Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has spoken of his disappointment at failing to lure Sami Hyypia back to the club this summer.

The Finland international, 36, had been tipped to return to the club in a player-coach role following his Bosman transfer to Bayer Leverkusen last year, after 10 years of service at Anfield, to form an integral part of Hodgson's new backroom regime.

Hodgson has now revealed that Liverpool made a bid to Leverkusen to recapture their former captain but saw it rejected due to Hyypia's importance to the Bundesliga outfit.

He added: "I can see players like Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard never leaving Liverpool Football Club. I can see them always being part of the club. In the same way I'm a bit disappointed that my attempts to bring Sami Hyypia back failed.

"It only failed because he's so important to Bayer Leverkusen. We couldn't get him out of his contract. He's one I would also put in the Jamie Carragher-Steven Gerrard mould, Liverpool for life.

"Unfortunately he was let go at the end of the season before last and we can't get him back. He's too valuable to them."

Hodgson also confirmed that Liverpool will offer Carragher a new contract once the club's ownership saga is resolved at the end of this summer.

The veteran defender has made no secret of his desire to remain at Liverpool but revealed that he may consider plying his trade elsewhere if he was not a regular fixture in the starting line-up.

Carragher, 32, is now in the final year of his current deal at Anfield after negotiations broke down in March but Hodgson has pledged to reopen talks with the vice-captain once new owners are installed, with the club's board confident of a takeover being completed shortly.

"I'm sure it [a contract extension] will be a priority," he added.

"Quite frankly so much has happened in the last five weeks, the hours I've spent at the club are enormous, that we haven't actually got round to discussing contracts with players.

"I now know that Carragher has got one year left. That's the only contract of a player that I know about. If you asked me how many years the others have got, I haven't got a clue."

Sami can come back next year. Strange that me as a small foreign gentleman on the other side of the world knows the contract situations of most our players but our manager does not.

I would be surprised if Hodgson didn't know how long remained on our players contracts - a little white lie there methinks to allay fears of players as to why maybe contract extensions have not yet been addressed. We can do that after the transfer season has closed.

Sami was voted the best defender in the Bundesliga last season ..... no surprise Leverkusen don't want to release him !

He's fucking epic. My favorite player ever.

But its getting a bit silly trying to reconstruct the Liverpool team of 2006 isn't it?

I'm not sure who could do a job this season but I'm sure he'll be an excellant coach next season for us.

I thought he was too old when he left and wasn't too worried. How we could of used him last season!
[/quote]

True, and im not comparing the two at all, but the greek did a job for us last season when he was needed!

Sami went at the right time for both parties. The Bundesliga is not as quick and would suit Sami down to his boots!

He'll be back next season!

if sami were on the books he would be the best defender at the club, I know that is blasphemy for some people but that's how I feel. he was relagated to the bench in favor of inferior options.

He was perfectly capable of playing in the Premiership. None of his performances ever gave a hint of the possibility that he might not be up to it any more. He was too often judged on his age rather than his performances.

At the time it looked as though he wouldn't play as regularly as he wanted to here, so it was a good Leverkusen was a good option for him. Sadly, it turned out that he would've featured quite regularly had he have stayed.

MASHER'S ONLY GOT 2 YEARS. SELL HIM NOW!

Exactly.

It's not as if he were 30% or some shit number faster 5 years ago or something.

sami has never had pace to lose. sami's game was always based on reading the game and snuffing out danger with brilliant positioning, despite being at the club 10 years how many last ditch tackles did sami ever make?

Bayer Leverkusen chief Wolfgang Holzhauser has confirmed that Sami Hyypia wanted to re-sign for Liverpool.

New Anfield manager Roy Hodgson confessed earlier in August that he had unsuccessfully attempted to prise the veteran centre-back out of the remaining one year of his contract in Germany.

Hyypia left Liverpool at the end of the 2008/09 season when former boss Rafa Benitez decided not to offer the ex-Finland defender a new deal after 10 years on Merseyside.

But Holzhauser has confirmed that Hyypia was keen to return to England, having worked with Hodgson at international level.

Holzhauser told the Express newspaper: "Sami came to us asking if there would be any chance to return to Liverpool.

"We had an open discussion. Sami accepted straight away that we were desperate to keep him here.

"He is too important for us and a valuable part of our first-team squad. We could easily imagine keeping Sami at our club for more than the remaining year of his contract.

"He may add another season on the pitch and we are also considering adding him to our backroom staff afterwards, if he wants."

I doubt it. We'd have to pay massively over the odds, and we can't afford that. Can't really blame the Jairmens in the circs.

I don't blame them at all.

He's a quality addition to any team and the fact that we didnt move heaven and earth to keep him here was our error, not theirs.

They can fuck right off if they think Sami's staying on after his contract to take up any kinda role with them.

He is *ours*

Sami Hyypia has agreed to extend his contract with Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen by an extra year before then joining the coaching team.

The Finnish defender joined the club last summer from Liverpool and made an instant impact with his experience in the centre of the defence last season. His original deal was due to expire next summer, but the 36-year-old feels he can play on for another year before ending his career.

As part of his new contract, he will in 2012 join the coaching team on a two-year contract.

"We are glad that such a key player and symbol of our team like Sami has been tied down to us for a longer term," said Bayer's general manager Wolfgang Holzhauser on his club's website.
