Nicked from an Arsenal website, but contains 2 other target's stats

Wigan’s Al-Habsi was the worst in the League, making 10 errors and conceding 7 goals but of the keepers who played more than 10 matches David de Gea and Simon Mignolet were the best. Both of them made just two errors and de Gea conceded just one goal.

In terms of saves per error, then, Mignolet comes out looking very good indeed with 62 saves per slip whilst Pepe Reina - very weak with just 7 saves per error. Szczesny and Begovic are both around 14 and Cesar had 21.

Working our way right to left, the next column is claims and failed claims. Cesar makes a pretty good impression and frankly Mignolet’s 3 failed claims is not that bad when you consider that he was third in the League in claims attempted. Incidentally, Schwarzer was #1 last season and only failed once out of 165 attempts.

Next to that is punches and punches are a controversial stat. Mignolet led the League in punches and many people consider that a sign of weakness. Perhaps. You would rather see the keeper claim than punch, as we see with Begovic who made just 6 punches. But the other side of that debate is whether the keeper is “flapping” at the ball which could correlate with a high error rate though I can’t make that assumption without looking at that as its own metric. Still, I think Mignolet’s punches are fairly important to the overall picture because as you can see, the kid was worked, a lot, and while he conceded a number of goals he also had to make a lot of important defensive actions and only made 2 errors. We’ll get to this more in a minute.

I had something else in mind for the first picture?

keepers at poor clubs tend to look disproportionately better than they are, constantly making saves. at lfc you might have nothing to do for 85 min and then be called into action, something like this cannot be tested at a club like sunderland.

That's probably what Rodgers wants to do. At least I really hope that's the case. Reina can be excellent when on form, but he needs QUALITY competition - he didn't have that in years and it was starting to show.

I dont really see the logic in this, hes not better than the keeper we have. If we are spending money just to introduce competition then we should be buying a younger keeper who will be ready to take over from Reina in 1 or 2 years and put pressure on him, not a keeper who is neither a long term replacement or an instant improvement

It's a terrible idea.

Spending good money on a second choice goalkeeper is one of the biggest wastes of money out there.

We could have signed a top player with all the money we wasted in fees and wages on Carson, Martin, Padelli, Itandje, Cavlieri, Jones, Doni etc.

Rumors of Reina(And Valdes) moving on seem to be heating up again. That being said, we can do a lot better than Mignolet, by looking abroad.

Maybe I'm just being naive, but it always feels like there are way more quality keepers available around than there are quality clubs, nevermind quality clubs looking for a new keeper. Lloris only cost Spurs £11M, I can't imagine a player like Mandanda would be much more.

My general feelings are

1. it would make business sense if we can fund Reina's replacemen with his sales, not in terms of pushing him out of the club but it if he does leave/command a reasonable selling price/offer received,

2. was Reina miles better than Dudek when he was signed? (The Villarreal team he played in was midtable back then - only in his last season did they begin their transformation under Pellegrini). We obviously want top class talents and ready made replacements but such players aren't easy to land for the fees we are able/prepared to pay.

3. for a goalie to be voted North East Football Writers' Player of the Year, ahead of Newcastle duo Hatem Ben Arfa and Tim Krul, who finished second and third respectively and kept 15 clean sheets in 2012 (only Hart had more, with 17 - and Joe Hart was a £600k signing from Shrewsbury) - considering the team he's playing in, surely he's not that poor a player?

Certainly not a poor player, but I think there are sexier names out there for reasonable prices.

No doubt about that, I'm not specifically rooting for Mignolet, just thought goalies can't really be judged by their fanciful reputation/names. Courtois is another example. Had just 1 season of football with Genk before joining AM via Chelsea on loan. As for sexier names like Steve Mandanda, would he want to leave Champions League football for us? Besides, the likes of Monaco has been linked with a move for him.

Today's report:

http://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport...o-sign-10m-sunderland-star-mignolet-1-5770671

LIVERPOOL look to have won the race to sign Sunderland keeper Simon Mignolet – and he could complete a £10m move to Anfield within days.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has made the Belgian stopper one of his top targets of the summer but faced potential competition from Arsenal who are also involved in a summer of rebuilding.

Liverpool are looking to do their transfer business early this summer and made an opening bid of £6.5m.

Sunderland rejected that offer out of hand for a player who was pivotal in keeping the club in the Premier League last season but the Reds have not been dissuaded and have tabled several improved offers, rising to £8m early this week.

Yesterday, the Merseysiders were prepared to go to £9m but Sunderland are holding out for a fee in excess of £10m for a player Steve Bruce paid £2m for three years ago this week.

Now it looks like Liverpool have accepted Sunderland’s valuation.

And with the Reds prepared to pay a fee which the Black Cats’ believe approaches the keeper’s market value, Mignolet appears on his way to Anfield.

Arsenal could always step in with an 11th hour bid but their are no immediate signs on an intervention from the Emirates and, that being the case, the deal to take Mignolet to Liverpool is on.

The club’s hottest property has been the subject of intense speculation since the end of the season and talks on an extension to his contract at the Stadium of Light, which still has two years to run, had stalled as the player and his agents consider their options.

Mandanda's no better than Mignolet IMHO. The grass isn't always greener elsewhere.

If he's coming then it's obvious Reina is on his way. Mignolet needs regular football in world cup year. He's under pressure from that keeper chelsea have sent out on loan (can't remember his name).

Courtois?

Does it not concern anyone that we are (potentially) losing our two main defensive voices in Carragher and Reina?
