Jay Spearing has thanked Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard for helping him resurrect his Liverpool career.
Spearing was in the doldrums under Roy Hodgson, who only used the midfielder as part of his shadow side in the Europa League and Carling Cup.
The Scouser got his big chance under Dalglish and says the Liverpool boss has given him the confidence to produce his best form yet for the Reds.
“The new manager has given me a lot of confidence,†he said. “He started me in the derby at Anfield in one of his first games and he has shown he has a lot of belief in me.
“He knows the type of player I am, and what I can do.
“Any player that has the confidence of the manager gets a massive confidence boost. It has just made me want more and with the manager’s belief, I can go on and do better things.
“I have been in and around the first team for a few years now, but been in and out. I’m regularly involved now.â€
Spearing, 22, stood out in Liverpool’s victory at Sunderland, winning the controversial penalty for their opening goal, and was chuffed to receive a well-done message from Gerrard.
“Stevie texted me after the game, to say I’d done well,†he said. “He always speaks to me and gives me encouragement and advice, so to receive something like that from someone who has done so much for this club is a massive boost.
“That proved I can play at that level and as I said the manager has given me a lot of confidence. I’ve got to pay that back now nd keep it going.â€
