British arrests in Australian match-fixing investigation
Australian police investigating match-fixing allegations have arrested 10 people, including British players.
The probe was prompted by information provided by the Football Federation of Australia (FFA).
"It is believed the players and staff involved are all affiliated with the one sporting club," read a Victoria Police statement.
"Many of the players arrested are from the United Kingdom, playing in the Victorian league in their off-season."
The FFA said the club in question were Southern Stars, who play in the 12-team second-tier Victorian Premier League.
A coach and nine players have been arrested and could face sentences of up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.
"The integrity of football is paramount," FFA chief David Gallop said in a statement.
"We provided information to Victoria Police within 24 hours of receiving an alert from our international betting integrity monitoring agents.
"We're determined to keep football clean. Alongside other sports bodies in Australia and globally, we must eradicate corrupt behaviour from sport."

Okay DB, let's do this again.

Sorry missed that, I was watching the kettle boil again. Some laugh

The team is Southern Stars.

Turned down two offers from them to play in the last 3 years. Thank fucking Christ for that.

They used to be flush with Irish players, but they all left cos they stopped paying wages. Apparently this was the retaliation; they forfeited games, and all loaded on knowing they'd lose.

There's a few English and Welsh lads in the side who I know pretty well. From what I hear the coach (Zaya Younan) and several of the Turkish lads are behind the betting ring. The coach is supposed to have some European connections who run some global syndicate and have been betting millions on VPL games. Not sure yet if I was playing in any of the games the major bets were laid.

It's pretty fucking bad, but it's not surprising. I think I mentioned this on here before but there were always approaches from supporters/hangers on/gang-types to take cash for throwing games.

We could all bet on our own games too, which I always found mental. There were no controls, procedures, or limits. It was completely mental that you could bet on our U-21 games too. Anytime any of the senior players was coming back from injury, they had to play a game or two for the 2's before getting back in for the seniors (you could pick 3 over 21's). I've got a few stories from those times, that are probably not best placed on the net.

Messy messy situation. These boys are fucked.

I've heard a lot of similar stories and always found it insane that such low level clubs could bet on their own games and the u21's.

Bound to happen at some stage.

My housemate's team just won the state 2 league and as Southern stars are already relegated they'll be playing them next season if they don't get thrown out completely.

When I 1st came over I heard stories that match throwing was very common in the last few games of the season to make some money to keep clubs afloat.
