So on to Bordeaux..

Look at the bright side. It can't possibly get much worse on the pitch. We can only improve from here.

No, we can stay the same as we have been for the last however many games. That's what I expect, to be honest, because I don't have any faith left in the manager turning it around.

FFS mate - You can't have an Avatar like that and write depressing shite like that. Of course it will get better! It always gets better. BEST BELIEVE!!!

I think playing him at LB was a huge mistake. That's what I meant.

Apart from the penalty vs. United he's been universally praised for his performances this season, by fans, team-mates, manager, commentators and ex-players (friend and foe) alike. Considering the options (Moreno & Enrique) he's clearly the best (defensively) and will only grow and improve with experience. You are way off base on this one. And he's going to be an absolute monster, I can see him becoming a fixture for Liverpool and England for years to come (at CB - but he's doing just fine at LB for now).

I think he was all over the place against West Ham (piss poor) as well and looked terrible against United where he was dragged out of position many times. He's a headless chicken in terms of structure and positioning. It's clear he never played there before at this level. Him and Lovren - I dont know what BR is thinking. Christ!

It's not a question about his quality. I think he will be a monster - as a CB. Never at Leftback. It's a mistake. One of many.

Look, there are loads asking for his head. He would not play a weakened side. It will be more of the same until he gets some breathing space or is sacked.

I wish Rossiter will play though. We need some of that youthful enthusiasm to rub off on most of the pussies that were playing over the weekend.

Nah. You're way off on this one. You expect a youngster to make some errors and be inconstant from game to game but in general he's been damn good and the fact we are not leaking goals from his defensive play says it all really. Carra showed on his chalkboard just how much Gomez has contributed to the strengthening of the defence.

Carra also showed how much he was dragged out of position against United and what that meant for Ings.

You are right - he is young and he will make mistakes. And he is - isn't he? He shouldn't be playing there imo.

You think he was Ace against Hammers?? He wasn't - trust me.

Daniel Cleary, Irish born centre back aged 19 has joined the squad for this game.

I can't remember the last time we had an Irish player come through the ranks

I didn't say he was ace against West Ham so stop putting words into my mouth. He was pulled across a few times vs. United, but I doubt Ings went back especially to cover him. In any case the manager was right there on the touchline and can get a message across very easily if a player is not following instructions .. at HT at worst ... and an experienced CB such as Lovren should also be instructing him, isn't that what he was bought for ? To be vocal lead the back line ? This didn't happen on either count. Fact is Gomez still wasn't crowding Lovren so in fact our whole back line was pulled across and he was just maintaining his distance to Lovren.

Carra showed how we got dragged deep and basically feel intp a back 5 in the past 3 games - which hurt us. Obviously that isn't Gomez fault but it happened because he seeks the center - which is fair enough. He is a CB after all.

I don't think deploying him at LB is a good idea at all. You like Gomez at LB - we disagree - Move on?

Christian Benteke and James Milner will not feature in Liverpool's Europa League clash with Bordeaux on Thursday after they were left out of the travelling party to France.

The ECHO understands that Connor Randall has joined Jordan Rossiter to make the trip to France for the first game in the group stages. Rossiter, of course, will fully expect to play at least some part in the game. His chances will have increased with Milner left back in Liverpool.

Randall, 19, from Maghull, pulled out of an LFC Foundation event last night after being given the nod to head to Melwood for the trip. The Reds do not have a huge amount of cover for Nathaniel Clyne at right-back and Randall’s strong-running style could provide the cover Rodgers is looking for in that role

As well as the two young Merseysiders, Salford-born U21 captain Cameron Brannagan is another to make the French trip. The attacking midfielder only missed out on the pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East due to a badly-timed injury.

Not sure how ready Rossiter is yet. Arsenal away was a very tough game for him to enter and he seemed content to just survive it and block off the space and try get a foot it.

He would benefit from having someone like Milner/Henderson beside him at Bordeaux but neither traveled. It will be interesting to see if Rossiter starts. Best of luck to him anyway.

True. I'm disappointed Teix didn't make the EL squad. He must be going back out on loan for that to make sense?

It will be good to see Ings up top as well.

I suspect Rossiter will start given both Henderson and Milner won't, and given that Rodgers referenced Rossiter not going on loan and being given opportunities at the club this season.

Liverpool have flown to France for their opening Europa League group clash with Bordeaux on Thursday night without a host of star names. Boss Brendan Rodgers has decided to rest Christian Benteke, James Milner, Lucas Leiva, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Martin Skrtel with one eye on Sunday’s Premier League clash with Norwich City at Anfield.

