"I'd give him a go. He deserves a run in the side. He's better than Lucas. Next Gerrard"

Yer ma. The cunt couldn't even get on the big rides at Alton Towers, never mind play in the Premier League.

I don't think anyone has called him the next Gerrard, but he is good enough to deserve a chance, and he is better than Lucas.

Maybe it will stop us punting the ball from defence. Another bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Every time he's had a game for the first team I've always thought he gave a very good account of himself. He should be given an extended run in the team for cup games to see what he can really bring to the table.

Since when does 'height' define how good you can be as a footballer?
Since Peter Crouch won the ballon d'or.

not being funny or anything.. but Sammy Lee as a player was smaller than him.... and he was a decent midfielder..

'he established a reputation as a sharp-passing and strong-running midfield player who could also hit a decent shot'

sounds a bit like Spearing attributes..

we could be looking at the next Sammy Lee here... rather than the next Stevie G

I'd be happy with that... Personally I think he will make it...

Ryan your a cock.... try looking at the 'bigger' picture...

What a strange thread topic. I think Spearing has look ok/good when he has played.
He certainly has done enough to be given his chance and if he doesn't make well then c'est la vie.
He CANNOT be any worse than Lucas.

There was a moment during the friendly the other night where he was side by side with one of their players in a tussle for the ball, and he out-muscled a much bigger guy, and then, head up, played a lovely pass. It was hard not to compare with Lucas, who invariably would have lost the ball.

He managed to play CB for the ressies without being noticeably hampered by his height, or lack of it. The lad is most definitely worth a go.

All you can really say about Spearing is he is "steady" or "tidy" when he plays.
That's not really true. He is always full of running for the reserves, gets stuck in, gets forward playing good passes and scores goals.

What makes you say his style is Lucas-esque?

I reckon he is worth a go.

Height and build can be an issue but that's normally at a younger age. He has got far enough already to show that he has been able to compensate in other areas.

Some of the best players have been his height or even smaller. I'm not saying he will be a World beater but he shouldn't be ruled out just because of his height.

Yeah, I agree to an extent, but he will be going out on the pitch doing his best to be 'steady' and 'tidy'.
He will not go out and try a hollywood ball and a few flicks or dummies like Robbie Keane, as a CM he must never give the ball away, ever. If that means he gets it and gives it quickly as to maintain possession then he will do it every single time, if that makes him steady then so be it. He wants the manager to know that he is reliable and can be trusted to keep the ball, even under great pressure.

Only with time and exposure to the first team, particularly in the Premier League, will he be able to grow and develop into a class player. Gerrard was doing all the simple things as a young CM.

But the only occassions he has played have been in CC or for a few minutes here and there. He is hardly experienced enough yet to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and destroy teams. Simple things well, and then develop and build as he gets more and more game time with the first XI. That will be more than Lucas has done.

I haven't seen him much for the reserves. Does he play a different role for them? Maybe he has a more restricted role in the first team or finds it harder to influence a game at that level but his first team performances have only been "steady or "tidy" in my opinion.

When did you start watching Football?

He was always trying to do too much as a kid.

I watched him for pretty much an entire season in the reserves (the season where they won the reserve league), and he is much better than 'steady' or 'tidy'. He pretty much always dictates the play in the reserves, and I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that he was MOM for about half of the games he played. And that's key for me. He is consistently good, he doesn't have one stormer then one nightmare. Week in, week out, he plays to a high level, and has a bit of everything- good set-piece, good shot, excellent range of passing, and a wee terrier in the tackle. He reminds me of a likable Dennis Wise.

Come on you got to recognise he is a better option than the Headless Lucas. Sat along side experience to help him develop we have probable future midfielder of some substance albeit a little diminutive in stature!!!

He's played all of 30mins or so for the first team? What else is he supposed to do but come on and try and not fuck up?

I had a feeling my comparison with Gerrard would bring this type of response.
Ok, I'm not saying Spearing is as good as Gerrard at the same age , or will develop into a player as good as Gerrard. I'm not saying that.

Obviously Gerrard had talent, no question. But a couple of good goals from his youth doesn't change the fact that he did keep things simple overall. He played a lot of first touch passes, keeping the ball moving and trying not to fuck up. He had been in the first team for 20+ league games when he scored that Sheffield Wednesday goal so it wasn't like he did in his debut.

I don't think he IS better than lucas.
Only time will tell. He has hardly played. Lucas has played a lot and has shown himself (so far) to be average at best.

Spearing might not be good enough but I reckon he's worth a try.

I can't access the YouTube clips that have been posted (am at work) but Stu is actually correct that in Gerrard's first few games (which is even more than Spearing has had) he didn't set the World alite either.

I doubt Spearing will end up being the new Gerrard but we've not lost much by giving him a chance.
