A LIVERPOOL fan threw himself in front of a train nearly 22 years after selling his match ticket to a pal who died in the Hillsborough disaster, an inquest heard.
50-year-old Stephen Whittle suffered self-blame and depression following the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
His unnamed pal was one of the 96 Liverpool supporters who were crushed to death on packed terraces .
Stephen, of Wigan, stepped in front of a train on the Southport to Manchester line, driver Keith Saxon told the inquest today.
Dr Ashok Atrey told the coroner: “Stephen was offered counselling but wasn’t keen on it. He said he didn’t have suicidal thoughts.”
Coroner Jennifer Leeming concluded: “He took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed by his suffering from diagnosed depressive illness. That tragic event that happened so long ago is still reaching out and touching people.”
Mum Hilda added: “Stephen lived and breathed Liverpool FC and he went to lots of memorial services for those who lost their lives. We still can’t believe he isn’t here. He was the most lovely lad you could imagine.”
