Now that Gerrards out for three games, maybe we'll see more of Shelvey. That is if Dalglish continue playing three central midfielders.

Oh yeah Cole, he wasn't even on the bench, right?

I'd rather have Shelvey on the pitch as long as he never tries to pull an Alonso.

The thing with Alonso is that he succeeded twice, but he tried it almost regularly.

What was with Cole?

Slight ankle injury according to a commentator.

Thats a good question KJ....and i hope the answer is yes but who knows?

Jonjo needs more composure on the ball and needs to improve his decision-making but give him time.

Quite. He's nowhere near the finished article. He also lacks a yard of pace when on the ball which can see him caught out when carrying it forward against premiership players. It's a big step up from League 1 to this level and he'll need time to adapt and improve.

He'll hopefully prove a decent enough player for us but imo he's got a long way to go to force his way into the squad on a regular basis.

His haphazard energetic way of going about things won us the free kick that was about our only chance of equalising. He's defo a bit of a liability in some respects but he looks a lot more likely to create stuff than the usual suspects, so I'd like to see him given more chances.

Well, he certainly lacks pace, which is obvious to anyone who has ever seen him play, but that didn't/ hasn't stopped the likes of Xabi Alonso.

I think Shelvey has shown some really positive signs, and involvement in the first team is just what he needs, but yeah, he's got a way to go yet.

True, he'll only improve and realise his potential if given some match time and hopefully Kenny will sub him on whenever he's got the opportunity.

I just think he's a bit more raw than most seem to think on here. I can see how most would want him to be the next Gerrard or something, given the lack of strength in depth we've got in midfield.

He'll never be the next Gerrard because he's not that sort of player. His potential is that of a bigger and stronger Meireles perhaps. Hopefully with more goalscoring ability.

Yeah I think it might serve him well to play him a bit deeper. He seems to be playing in an advanced attacking role, but he looks much better picking the ball up deeper and looking for the pass, like Alonso.

You see you can post without being negative or swearing.

Marvellous.

Nah, he loses the ball too much to be played deep. He needs to be causing shit further upfield.

I think you will find in some time that Shelvey's best attribute is his ability on the ball.

Shelvey needs to work on his first touch, but his attitude and approach to the game yesterday was spot on. I only wish he had twatted Lucas after Lucas had a go at him for trying the shot from the free kick.

He looks a little nervous and anxious and to me that's why he ends up losing composure at times. As he gets more games, he'll grow in confidence and I think we'll see less errors from him.

The encouraging thing is that he does seem to have a bit of class about him and ability to pick out passes. The only issue is that we don't really have a natural partner - a Maschareno - for him at the moment. Him and Meireles are a little too similar in some respects and neither of them have enough bite. If the team was very attacking, very possession focused and full of confidence, it'd be less of an issue... but at the moment it is.

Yes, that's an excellent point. Which is why a DM like Lass Diarra should really be a priority this window. We need more steel in midfield.

Having said that, I think a partnership of Meireles and Shelvey will work well at Anfield.
