Spearing: what defensive rock and monster, bossed things defensively and won the peno.

Skrtel and Agger: won absolutely everything going - very steady and held well against a decent Gyan-wellbeck partnership

Suarez: what a monster on and off the ball, it's nice to see someone with genuine technical ability has the amount of fight and will he has off the ball. Hope he's not out for long!

Really impressed with spearing. He can start every week if he puts in those kind of performances

Reina - clean sheet (another).
[/quote]

He didn't have to make a single save. So i wouldn't really include him, it's more indicative of just how ace the lads in front of him were ( see Original post)

In fact he fluffed one of the few crosses/threats he had to deal with, i'll put that down to boredom though.

Another clean sheet is ace eitherway.

Impressive performance from the wee man.

Suarez, deal of the season.
Hopefully will get some more players of his calibre in the summer. Hate to see him take on the Owen, Gerrard, Torres burden.

The sweetner about Suarez is that Chelsea would be financially far better off as well on the pitch if they'd gone for him rather than Torres.

He's fantastic.

And rightly so. The most unpredictable and dangerous man on the pitch.

I love the factbthat he's never static. Constantly switching flanks, looking for gaps to run into, and demanding the ball. Intangibles that you can't teach and that are found only in the top top players. I'm well made up. Also, I can't wait for him to curl one in from a free kick.

Ah well!

General opinion on Spearing over the last year has been - 'not good enough for Liverpool'. Not a bad player, but we need better. Does today's performance suggest that maybe he could play a role? It certainly suggests that Poulsen was a horrendous piece of business.
Spearing as backup to M'Vila next year?

It's gotta be worth a shot.

He needs to do it more often. Plessis played well against arsenal remember.

Yes - that performance was on my mind too.

He played earlier on in the season and since Mascherano leaving I've championed him to play, not because I think he's a world beater but because I think he's without doubt the best DM we have. Often this season we've been completely over run in CM, I'm not having a go at Lucas, bit Lucas isn't firmly enough of either a DM or a playmaker. Spearing makes it uncomfortable for the opposition, we need that. He's of course limited as an all round footballer, he can't play a Hollywood ball or doesn't have an extensive passing range, but he works hard, covers lots of ground, presses the opposition and wins tackles. You need that in the middle of the park.

I'm pleased to hear this - I've already backed him as potentially sorting out our defensive deficit in midfield.

I'm not trying to downplay what he did today, just let's not go over the top just yet.

More of the same would be lovely.

He's shown the capacity for it though - I missed the game and I know it anyway.

It would be great to see him make himself undroppable.

The thing is he's always impressed at what he does the few times he's played this season. And what he does as a DM is better than what Lucas does as one. So there's a perfectly valid argument for him staking a claim to the first team. Whether he's good enough to play there in the long run is another question. But I certainly don't think it's scandalous in the slightest to say that he's a better DM than Lucas or Poulsen.

Is he really that limited as a footballer?

When he's been lambasted on here in the past a couple of posters who watch the reserves more regularly have commented on the way he's played for the reserves in the past and there he's never looked short of ability. He's led the team through blood, sweat and tears, but he's also scored plenty of goals and shown he can pick a pass. In short, the Gerrard of the reserves. Now he's obviously not got the same ability or potential as Gerrard, but I think it's a little unfair to suggest that the only value he might provide is to run around midfield nipping the oppositions ankles.

That's not my point (not sure if this is aimed at me) - my point is that he has shown ability in this area, in a way that Lucas hasn't.

And also, I wouldn't downplay the importance of that role Ken - you make it sound like it's a shit job for a shit footballer, but the truth is that a player that can do this well becomes central to the success of the team.
