So, Roy Hodgson's Footballing Style

So how do we expect him to get Liverpool playing?

Are we to be slick and stylish bringing back the best of traditions of the pass and move era or workmanlike first and foremost then squeezing the play into the oppositions half and look to take advantage of mistakes?

His recent record points to a good home record with games won at high tempo coupled with a conservative approach away from home with a meagre amount of goals scored. Will inheriting better players mean a more adventurous approach?

I know it's probably not much to go by but he certainly made FC Copenhagen play more attractive football at the time than what they've been used too in the past Seasons.

After ending 7th and 8th in 1999 and 2000 he took them to the title and they've pretty much never looked back since.

Applying a rather attacking-minded 4-4-2 formation as I recall it.

If I asked 'What sort of style will you bring to Liverpool Football Club?', what would you say?

The club has style, it has always had style. You can see the club has always played in the right way. A passing game, a way in which players work very hard for each other, a way that means when players lose the ball they get back and help the team as soon as possible. That ties in very nicely with my philosophy of how the game should be played. There will be absolutely no conflict of interest where that is concerned. I want Liverpool to play as Liverpool have always played and we'll work hard on the training field to get that.

Well aside from a 6 month spurt the season before last, we've grown used to pretty boring tactics over the last 10 years.

I will be very pleased if we get to watch a more expressive team.

I've also mentioned several times that Roy's away form was utterly shocking at Fulham - something I find a bit worrying.

That, or guess wildly in a footie-forum.

Wild guessing's not unusual in a footie-forum though. Sometimes it beats talking about the politics surrounding the club. I'd go:

---------------------Reina----------------------

Johnson---Carragher---Skrtel---Agger

------------------Mascherano----------------

Maxi--Gerrard---Aquilani----Jovanovic

--------------------Torres-----------------------

He has the players for pass and move and I think he'll line up like so, at least in home games; and look to release Gerrard forward to partner Torres with crosses coming in from the wide areas Maxi and Jovanovic.

He inherits much better players than Fulham had and by extension should be more adventurous.

It'll depend on who he brings in. Id say more of the same but hopefully we'll have someone more talented than Lucas to get us playing a bit.

Why would you put our brand new striker on the wing?
[/quote]

Because he's a left-footer and has played in that position for club and country.

..and I'm quite sure that's role he's been brought in to play as well.

He's got pace to burn and can take a man on, would make sense.

Whether it'll be a success is a completely different matter mind.

I reckon he should be burned at the stake if he doesn't do the double this year.

The FA Cup and the title?

You are right though.

Yes. The Double.

Concert Square should be the venue should he fail.

I actually thought you meant to say double-figures but hey I like The Double more.. .

I'm looking forward to seeing what Roy thinks of some of the starlets and if he can help them progress.

On another subject, I wonder if Riera will be brought back in from the cold.

Who exactly do you suggest as an alternative?

This season will be a very important one for the young players, I think. It's a new opportunity for them and when we do have holes in the lineup I hope they get a chance to show what they've got.

As for Riera I'm not really arsed either way but he may get another chance and I don't think we'll get much for him if we sell so it might not be the worst idea to give him a shot. If he mucks it up, January isn't that far away.

I wouldn't be surprised if he went for a traditional 442, players know where they are in that formation, and it's safe.
I hope he does play at a high pace at home and go to kill teams off and be a little more cautious against mid-table and above teams away

regards

So long as he pays more attention to what we can do with the ball and our strengths, rather than obsessing about the opponents and their strengths. A positive approach from the outset will send out the right signals, even if the results against the big boys in our first 5 games do not go to plan.

What I would give to see a return to pass and move football!

Come on Roy, show some adventure and let us hit the ground running!

Providing they stay, I expect he'll build the team round Torres and Gerrard rather than trying to fit them into a system

I enjoyed watching Fulham at home..

They would keep the ball on the ground and pass hard and low through the middle.

It helped when they had Murphy and Bullard in the Centre to receive and distribute the ball...

Looks like he's going to play 442, and with some pass and move, which if it comes true will be the best thing to happen for fucking years as far as I'm concerned.

---------Torres Kuyt
Riera Gerrard-----?------?
? Agger Carragher Johnson
--------------Reina

Maxi would be an appropriate choice for right midfield in this formation. The big question is who would partner the Captain if the Argentine leaves?

The fact that we're being linked to at least 4 wingers gives me hope. Roy understands the history and traditions of the club. I'm pretty excited to see how we line up against the Gooners!

Haven't we played around Torres and Gerrard? The problem has happened when we've bought the wrong players and tried to incorporate them into the roles our two best players successfully occupy (Keane and Aquilani anyone?)

I read an article somewhere in the last couple of days from someone who played for him and he said that's exactly what Roy was like, always focussing on what his team can do and not talking too much about the strengths of the opposition.
