Southampton v Liverpool - Match Thread

I'm not normally a blame the ref type of person, but he made some very bad decisions.

In saying that, TAA was utter tripe and should have been hooked earlier. Salah may as well have been at home. Mane was our best striker, but his decision making was awful.

A lot of problems stemmed from Henderson at centre back. Not his fault, and we'll never know if Williams or Phillips could have done better, but we played a little bit conservatively to protect him.

Robertson was Liverpools MOTM.
MOTM for us was

1.Thiago
2. Fabinho
3. Hendo

And even they were no higher than a 4 or 5.

We lack striker options when team sit back. It allows for more variety.
Like against Newcastle and WBA.
We could also do with some more shots from distance, even if we were shit with the last ball tonight.

Mane was our best player, by a mile.

Let's also not underestimate how many goals we scored from set pieces last year, which won/turned around games.

Virgil is one of the biggest set piece threats in the league, who opened up space for others. Matip also is a nuisance, We don't carry that threat right now. Teams can defend 10 behind the ball and give us 100 set pieces and we don't look like scoring.

It's no wonder why we are taking short corners in the 95th minute.

Mane has bothered me for a while. He's usually an unofficial captain up front, he takes everything personally and he's constantly pushing the other attacking players to up their game. Not recently. His shot was awful - you've got a big keeper in front of you who goes down in instalments, so Mane tries to curl it over his head. Why? He spent big chunks of the game strolling around as if he wasn't much bothered, then he'd do silly dives or nothing passes. He's just not mentally right.

Robbo huffed and puffed but why doesn't he shoot sometimes? It's the only thing they don't expect. And at least that would be better than high crosses at Giant McGiant in the goal.

Trent - god knows what the hell is up with him. He needs to be dropped and he needs a serious discusssion with Klopp.

Salah disappeared, not that he was getting any decent balls played to him. At least Bobby showed a bit of invention in the second half, but a terrible touch.

In his previous games everyone looked to give Thiago the ball. They stopped doing that in this game, which spoke volumes about his performance but that was also a worrying sign.

Only Gini and Fab seemed their usual selves. It was a woeful performance and yes, now there's real concern.

Mane wasn't shite at all, he was the only one running and pressing throughout the game, he also got nothing from the ref. His end product was lacking but most of what he produced in-front of goal he did via his own graft. Salah and Firmino were anonymous. What game were you watching?
The one where Mane did absolutely nothing, unless running and pressing are the criteria. Not a cross, a shot or in fact anything of note with all the possession he had. I guess that's why the commentators were giving Kyle-Walker such kudos. As for getting nothing from the ref. I'm not surprised because he went down far too easily half the time, if he had stayed on his feet he might have contributed more.

EDIT. Read Macca's post right above this one. Seems I'm not the only one who saw it that way.

Weirdly that was a worse performance than the Villa game where Villa played the gane of their lives and it seemed like everything they hit went in. Southampton were ordinary, well organised and that was pretty much it, not one of our players had a decent game from back to front, we could have played another 90 mins and not scored.

It seems like playing the same system for 4 years has evetually been nullified. That was like watching Rodgers era Liverpool, and the bad seasons, endless posession recycling with no attempt to score or take any risks.

Klopp needs to have a long think about his tactics before the Utd game. Seemingly every manager in the league is ready for us.

On the taking risks aspect ... we simply weren't getting enough people into the box. Often it was only 2 or 3 vs 6 when the final ball went in.

And, not that it matters a bit now, but that was one of the most shamelessly biased refereeing performances in ages. He seemed to realise it in the last twenty minutes, because he was suddenly trying to edit himself - he let two of their players hack Milner down, then seemed to give Milner two free fouls to belatedly make up for it. He had the whistle in his mouth before players had even come close to each other in the first half, he was so over-eager to spot fouls. Utterly shambolic.

The media and opposition managers have worked their magic so well even our own fans think Mane is diving half the time ... and we wonder why he gets no calls, even when we see blatant penalties like last week.

Good bye #20 ...
Well he does go down very easily and that's got nothing to do with the media. That doesn't mean he shouldn't win more penalties/free-kicks but when you go down like that all the time then referees are reluctant to make that call.

He's done an incredible, almost out of this world, job the last few years ...
But I'm worried his overconfidence in his players, and stubbornness (small squad, formation etc), is going to be really problematic.
Loved to be proved wrong, but this season could spin out of control quickly.

and has been fantastic since he come in..has a few indifferent games after injury and you have a pop at the lad..

enuff for yer..
Oh what bollocks. Is that why half this forum were saying .. it always takes him a few games to get back up to speed? You asked why he was taken off - for giving the ball away a PL record 38 times in just 65 mins, not even a full match ! That's 38 times we had to recover it.

if you say so mate - if he was playing for man u, he wins a penalty last week ... why? well, remember when mourinho called out their penalty luck (which you did recently too I'm sure)? Ole stood up for his team ... Remind me when klopp stood up for the non-stop shit mane faced last year when he was getting FOULED in the box and winning penalties? This year he's been getting fouled non-stop in many games .. few fouls are given ... he goes down like most players do nowadays - so either he's a cheat or he's been tarred by bullshit like what you posted.

Yup, he has.
But he's been average this season compared to the standards he's set himself ... and we have to be worried because our way of play cannot work without him ... and I don't think Klopp the tactics, so if we don't get that TAA you refer too, we're in shit.

He was so inept it's unbelievable...In the first half he gave us a corner when it clearly went out for a throw..he then conspired with the linesman to say that the resulting corner curled out of play when it clearly didn't... The level of refereeing is diabolical to put it mildly, it almost makes you wish for the likes of Jeff "tango man" Winter to come out of retirement

Suggest you open your eyes and watch a few replays.

And Tyler led the bias in the coverage. Even after the game. Klopp gets his players to go to the Kop after a draw in his frst season? Universally mocked. Hasenhüttl collapses sobbing with emotion like he's just won the world cup, and it's all 'aaaahhh, init great?' Ridiculous. That camp nonsense really was the shit on the cake.

We were poor - don't give a fuck about that second half performance. But people need to realize these slow build ups are fucking shit, there were opportunities in that game to try and play a killer pass, but the truth is - most of our players are shit passers. Today we probably lost the title, and there is no way in hell we will beat United, our front three other than Mane were shit, Salah is not taking up those positions where he will expect the 2nd ball, we are just playing shit, and don't fucking fool yourselves in thinking we played well because we dominated them in the 2nd half. We had what one/two shots on target all game ? - save the excuses for a better day when the teams deserve one.

  • I have to say watching Milner come on and play - he really looked like an old man.
  • TAA looks tired and exhausted
  • Both Bobby and Salah look tired
  • Thiago was fucking shit
  • Shaq looked out of sorts which was kind of expected.
The only good thing about our team right now is our goal-keeper. Other than that we got serious problems. Forget this season - not worth it, let the players get qualification for CL and let them have a rest - they have been fighting at the highest level for 3 seasons in a row - I kind of expected it and that 7-2 thrashing at Villa was an early indication. Those players don't even look right in the head and their body language is all wrong.

Wait for Henderson to block a Martial shot like this in our encounter ... VAR? penalty!
