I don't think he IS better than lucas.
Only time will tell. He has hardly played. Lucas has played a lot and has shown himself (so far) to be average at best.

Spearing might not be good enough but I reckon he's worth a try.

I can't access the YouTube clips that have been posted (am at work) but Stu is actually correct that in Gerrard's first few games (which is even more than Spearing has had) he didn't set the World alite either.

I doubt Spearing will end up being the new Gerrard but we've not lost much by giving him a chance.
lucas is given a ridiculously rough ride on here.
lucas has shown himself able to pick a pass and get himself into goal scoring positions.
how old is he? 22?

The problem with Lucas is that he loses almost every 50/50 he goes into. I think he is a decent player, and has had a rough ride on here, but I also think Spearing is a superior player.

losing 50/50 is neither here nor there to me if the player has ability because you can send someone down the gym you can't teach someone to trap a ball.

All you can really say about Spearing is he is "steady" or "tidy" when he plays.
That's not really true. He is always full of running for the reserves, gets stuck in, gets forward playing good passes and scores goals.

What makes you say his style is Lucas-esque?
I haven't seen him much for the reserves. Does he play a different role for them? Maybe he has a more restricted role in the first team or finds it harder to influence a game at that level but his first team performances have only been "steady or "tidy" in my opinion.
I watched him for pretty much an entire season in the reserves (the season where they won the reserve league), and he is much better than 'steady' or 'tidy'. He pretty much always dictates the play in the reserves, and I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that he was MOM for about half of the games he played. And that's key for me. He is consistently good, he doesn't have one stormer then one nightmare. Week in, week out, he plays to a high level, and has a bit of everything- good set-piece, good shot, excellent range of passing, and a wee terrier in the tackle. He reminds me of a likable Dennis Wise.
That's a good summary of him Doc. He's deserved his chance for some time now.

Something that should make him appeal to Rafa is the fact that he's very tactically aware. You can send him on in almost any position and he'd know what is expected of him. He's too small for the defence, but he's filled in there in the reserves and looked smarter and more disciplined than the regular defenders. In midfield he could come on as a sub and do exactly what Rafa wanted. That flexibility ought to win him more chances than he might otherwise have had.

If you don't realise that Spearing has at least the innate skill of Lucas, then you haven't really watched him play. Which I suspect you haven't.

Yes, you can, I've been on both ends of that process. What you can't do is give a player mental toughness to go with a bulked-up physique, the kind that gives them the edge in those 50-50s.

Since when does 'height' define how good you can be as a footballer?
Give me the names of some central midfielders under the height of 5 foot 6 who've performed well in the Premier League.

There's one in your original picture, mate.
Well Lee was hardly the central midfielder Spearing's aspiring to be was he?

Seriously though, central midfielders under 5"6 that have performed well in the Premier League?

Jody Morris?

Claude Makalele was only 5,7. 5,5 is a little shorter than you'd like, but lets not write him off because of it, he looks promising.

He does indeed. Plus he's more than capable of beating a man twice his size in the tackle.

A small frame can be a strength as well as a weakness.

I'm not sure if he's good enough (not seen too much of him yet), but the height argument is irrelevant no? Mascher is not exactly tall for a CM but that hardly seems to hinder his game.

I like what I've seen of little Jay Spearing, he doesn't let himself get bullied, gives as good as he gets, seems pretty aware and ready to get stuck in.

I don't really give a fuck how tall he is, as long as he can do most things right

I like a lot. Size is not important, so long as he can pass the ball and snap a fierce tackle in. If we already had 7 dwarves in the squad, then it might be a problem, but we are a fairly big and strong size.
I hope to see a lot more of him this season.

i like him and it is not a question of size but a question of ability and I don't think spearing has got what it takes to make it at lfc - i hope he proves me wrong, but the best we can hope for is a 6 figure sum to a champtionship club with a sell-on clause.

He is only ever going to be 3rd or 4th choice, squeezing in sub appearances now and again. He is good enough to perform that role in the squad.

Sammy Lee was better than decent.
Indeed he was, but looking at that photograph, I'd swear he's getting shorter.

Apropos Spearing, I'm not against the lad but he doesn't look top PL quality to me and I'm not being 'heightist' there.
