SA v England & Wales

Maybe one day, if and when I do retire and have time at hand, I might just put up my legs and brave a test cricket match! (Bringing along a portable TV, Radio and maybe an easy chair to snooze in)

Day one... England 39-4 (dodgy no-ball debate going on... one things for sure, Harper should lose his international standard over this series).

Recovered to 100-4 at lunch.

One question though? WHY DID STRAUSS BAT?? For the last 2/3 weeks all everyone has been saying is how this is a bowler friendly track.

No surprise that the three English Saffers surrendered their wickets *whistles*

Edit: 115-5 LTW must be loving this along with all other saffer forumites.

until we bat, i can't really 'love' it b/c knowing our team, we may bat as poorly (though Amla's catch to dismiss Strauss was fantastic)

This test seems unlikely to last 4 whole days let alone 5. I reckon less than 800 runs in total.

In the current conditions, there is swing and seam movement off the pitch. If South Africa have to bat in the same conditions, England have a chance of getting them out cheaply too.

Fucking disaster, im off on Monday and was hoping for a nice day revising in front of the cricket. Not much chance of that now.

I'm no expert on cricket but I'm going to have a cheeky wager on England taking a first innings lead. I reckon Sidebottom will get lots out of the pitch and SA could struggle to match England's seemingly paltry total.

Edit: I got about 11/2 odds, so I stand to lose £18 or win £103.

180 all out.

Steyn with 5 wickets, Morne with 3

Bar Colly/Bell partnership, all the others were 25 runs or less. Dominating stuff from SA ...

If we get ~400 or so, we'll win this test but since the team has been in such a generous mood over the past 3 tests - I can see an England draw or win.

You have to beat the weather, as well as us.

Still, all in all, it was such a strange, ill-advised decision to bat today.

Was it though? We've been hearing for a day or two about the pitch having been prepared to try and ensure a positive result one way or the other. Who wants to bat last on a pitch like that?

I don't think it was strange - it's true that the SA bowlers got some swing and seam movement but that was mostly due to their good bowling, especially Stein. It's not a bad wicket. Smith said that he would have batted, had he won the toss.

I think the really strange decision was the dropping of Onions in favour of Sidebottom, who hasn't played in a test match for nearly a year, and did not look particularly menacing at the start of South Africa's innings.

Steyn must be as good a seam bowler as there is in world cricket today.

That said, we have one or two decent ones ourselves. This is by no means over yet.

Yes, he's top of the world rankings for bowlers at the moment Jules.

Even though I spelt his name wrong! :-[

He's so bloody inconsistent though - I still think he's not even half the bowler Donald was ... Man what a player he was ...

87-1.

*Waves goodbye to £18*

128-1

Smith has hit some beauties today. I still have major issues with him but when he's in form, he's fantastic.

Let's hope we actually don't gift another positive result for England like we did in the 1st and 3rd tests ... Knowing us, we'll be all out for 179!

Smith was caught behind when South Africa were on 36! The umpire didn't give it out and Strauss immediately referred it to the 3rd umpire Mr. Harper.

Mr. Harper also gave it not out, which was mystifying to TV viewers who clearly heard the snick off the edge when Smith swiped at the ball.

Later it transpired that for some reason, Mr. Harper wasn't getting any sound to go with the pictures he was looking at.

Hmmmm ???

Smith is difficult to get out at the best of times, so it is a bit disheartening when you do get him out, but he isn't! :🙂

and on the contrary, he was out on a no ball in the last test ... so it all balances itself out.

I think South Africa, if they can pull this out, deserve to even the series.

Seeing that England were only saved by Onions batting at number 11 in the first and third tests, it's hard to argue with you LTW!

🙂

Seeing that we tore the Saffers to pieces by an innings and nearly a hundred runs in the Test we won, I'm not so sure.

How does what you say contradict what Portly said?

England demolished South Africa in the 2nd test, true.

England were bloody lucky to come out of the 1st and 3rd tests with 'draws', true.

I don't buy the "lucky" argument, Wizzy, especially when it happens twice in a row. What that sequence says to me is that - so far at any rate - S.Africa have simply not been good enough to close the match out against tail-enders whereas, in the one game in which there has been a positive result, your boys weren't even close.

I don't think even bad weather can save England now. If SA can rack up 300 runs tomorrow and leave England 330+ behind on first innings then they will have 2 full days to bowl them out - this will allow for regular weather breaks (unless it rains non-stop for 48 hours.
