Shame on you for saying that Suarez is better than Barnes

What do you mean personally? In that he personally thought that Suarez did better than Barnes did that season? You do know that Barnes scored 28 in total. That's two goals less than Suarez who's a striker. It's shame we don't have any assist stats for Barnes but I'm guessing he got more than 11 assists that season.

I'd take more notice of Suarez goal stat if Barnes was a striker and since I don't have any assist stats for him either, it becomes a question of skill. Like I said before "skill wise" Barnes was better than Suarez. There was just more to his game.

Why do you get caught up on what I said about Coutinho? The lad has potential.

You said that winning the league added weight to it - you used it as a means to big-up Barnes, I meant that Suarez himself, regardless of Silverware, "personally" had a better season. You forget that Suarez has pretty much carried us at times, Barnes was surrounded by quality and playing in a comparatively less cultured and less competitive game.

The Coutinho point was fucking stupid and that last comment only serves to compound that, "potential"? So Coutinho is closer to doing what Barnes did based on half a season and something he only has the suggested ability to be able to achieve, yet Suarez is dismissed easily?

When you're a fan of someone, as we've seen with Barnes, Aquilani and Coutinho, you don't half get overexcited and exaggerate their abilities to get your point across, you really don't need to, but suggesting that unequivocally Barnes is the better player is just an opinion Modo, one that's lacking any real perspective or detachment to provide a fairer, balanced view. The fact you blindly tossed in that Coutinho point just pierces holes all over a view that's already pissing all over the place.

Can we not just agree that defenders in the 80s were worse and be done?

Couthino actually doesn't have anything to do with this thread, but you just keep hanging on to my Coutinho comment for dear life.

You make it look like I'm saying that Coutinho is better than Suarez when I'm merely saying that Coutinho has the potential to become as good as Barnes.
If it makes you happy Coutinho isn't even close to Barnes either, but he's showing signs of the skill, passing, technique that made Barnes into a legend.

What the hell does Aquilani have to do with anything, I won that discussion a long time ago.
Adam was clearly shit. 😉

Barnes had a better left foot but was let down by a shit dress sense.

Suarez has a better right foot but is let down in the dental department.

Too close to call.

@mark1975 **TROLL ALERT** stop feeding.

I'm done, he keeps asking me why I'm mentioning Coutinho, because you threw him into the argument as having the potential to get closer to him than Suarez! So it's ok to big up potential as having it, but someone who's statistically "done it" in a weaker team than the one Barnes played in, doesn't come close.

FUCK.ME.

Both John Barnes and Luis Suarez are fantastic players. But they are different types of player.

Personally I think Suarez is better technically than Barnes, however, the sight of John Barnes taking on the RM and then RB was a joy to see. Barnes in full flow was unstoppable, see the game against QPR in 1987 or against Everton the same year. Or against Coventry in 1990.

Suarez is equally unstoppable but in a different style. He wriggles and twists and turns. He's like a pickpocket, Digger was like an ice dancer.

I love them both!

Why is Ronny Rosenthal not included in this debate?

He did score the perfect hattrick on his debut

I'd pick Dalglish over Suarez every time. Less flash, yes, but a peerless genius. I'm not sure how you'd compare Barnes with Suarez, they were very different types. Digger in his first two seasons was consistently brilliant.

I wouldn't choose any winger we've had over Barnes in his pomp.

There are at least 5 stikers I would have before Suarez.

Modo, why are you so obsessed about this comparison. People may have different views. It's perfectly OK. Barnes was a magnificent footballer who gave me many hours of joy watching him. So is Suarez. If I have to chose between them it would be Suarez.

Move on.

Oh, and it's the worst thread title I've seen for a long time.

Booooooo

It's Barnes, for 2 reasons:

1 - He was better
2 - He's not a massive fucking cockhead
