So on to Bordeaux..

I don't think so. Maybe he (or all of them as a group) tried a strategy as a reaction to the end of last season, looked at it and decided it wasn't the right way to go. I hope that's it. For better or worse, Brendan was hired to get the team playing in a certain way, and that's what he needs to keep doing, but, hopefully, better and better. It's a waste of his time and ours if he tries to morph into an ersatz Howard Wilkinson. He might get through this or get sacked, but do it his way, with courage and conviction, That's what I hope.

Possibly :

--------------------- Mignolet -----------------

Randall --- Toure ----- Sakho ---- Moreno

------------- Rossiter ----- Allen -------------

------------------- Coutinho ---------------

Ibe ---------------- Origi ----------- Lallana

You could also reverse Ibe and Lallana. Maybe Can or Gomez for Randall.
It's a skilful and creative frontline but there isn't much power there, and none have a proven goal scoring record. Hence why I'd prefer Ings to start.

Origi and Ings would/could be useful on the break though. Haven't Bordeaux got a great record at home?

Don't know but this quote is from another site. It sounds like Rodgers has taken this match far too lightly.

Bordeaux had a great result against PSG on Friday with a rather 'negative' approach, you could say, where they mainly nullified PSG's threat from midfield. It was a really good tactical performance, with Khazri and Crivelli (the two strikers) positioning themselves tu cut off supply to the middle, and PSG forced out wide most of the time. Their midfield players are quite physical (not especially big and strong, but very good stamina) and had a great game. I'd say their CBs are maybe a bit of a weakness and they don't seem to have full confidence in their fullbacks, but the rest of the team is quite good. Carrasso is a good keeper, though he made a big blunder against PSG.

Is he? In terms of personnel, I'm happy enough with him keeping most players fresh for the league. His job relies on success, first of all, in the league. In terms of approach, he's going to attack rather than defend - again, give me that every day of the week rather than the defeatism that dogged us in Europe last season.

I don't too much mind the team I've posted above (though as I said I'd much prefer Ings as main striker otherwise we have 4 attackers with just a handful of goals between them) however the bench is going to be weak with all those youngsters taken across. It's only a short trip to France, he could easily have taken some more experienced players (Clyne and Milner perhaps) to steady the ship if needs be. They would have appreciated the duty-frees too.

Yes. I'd prefer Ings. Origi could surprise me, I hope he does, but I'd feel more confident with Ings. But I admit I'm biased against the Europa League. Unless we can win it, and I think that's so unlikely as to be insignificant, I'd rather we go out early on so that we can concentrate on the league, and I'd rather we go out after showing some promise and flair, so that people might think, 'Well, I hope they're back soon,' instead of being negative and cautious, causing people to think, 'Good riddance'.

I'd like Europe to be Rodgers' laboratory this year. Really try out ideas in those games. See what options are viable, what players can do, what innovations are worth pursuing. And tell the players to enjoy it. Have a bit of fun. Show off a bit, too. The league would benefit from that. Everton just tried to win it last year, as did Spurs, like deluded twerps, and all they got for their efforts was exhaustion, a loss of form and fitness and a decline in the league.

We need a result in the league, it makes sense to rotate some players out of the first team so they get a proper rest, the likes of Sakho Toure Moreno Can Coutinho Ings should have enough top level experience between them to bolster the younger more inexperienced players. Its not like we are sending out 11 kids

Supposedly : 3-4-2-1 for Liverpool: Mignolet; Gomez, Toure, Sakho; Ibe, Rossiter, Can, Moreno; Lallana, Coutinho; Origi. Confirmed by James Pearce and several others.

I quite like that team. For anyone that's in the know what's this Rossiter chap like? I keep hearing good things but all I can think of is images of 'Rising Damp' and 'Reginald Perrin'!

Ha. Leonard Rossiter had a trial for Everton once. Fact. Anyway, Jordan is an excellent prospect - very calm, confident, good on the ball, a natural leader. I think there's much more to his game than being a holding midfielder, which appears to be where he's being groomed to play, but he's a smart lad who is very mature for his years. He needs to get stronger, but he's a real prospect, and probably represents the best prospect of becoming that 'Scouse heartbeat' of te team.

Cheers Macca - Appreciate the loss of 70's sit-com imagery 😉

I'm seeing:

Mignolet
Gomez Toure, Sakho Moreno
Rossiter Can
Ibe Coutinho Lallana
Origi

Ings has to start ahead of Origi for me. Of the two of them, he's most likely to come good this season so he needs game time. He ain't gonna be getting much once studge is back.

Maybe Origi got the nod due to the fact we're playing French opposition and he plied his trade in Ligue 1 for the last two seasons?? Perhaps he can use his knowledge of the Bordeaux players to his advantage. He also might have a point to prove against French opposition.

I wanted Ings to play as well though.

That's what I said when I checked the kick off time last night as Bex reminded me (it could have been the first time she told me afaik, cos I can't ever remember when she tells me anything at all) that she was in Birmingham today, leaving at 6am & not getting home until 7pm earliest.

I'm gonna be lucky if I catch half the match.
