You don't read what people write - so it's pointless even discussing with you.
That's what I always think when I see vids from 20+ years ago - imagine what some of the players of today would've done back then (tackles and all). The game has evolved.
Anyways, thanks for posting the vid Modo. I don't think many of us have seen Barnes play before so that's been really useful in trying to make the comparison.

Barnes was overall better than Suarez is now. Perhaps over the course of a career Suarez will shade him just, but he hasn't at this stage imo.

Even if that's right Mystic it is still one Season, and one Season where he also was VERY poor in terms of behavior.
Barnes in his prime was a wonderful footballer in every way, Suarez isn't far off to be honest, but I don't think it's controversial at all to believe Digger is still ahead.
Having said that the Coutinho remark is pretty bold, if not daft. I do hope however Modo is proved right.

The Coutinho comparison I made is because of his ability to pick a pass just like Barnes used to do. Also Coutinho is a midfielder just like Barnes was.
Maybe, Barnes was playing in a much better team, and Suarez outscored him and should have been player of the year, despite missing quite a few games. To be honest your Coutinho comment just annoyed me, and just the general tone of the thread.
Completely agree, Suarez will have to have another couple of seasons like it before you can truly say he's better. Just this thread suggests it's ridiculous to even have the thought, when it most definitely isn't.
So what if he played in a better team, look at the goals he scored. Look at the position he was playing in. Some say that Suarez creates his own chances, so did Barnes.

It isnt lunacy at all. I watched John Barnes play every week, and he was unbelievable.

He meant personally. And Barnes only ever hit double figures for us for one more season after that. Suarez hit 30 goals and had 11 assists last season, you can't judge him on the success of the side, it's about personal achievement and impact. Given he's playing in a side that's being rebuilt from being a non-European competition team, I'd say that's made it even harder for Suarez to achieve what he has.
And that Coutinho comment is just fucking ridiculous. You're judging a player who's been here 6 months as being "closer to Barnes" than a player who's just had two and a half brilliant seasons for us? His record for us at the moment reads: 96 appearances, 51 goals and 24 assists. That's phenomenal. And Suarez "could" have easily been player of the year, if he hadn't acted like a dickhead, so that point's neither here nor there.
Perhaps it might be more prudent to consider what Luis might have achieved in that 89-90 team.

What do you mean personally? In that he personally thought that Suarez did better than Barnes did that season? You do know that Barnes scored 28 in total. That's two goals less than Suarez who's a striker. It's shame we don't have any assist stats for Barnes but I'm guessing he got more than 11 assists that season.
I'd take more notice of Suarez goal stat if Barnes was a striker and since I don't have any assist stats for him either, it becomes a question of skill. Like I said before "skill wise" Barnes was better than Suarez. There was just more to his game.
