I never understood the outrage over high wages.. If anything, in the grand scheme of things, considering the amount of money the top clubs make, it could be argued they're underpaid.
For the size of their contribution to the club's success, they get a very small piece of the pie.
Who deserves the money more? Ian Ayre or Sterling?
It's clear who makes more for the club.
Sorry but I can't agree with this at all. Small piece of the pie !?!? Seriously ?!
Firstly who invests in the club and risks their own money ?
Secondly salaries paid by the clubs in the PL are in the region of 50-65% of the club's income (higher for some, I think QPR ?). That is ridiculous. The salaries I pay to my employees account for around 35% of the company's gross income, much higher than that I couldn't afford. Now this of course varies by industry but I do pay high sales commissions.
As far as LFC is concerned then to raise salaries in line with income could be suicidal - imagine paying them in line with PL,CL,TV and sponsorship income .. and then it decreases dramatically for whatever reason.
Salaries across the board should be lower as a percentage, unfortunately the only way to do that now is to have a pan-European cap on salaries and then let them gradually subside as PL,CL,TV and sponsorship income increases over the years.
I dont understand the way contracts work at all.
He has 3 years left on his deal. If he continues to progress this season when he gets in the final 18 months he should get a new dealits offering these kids the fucking world at 18/19 that sees half of them dissappear.
Lets be very clear on something here. Raheem is 19 and his current salary is 1.5m per year. A contract he signed less than 18 months ago.
Now if he had broken his ACL or turned out to be utter shit he will still earn 1.5m a year until 2017.
Luckily hes turned out to be good and our gamble has paid off. But it WAS a massive gamble, so why the fuck should we less than half the way through that gamble double it?
This is nothing against Raheem of course but he is 19 years old and a millionaire.
The deal was you go see the manager when you have a year left and you say I want a new deal. This new trend of just doubling contracts for the sake of it with 3 years to run is fucked up. Its no wonder the fans are detached from the game so much.
If we want to see performance improvement then rewrite the contract, offer him 30k per week plus some target related bonuses. Or add options to extend at a higher value based on some metric measures.
Bottom line kid signed a 5 year deal and has 3 years to go of that deal. I dont understand why clubs bend over to 'protect an asset'
What IF Madrid come calling?
NOT FOR SALE.
Perhaps we should offer him 50k, with a view to a renogotiation to 70k if we finish top 4 and he hits 15 goals in all competitions. That way we ensure continued effort.
I've got no problem with the club giving him a new deal to reflect his worth, but I still think £120k a week is excessive. He simply hasn't performed at that level yet IMO. He doesn't deserve to be on any more than Sturridge, and even that's pushing it.
I'd say £80k a week is about right for him for now. Then review things in 18 months.
Exactly when the contracts were signed is a major consideration. Assaidi came from the NL right ? I'd imagine that even 21k was a sizeable increase with performance bonuses on top to come for someone not destined to be a starter.
The sooner we start accepting that this is a multi-billion pound business where the very top performers earn insane amounts of money the better.
Top actors earn millions, top pop stars earn millions, top sports stars earn millions. And this obsession with 'a week' when taking about wages is just banal. Who today actually works out their wage on how much they get paid a week? Apparently only waiters and footballers.
BR: I didn’t say Raheem Sterling was like Lionel Messi, I was a bit shocked to read I’d “said” that. He’s a great young talent though.
BR: Sterling is just one of a number of young players here with so much potential, we’re looking forward to seeing their developments.
BR: I’ve not heard anything about Sterling being offered a new contract.

Brendan Rodgers, yesterday, ruled out a new improved contract for Raheem Sterling, saying that he was not a top player, and was just one of a number of young prospects at the club.
