My heart has just sunk on hearing this news, I'm close to tears. I feel sad, very sad. The end of an era, not only for Liverpool FC but for me. I wish him only continued success wherever he goes. YNWA.

Steven Gerrard will announce today he will leave Liverpool FC in the summer – ending the Anfield career of the player many consider to be the club’s greatest ever. The 34-year-old was expected to announce a move to America possibly to Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy.

Seems Steven Gerrard is set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. One of the finest players to have graced the PL. A top, top player.

Gary Lineker El Capitan. #YNWA. Good luck, simply my favourite player of a generation.

Stan Collymore So that's it then, Gerrard is going. What a player he has been for Liverpool. Dragged teams to levels they'd never have reached without him.

Gareth Roberts (The Anfield Wrap) Mark my words Gerrard is the greatest player to have played for LFC. Sad, sad day for everyone connected with the club.

Terry McDermott When Kenny Dalglish retired as a Liverpool player plenty said no-one would come close to touching him as the club's greatest. Gerrard has.

Phil McNulty Just reading the Stevie G news. What an absolute legend. He lived the dream. From Liverpool supporter to Liverpool superhero. Love him.

Paul Dalglish Fulham. Shirt off. Whirling around his head. Believing when so many shrinking violets didn't and couldn't. Flawed, but everything.

Peter Crouch tweeted: “I’ve been fortunate to have played with some top players in my time but Stevie G is easily the best I have played with.”

Liverpool actor David Morrissey simply tweeted a picture of Gerrard with the words: “One of the all time greats.”

The greatest player to put on liverpool shirt Absolutely gutted but it's the right decision for him we can live without him but he better be back.

Seems it's happening. Granted his place in the side now is almost a hinderance but he is an utter legend and will be missed.
Personally, I felt very lucky to see him score a goal live when he came down to Melbourne last year. Something I won't forget.

Funny now looking back at those photos, hes always been a player that seemed carry the weight of the club/world on his shoulders, hes been burdened with so much baggage for so long it must have been claustrophobic for him at times growing up in the team he supported becoming its star and captain. Hes rarely seemed to enjoy himself over the past 17years, never really played with a smile on his face. The post goal celebrations always looked to be more relief than joy. Where he sits in the all time Liverpool players list is a pub argument but there has probably never been a more important player at the club, what the last 10 to 15 years would have been like without him doesnt bear thinking about.

It is gutting. Such a big part of my LFC life, and he's off

No doubt I'll miss him.

I have just had a premonition.

Liverpool will get to a final, probably league cup. The commentators will go on and on about this being the last chance for silverware. The build up with will hyperbolic overload. During the game all attention will be on Gerrard. They will score two first. We will come out the second half all guns a blazing. Henderson will get a tap in and its game on! We will push and push, passing it loads just outside the box. Unfortunately Sakho will make a mistake when they are on the counter in the final ten minutes making it 3-1. Gerrard will have one last shot over the bar and we will loose..........
