Felt like discussing something other than the demise of LFC and the transfers.
--------------------------

Is it just me or are they more often than not shite.
OK maybe not shite but average and not even close to what their fathers were.

Jordi Cruyff
Paul Dalglish
Neale McDermott
Stephen Clemence
Bradley Wright Phillips
Casper Schmeichel
Tobias Hysén
Diego Sinagra

The only exception to the rule is Paulo Maldini I guess.

Is there anyone else?

You have to wonder how many Pepe himself will end up with, given that he's a contemporary of Casillas. Not that I'd swap.

Works the other way too. Most top footballers had a dad who was nowhere near as good.
My father was shite and why am I not a star.
Best I did was playing Sweden's division 3. But I had potential, was 18 years old playing with guys bigger and older than me. Then drugs, women and rock and roll came along and now I'm 28 in a one bedroom apartment staring at the face of failure.

Frank Lampard Senior was a fullback, a fairly agricultural one by top division standards, nowhere near as classy a player as his son.

Their is alot of evidence that suggests success in an field has nothing to do with natural ability or genetics and all to do with long motivated hours of practice.

Obviously sports such as sprinting and basketball aside where certain physical attributes are a most.

"Nothing to do with natural ability or genetics" is overdoing it. Practice is crucial (10,000 hours is widely said to be the amount required) but, if you don't have some talent to start with, no amount of practice will create it. You can't perfect what you don't have.

Football is the hardest sport in the world to get to the very top. Theres just a ridiculous amount of competition for every single place. Even if you have the perfect genes it still takes an enormous amount of hard work, right decisions and most of all luck.

I dunno if that is true in the US -

Another exception, Xabi and his father.
Periko won the Spanish league 3 times and has 20 caps.

In the world I said. Getting to the top in US isn't getting to to the very top in the world.

True. For instance there are numerous hockey families with famous fathers and sons.

But you can't really compare a mickey mouse sport like hockey to football. The smaller the sport the more of these family dynasties there probably are.

I quite like Kasper Schmeichel.. Only 24 and when he left City he was linked with a few prem clubs.. He'll make it in the top league, be it with Leeds or someone else like Fulham or Blackburn..

I wouldn't call hockey a mickey mouse sport, well compared to football it is. But it's like the third largest sport in the world isn't it.

1. Football
2. Basketball
3. Hockey?

Not sure why Reina senior isn't regarded as being 'elite'. He played for one of the great footballing nations and played in a European cup final.

3rd largest in the world??? There are like 6 or 7 countries where it's really popular! Just because it's a big money sport in US and Canada doesn't make it a big sport worldwide.

Malcolm Gladwell !

I would agree with you though, I think a lot of players won't ever make it (or be as good as they could be) because they don't put in the hard work.

Is it possible that sons of famous players get more advantages because of their name and don't feel like they need to do the work others do ?

I'm not sure either but from my point of view, remember I'm a Swede, hockey is one of the biggest sports in the world.

1. Football
2. Cricket
3. Basketball
4. Baseball
5. Rugby Union
6. Field Hockey
7. Volleyball
8. Ice Hockey
9. American Football
10. Rugby League

Apparantly youngest maldini looks the business.
Yes saw the tackle he did on Seedorf.

I was going to add Darren Ferguson but by all accounts his dad was fucking hopeless as a player too.

Do we still have David Martin? His dad was a good player. He's not really.
