two games a week at this point.

Exactly.

I've no qualms with him being used sparingly

I think we are in a win win position with Sturridge this season.

I don’t think Klopp would ever use Sturridge as anything more than a squad player / plan B fit or not.

Maybe Sturridge is happy with that maybe he’s not but given that he’s in the last year of his contract he needs to perform this year to prove to everyone he’s worth a good deal.

It could be argued Sturridge deserves more minutes but I would still use him sparingly. As it was said above he's had two starts recently (PSG & Chelsea in the cup). The last thing we want is Sturridge to break down. It's win win for both us and Sturridge really. Complete guesswork but I presume Sturridge was content this season to play a reduced role. He could have move to a lesser club if he wanted more minutes or a guaranteed start but with us he still have an important role to play as we compete for the league and CL.

I called this bullshit in the summer. It was blatantly obvious that he was going to be great this season as his contract is up, and hence we let him go on a free and he's brilliant, or, we give him a new contract and the wind breaks him in half again. So fucking obvious.
Great goal mind.

Still can't get my head round how he scored from there with his left foot. If that was a free kick you'd have a right foot on it because it's basically impossible to do that. Must have watched it a hundred times now.

Yes, it was sort of like a chip, but hit really hard, and then somehow ended up in the top right hand corner of the goal aswell, despite hitting it from the "wrong" side for that to be feasible.

Nobody's saving that, not ever.

I just think it's awesome we have someone stepping in when we're missing the regular goals we've been used from Salah.

Sturridge did similar when Suarez was banned a few years ago.

Love this kid. He scores goals. Simple

His role in the previous title challenge is a bit underrated. People often refer it to as the "Suarez" inspired title challenge but Sturridge set it up in the first 8 games when Suarez was banned. Also crucial contributions - goals as well as assists and amazing forward play.

He's one of the most naturally gifted, thrilling footballer's I've ever seen in a Liverpool shirt.

Sturridge served his purpose against Chelsea, and that is all we can expect from him. I don't think he should start any games against PL/CL opposition unless they are opposition we expect to beat easily. The other three need to play and find a way of playing like they did last season - it is obvious they are being marked very closely now and that is part of the reason why Salah and Mane are finding it harder to score but on the plus side opposition defences cannot dare venture to far forward to support their own midfielders or attack - a prime example of that was PSG.

I read a stat somewhere that Studge goal against West Ham was the first goal any sub has scored under Klopp in the league