However, Philippe Coutinho has travelled after serving his domestic suspension and Adam Lallana is fit enough to return to action after a thigh problem. Captain Jordan Henderson is also absent after undergoing treatment on a heel injury in America.

It means that Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure are expected to be the centre-back combination against the Ligue One outfit. Alberto Moreno is likely to start at left-back with Joe Gomez in contention to switch to the opposite flank. Youngster Jordan Rossiter is poised to make his European debut for the Reds in midfield with Divock Origi making his first start for the club up front. Academy graduates Connor Randall, Cameron Brannagan and Dan Cleary have also travelled, and would all make their senior bows if called upon.

I can see us getting turned over here.

Always hate when we play a completely second string squad of players who either have never played with each other, basically never featured for the first team, or both.

Either bed in a couple new players amidst an otherwise settled side or rotate among squad players. Don't do both. What good does it do to the youngsters to set them up for failure?

We don't have a "settled" first team or any cohesive style of play for them to bed into, regardless of team selection.

It'll be interesting to see if the team of fringe players and youngsters can play better after very little playing time between them than the supposed first team. That's what happened at Real Madrid last season. We still got beat but it was comfortably our best european performance of last season, though that's like saying it won the best dog turd competition.

Dan Cleary, Connor Randall, Pedro Chrivella, Adam Phillips and Ryan Fulton are other prospects to make the plane to France for Thursday night’s 6pm kick-off.

No Benteke, Lucas, Clyne, Milner or Skrtel.

Brave move from Rodgers. Possibly a foolish one, but I'm kinda happy cos the Europa League is a load of shite so we may as well give the kids a game.

If this side loses & then the first team lose at the weekend he's just shot himself in the foot.

There's a real risk that bullet will then ricochet of the floor into his head too.

If he loses this the pressure will mount - 95% of supporters in the Echo poll want Rodgers to take the EL seriously.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted he must rediscover his attacking instinct after losing it during Liverpool’s recent slump, writes David Maddock in Bordeaux .

The Reds' boss revealed here in French wine country that he has absolutely no thoughts of trying to grind out a few results after a drop in form that has already inspired talk of pressure – and elevated him to bookies' favourite for the sack.
Instead, the Northern Irishman believes the opposite is required.

He freely admitted he can understand why some critics are suggesting his team has lost the identity that marked him out as a brave coach.

And now, after naming Philippe Coutinho , Adam Lallana, Jordon Ibe and Divock Origi in a four-man front line that will take the game to their hosts in Thursday's Europa League group-stage opener, Rodgers is determined to return to the front-foot mind-set that so nearly won Liverpool the title two seasons ago.

“I can understand why people would say that,” he said in response to a question of whether his team has lost their attacking, possession-based identity. “But it’s good that I at least have an identity as a coach and that a way of working throughout my life is clear.

“I know we have to get back to that exciting way of working we have had for the past couple of seasons. I repeat, we have to ensure we reintroduce the way we have been working in the last few years.”

Liverpool, incredibly, will go into the game against Bordeaux not only under pressure from two straight league defeats, but also with a starting XI unable to boast even ONE goal for the club in Europe between them.

Only Coutinho and Origi have scored in European competition, but both did so before arriving at Anfield.
The rest of the likely team have not opened their tally in any UEFA competition.

But even though that leaves the Reds facing a huge task, it is clear Rodgers wants his side to be bold and play with all guns blazing.

“There’s no temptation to be cautious, no. It fits hand in glove in terms of how we want to work,” he admitted.

“We have seen in the last few performances when we don’t play so well and bring our ideas into the game, then we have far less chance of winning. So we have to get back to our way off working, and it gives us a greater chance to get results.

“The key thing is getting the performance level right. You can always lose a game, but it is how you lose them; and the last couple of defeats haven’t been ways you want to lose a game.

"Over the opening games we got some results but not been at that level of intensity of our game.

“We’re about being on the front foot and having that courage to play and play with that freedom but also a structure. That’s something we will really focus on.”

Coutinho returns from suspension while fellow midfielder Lallana is back from injury. But Rodgers travelled to France without James Milner, Christian Benteke and Nathaniel Clyne, while skipper Jordan Henderson is still injured.

Good for Rodgers, I say. I really wanted him to respond to the pressure by trying to make his style work better, rather than try to muddle through by being something he isn't, and it sounds like he's going for it. I think that's great. He spoils it a bit with that comment about 'we don't play so well' being more defensive - surely he has to correct that as a coach rather than just say 'we can't do it well enough' - but it's good he's being true to himself. Rodgers got the job for how he gets a team playing, so all you can ask of him is to stick to his principles so we can judge him on that.
