Souness fears for Liverpool downward spiral

"I fear they are in meltdown. If they don't reach the Champions League next year the best players won't want to play for Liverpool,'' he said. "That would be the first time in as long as I can remember. They are hundreds of millions of pounds in debt and they need a new stadium to keep up with the rest and just stand still.

I thought we did not qualify for Europe when he was our manager, no?

If yes, he is indeed a twat, if no, my apologies.

Maybe he needs to get down to the black and white microfiche section of the library and look way back to six years ago.

I thought he was until he did the world cup on Irish television a few years back.

I have alot of respect for him after that.

It's hard to blame him for this opinion as many fear this even if they don't say it out loud.

Really a case of pot calling the kettle black?
[/quote]

I think he'll be the first to admit he f*cked up at Liverpool.

I don't think so, I have the same fears as Souness.

The situation is not the same as when he was manager as regards the craving of players to play in the CL, or European Cup as it was then, the money coming out of The European cup and TV rights was not anywhere near the same level as it is now. Liverpool as a club , carried a lot more clout in those days, everyone thought we were just about to bounce back.

I don't like this demonisation of someone who has been a great servant of the club, and still has strong feelings towards it

regards

He sat in a studio alongside Jurgen Klinsmann (yes, nice touch, that) and Richard Keys and behaved in the most naive way as the anti-Liverpool agenda cranked into action yet again. His hypocrisy when it comes to discussing bad dealings in the transfer market and being over-indulged by the board was stunning. The contrast to Dalglish's past behaviour on the same show was painfully evident.

I wonder if Souness is ill. His voice is now strangely weak, and he sounds short of breath. Maybe it's affecting his mood and judgement. But Keys clearly adores him because he's precisely what that wretched little creep craves: an ex-Red willing to say all of the right critical things.

Agreed. So he is a twat! QED.

Vlads, it is not the fear expressed by Souness, as we all have the same fear but it is the way he says it, as if he himself had never ever done anything wrong, especially our history in Europe!

Souness was well on his way to a defeatist attitude when he took over as manager. He gave speeches to the sports hacks predicting that no team would be able to dominate the league as Liverpool had done before, he expressed doubts that Liverpool would be able to overcome the likes of George Graham's Arsenal, he failed to attract the best talents available, he bought some disgracefully inept players, he explained buying Julian Dicks as the result of a need to get 'a man,' he presided over the most shamefully shambolic performances I've ever seen - all whilst his mates in the media kept assuring people 'Souey will turn things around'. So, if someone who is now so jaundiced about the team wants to excuse the sewage stream that gushes from this S*n-loving mercenary's mouth because it happens to suit their own agenda, well, that's sad, but it's manipulative all the same.

Souness has admitted his failings many times in public.
One of his main failings , as he saw it, was that he unreasonably expected the players to have as much passion about the club as he did. He admits that was wrong....I am not so sure

I think it's mainly aimed at me and I can't be arsed with him.

Oops, am I being "jaundiced" ?

It's not aimed at you at all. I just don't think so. It's impressive contortionism to bend over to see Souness in a good light while doing the opposite as far as Benitez is concerned. Sure, Souness was right to expect players to have pride in playing for the club, but I doubt Beardsley lacked it, or Barnes, but he bombed the former out the club and alienated the latter so much he seemed eager to leave. Morale declined rapidly during his wretched reign, and he left the club in a pathetic mess. Still 'two or three players' away from a 'good' team. And his teacup-tossing bull in a china shop style of management was risibly outdated even then. How this shocking hypocrite can keep churning this crap out on Sky - and then add that he's 'a supporter' - is a mystery.

Eggzackerly!!!

He needs to come off his high horse and realise that particular wooden horse only have 3 legs.

It wouldn't be so bad if he sought to be constructive as well as critical, but, for someone as media savvy as he is, it's just disingenuous to go on to that programme, be fed leading questions by that man, and make such comments. He knows damn well how they'll be used and for someone who has been through the same high pressure job, and reacted angrily at such attacks in the past, to do what he does is contemptible.

for all his vanity Souness is a Liverpool through and fucking through, we have lost fucking game after game after fucking game this season are playing like shit and are basically in freefall, whether Sky stoke the flames or not and fuck around with Klinnsman in the studio with their silly fucking comments and editorial slant its just fucking fact. We are also, hundreds of millions in debt, a debt which in part helped cause the freefall in the first place. I do not believe for a second that Souness is happy about it but he has every fucking right as a pundit to say what is going on. Yes you can say positive things also but the team from top to bottom dont deserve any verbal accolades right now, they need fucking telling whats what.

As a matter of interest how many hundreds is it? Making statements like "hundreds of millions" in a throwaway manner can be very misleading. Is it two, three, four of more?. Has it gone up or down? Have the interest payments gone up or down?

I think Souness is perfectly entitled to discuss and criticise the players and the manager, but how much exactly does he know about the financial situation at the club?

I dont think its the main reason why Souey's got these fears...
But yeah Im with Vlad on this.

Souness making a bid for the Sybil Fawlty Bleeding Obvious award? Well, okay, if this is his 'right', fine, but it's a step too far to present this as some kind of brave and principled punditry. Souness exaggerating the bleeding obvious for effect? No, I don't think that's worthy of anyone's respect, even if it does suit their mood of self-inflicted masochism. And his history of public snipes against his old club, from his Southampton days through his bickering with Houllier and on to today hardly demonstrates he's 'Liverpool through and through'. This 'enemy of my enemy is my friend' stuff is all too typical of the humbug on here these days.

I didnt hear his comments, i dont undertsand the masochism reference either nor do i much give a fuck whatever the fuck, regardless if King Kenny himself came out and said he was a bluenose and has been all along it would make no difference. What's really important now is not what ex players/ disgruntled ex managers or the Sky is falling pundits say what matters is that we are playing like shit have been for ages and we are heavily in debt.

Do i think Sounness is a twat?

No.

Do i think the questions important right now?

No.
