Sterling

He's the closest to a Suarez replacement as we're going to get. This is a huge season for him. The one after following a breakthrough season is always more tough as coaches and defences better understand how to negate the players effectiveness.

We really need to tailor to Sterling's strength's this season. He's worth building a team around.

11 for me . suits him better . plus it means assaidi is off . wait, where is assaidi ? he's not on tour is he ?

I like Sterling and everything, but I'd rather we gave a new sexy attacker that number to make it a bit interesting.

I wasn't sure what this thread was going to be about, but I'd just like to reiterate, he's fucking boss.

He's probably better than any sexy attacker we're likely to sign.

This is true, but it doesn't really feel like we've plugged the hole Suarez has left. We're short up top, so a striker will go some way to addressing that.

Will he do a Joey Barton and offer to buy replacement shirts with his new number for all who have already got one with his old number?

Is that playing him behind one striker like Italy first half

I don't think it matter much where we play him so long as he has the allowance to make runs in behind and feed off Coutinho and Sturridges flicks and tricks.

What matters more than his starting position is that he is given the ball quickly from defence when there are spaces higher up the pitch. That's when he'll be as his best.

If we can't find another striker that matches our required profile, then again, I'm going to champion Sterling as a stand-in striker when Sturridge isn't available . Yes, he's great in using his pace, carrying the ball and making runs from deep, but he's also learned to make very intelligent cuts and darts behind the defence to receive the ball in a scoring position.

Look at the goals he scored last season in this clip and you'll see him making some proper strikers' runs to get into space and finish:

His finishing last season was superb too - I was surprised myself when I checked and saw that he scored 9 goals after taking 45 shots (20%) - that's actually extremely close to Sturridge's 21 in 99 (21.2%). And as you can see in the clip, the goals weren't simply tap-ins.

Moving him inwards and forward this season won't hurt us as badly out wide this season because of the much-improved options we have in the squad. I've absolute confidence that the kid can again be pushed out of his comfort zone and deliver again.

Imagine if we'd bought him for £20 million. We'd be like kids on Xmas morning. He is tough, strong, quick, smart, a pretty good football brain and great technique. He'll scare the shit out of defenders this season.

Having showered Coutinho with praise, now Rodgers cums all over Sterling:

Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling is heading for ‘new level’ – Brendan Rodgers

The Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has backed winger Raheem Sterling to show his game has progressed “to a new level” this season with the maturing 19-year-old accepting greater responsibility.

The England international has been in fine form throughout pre-season and, alongside Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge, demonstrated Liverpool still possess a formidable attack without Luis Suárez in Sunday’s 4-0 friendly defeat of Borussia Dortmund. Sterling’s physical and tactical development were evident against Jürgen Klopp’s side when he knocked imposing Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Kehl to the floor with a shoulder charge and reminded the new signing Emre Can of his defensive duties.

Rodgers believes the teenager, who has already played 77 competitive games for Liverpool, will have a greater influence at Anfield, providing he remains focused on his profession. The Liverpool manager said: “Something we said to Raheem when he first broke into the team, and something we’ve reiterated, is that you have to have an identity as a player.

“The identity he has is to score goals and create goals. That’s what the job is. He scored 10 goals last year and this kid is only going to get better. When you’re so young, it’s important to understand exactly what your role is. Not just look good, you have to be efficient and effective. His development has gone to a new level. He’s way above the level from when he first came in.

“Tactically, technically, and what has been beautiful to watch with Raheem has been his maturity. He’s turning into a beautiful young man, with all the responsibility. He’s taking it all in his stride and now he’s in a good place with every part of his game. It’s just about maintaining that commitment to his work. He’s still only 19, but in big games he’s performed and he’s a wonderful talent.”

Sterling delivered arguably England’s only encouraging individual performance and Rodgers claimed there is now trepidation in Liverpool’s rivals when facing the 19-year-old at the World Cup in the 2-1 defeat against Italy. “The great thing with watching him now is that he gets you off your seat. When he gets the ball you think ’something could happen here’,” said the manager.

“There was a moment in the game against Manchester City [on Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States] when he got the ball on the left-hand side. He had Clichy coming to press him, he had Navas coming back to press him and a midfield player coming across to try to block the space on the inside. So for teams to have that fear of a young player shows his development. There is still work for him to do, but he knows that and is a really good boy who is developing really well.”

Liverpool’s chief executive, Ian Ayre, travelled to Cardiff before the Super Cup final between Sevilla and Real Madrid for further talks with the Andalucian club over Moreno. Sevilla have resisted Liverpool’s attempts to sign the left-back for a fee of around £16m all summer. Samuel Eto’o is another player interesting Liverpool but there has been no approach for the veteran Cameroon striker as yet.

He's going to be star this season. However, I can Rodgers being sensible with him and giving him a break here and there.

That's what's so lovely about our summer transfer if all goes well to plan. Markovic and Lallana should be able to offer him that, and if Ibe / Suso are kept around, can give him some rest as well. They all offer something a little different (and probably a bit less) but it sure as hell is better than watching Moses.
