Ryan Babel: Give me one last chance at Liverpool FC

I don't mean to sound like an apologist for Benitez, but it does always strike me as a tad silly when fans suggest that the man who actually bought a player is the one who is too stupid to rate him highly enough, and not interested in seeing him improve. It's somewhat presumptuous.
I don't think anyone would like to suggest that Rafa has no interest or desire to Babel improve, rather that he has thus far been unable to bring about a signifance improvement in the player.

I'm still not quite sure what the plan for Babel was last season to be honest. Riera effectively replaced him as first choice in the summer and even El Zhar and N'Gog edged ahead of him on occasions. Perhaps a lot of the blame does lie at the feet of the player - who knows - but ultimately I suppose we have to put the question of blame to one side and decide whether he's going to make it at Liverpool. Based on the evidence of last season, I just don't see Rafa placing enough faith in Babel for him to force his way into the first team. I'd absolutely love to be wrong though, of course.

It has to start with Babel though. The fact that, at times, he has played well and looked dangerous only throws into sharper relief the number of times he's failed to do so.

I think there's definite ability there, but I'm not convinced there's enough to persevere with him indefinitely. If we get a reasonable offer I'd definitely cash it in.

Good. Hope he stays.

He just needs a bit of confidence.
Spot on.

He looks like Collymore, with that same glazed expression and he'll end up like Collymore if he's not careful.

Undoubtedly talented, but going the way of the wasteful few who are given talent at birth but don't use it to there full potential.

Or maybe it's just a case of '2nd season-itis' or a young player showing inconsistency in a new league. BTW he's not as mentally messed up as Collymore was.

Yes Ryan, what you need is a "chance". Cos 90 fucking games and 2 years here certainly isn't enough.

Fuck him off. He's Cisse without the wife-beating.

I'd prefer to get rid but I don't think we'd get much for him. If he stays, I'd assume it was for financial reasons i.e. not being able to take the hit on the money lost and not having the cash for a decent replacement.
Everyone talks about potential but I only see pace and a rock hard shot with this guy, he isn't really that good. That said, his goal scoring record was decent in his first year. He was a disaster last season.

Give him yet another chance ? Why ? Other than the odd performance here and there, whenever he starts he's not lived up to the billing. If we can really get 10M for him then that could be the difference between Downing & Silva, which one do you prefer ?

Thanks for the memories Ryan. You are not what we need if we are to bring home the EPL next season.

Loan him to Newcastle or back to Ajax, somewhere he's going to start twice a week. Get some confidence playing regular football, develop as a player and bring him back for the later stages of the CL in Jan.

Without a run of games, he's going to fester.
in all honesty I think preseason will be enough to restore his confidence. he had a very good first season after preseason and have a torrid season after missing preseason.
I am not really sure if his first season was good and his second season was torrid. In his first season people were more sympathetic towards him as he was young, had a reputation, and showed flashes of his ability sporadically.

I think his second season was the same and everyone was less sympathetic towards him as he still showed only flashes with no
discernible improvement which lead to the fans and management loosing faith in him.

Babel? Compared to Collymore and Cisse?

Not even close.
babel is no where near either in regards to end product but I think he has the ability to change that.
The thing is, yesterday he looked like the player we want him to be. Using his pace, getting past the fullback, always looking for the ball and creating chances. Looking like he actually care.

Shame he doesnt to this every game.
But playing a wing position for the Netherlands means that your job is to put pressure on the very last line of defenders, and its clear that Ryan has the pace and power to do this. But Liverpool is putting their pressure a lot lower than the Netherlands does, so a left side job in Liverpool demands other qualities as well.

I've actually stopped seing this talent. All i see now is a Djimi Traore.

No control, no vision, no passion.

We might as well call him pinball, because the ball acts like one everytime it hits him. When he does control it, he suddenly thinks he's Messi and goes off on a run that end up down an alley(read with or without the ball there).

Maybe its wrong, but these days you dont often get 3 seasons to settle in. Youth isnt an excuse. Loan or sell, not worth another season

Out of topic, who was that bird that Babel was banging awhile back ?

Oh yeah...now I remember...its that slappa Danielle Lloyd, former Miss Great Britain...pmsl

The frustrating thing with Babel is that he shows glimpses of what could be. However, he fails to deliver consistently. It must be a mental thing as the ability is obviously there.

What he needs is some veteran pro winger/striker to give him the mother of all pep talks.

Galatasary have made inquiries about Babel's availability, according to The Times.

How many overrated shite wingers do the Turks want from us?

I might get pillered for this but i feel that Leto will be a more than capable replacement for Babel.

From the few times i've seen him play, he has good control with both feet and can put in a wicked cross. Plus from all our reserves/young players going on loan, he went to the top division in another league.

Only concern is whether if he can take the physical demands of the EPL.

I believe it may be time for Babel to move for both his sake and ours. He needs to develop further in a less demanding environment first where his boss can accept a mistake or two. Rafa can't allow that for liverpool at this level even when we are leading 2-3 goals. How many times have we wished that he would put on a young one when we had a comfortable lead but he didn't..

He's nowhere near good enough.

It's not even worth getting into to be honest.

Come on Ryan, you gotta give him a chance, after all he's only 23 and has all the technical attributes to make a fantastic winger. (just googled: he's 1.9m tall. Unless he's drogba i believe he can hold himself quite well in the EPL).

Checking his stats he came over to liverpool when he was 21. And that might have stunted his growth a little bit, not playing enough competitive games and such which is more we can say for Babel who has been given a chance time after time but still needs more than what Benitez has already given.

It's all very well being a good age, the ideal height, and having the right build to play, but if you're not very good with a football at your feet, then you're pretty much fucked aren't you.

My only memory of him is that home defeat to Olympique de Marseille in the Champions League. Rabbit in the fucking headlights. He couldn't have looked more out of place if he'd worn an Everton shirt for the evening, and sauntered around the pitch chanting "murderers!"

A quick check of Wikipedia shows that since then, he's playyed 22 times for Olympiakos and scored 1 goal.

Attributes my arse.

Hee.. i remember that game as well but we were fucking dire everywhere on the pitch not just leto.
As you said, base on current stats he's not worthy to play for liverpool BUT if Benitez wants him back after a loan deal it means something. All of our players who go on loan under Benitez never come back.

Hopefully Leto will turn out better than everyone expects.
