Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson says he remains in the dark as to whether Fernando Torres will commit his future to the club.

Hodgson has been waiting to hear from the Spanish striker, who has been widely tipped to depart Anfield over the summer following their disappointing seventh-placed finish in the Premier League last season and off-the-field turbulence.

Torres is resting after helping Spain to their first ever World Cup crown but is in discussions with managing director Christian Purslow in a bid to sort out his future.

But Hodgson says he has not received any updates from Purslow and refused to speculate on the outcome of talks, which he hopes will see the 26-year-old remain at the club.
Details

When asked if he had any updates on the situation, Hodgson told Sky Sports News: ""No, but Christian might be able to if you got hold of him. I haven't spoken to him for the last two days he's been travelling back from Spain where he's been on holiday.

"His holiday has also been taken up a lot of time by discussions with Fernando and his people, so I'm afraid the only person who can give you the type of details you require is Christian.

"It would be wrong of me to say too much."

Hodgson is hoping Torres follows the lead of captain Steven Gerrard, who publicly pledged his commitment to Liverpool after speculation over his future circulated.

Torres was the spearhead of the Reds' attack last season and his departure would land Hodgson a hefty blow as he attempts to reverse the club's decline.

Joe Cole's signing has raised hopes of a revival but Hodgson is waiting on Torres to emulate team-mate Gerrard and voice his desire to remain under his stewardship.

"That's what I'm hoping for, yeah," added Hodgson, referring to a public statement akin to Gerrard's.

Looking forward

"I made it clear from my point of view I'm really looking forward to working with him and I believe he's a key, key figure at the club.

"I obviously want him to be a part of the team we're trying to build here and I can only hope he'll buy into what the club is offering him.

"I don't think there are any worries with him in terms of me personally or what we're doing. I think the concerns go back once again to the time before I came to the club

I know a lot of people will read all sort of things between the lines here, but Gerrard didn't speak publicly about his desicion before he returned from holiday. I don't think Torres will say anything until he has returned either.

Torres' people are probably ringing around and finding out that only Man City can afford him.

Quite.

Inter aren't that rich, Real aren't an option, Barca rightly favoured Villa, and Chelsea and United are cutting back.

If he joins City I'll lose all respect for him. I think he will leave within the next two seasons, but he owes us one injury free year IMO. I also think his transfer value is quite low right now after a few injury plagued seasons and a poor WC.

Holding onto him this summer is crucial and shouldn't be too difficult.

City are the only viable option disregarding an opening of the cheque book from Roman, but from what im aware Chelsea are chilling out on the mental spending.

He won't move to City though, not in a million years. The sooner Chelski signs a striker the sooner the media will stop their ridiculous stories. Didn't Ancelotti state last week that Torres wasn't an option?

Either way, he owes us another season. If he leaves now, I'll lose all my respect for him.

Thee are only one or two clubs that can actually afford him, City being one of them. If he ever considered going there, then all respect for him will be gone. For that reason alone, I dont think he will. Chelsea is a worry, but haven't they planned to be able to function without Romans' extra money as of 2012? He might actually have to stay even if he doesnt particularly want to.

ROY HODGSON admits he is powerless to keep Fernando Torres at Liverpool.

And the new Anfield manager's shock confession will open the door for Chelsea to launch an official bid for Spain's £60million-rated World Cup winner.

"Unfortunately, I cannot do much more," admitted Hodgson. "His beef is with the club and not me."

The 26-year-old striker believes he has been let down by broken promises regarding investment in new players, a factor that was key in him signing a new deal last year.

Hodgson added: "Fernando's situation has nothing to do with me, he made that perfectly clear over the phone during the World Cup and when I met him face-to-face.

"He knows what I would like to do with the club. He knows how much I value him.

"But his issues are with what has gone on in the past rather than the future. If he has problems with the club for things in the past, it is difficult for me to dismiss that."

Hodgson had been celebrating a double success after signing England star Joe Cole and convincing Kop skipper Steven Gerrard to stay at Anfield.

But his admission after Saturday night's 1-0 friendly defeat against Kaiserslautern in Germany is seen as the biggest indicator yet that Torres is still considering leaving Liverpool.

Anfield managing director Christian Purslow has had several talks with Torres, including a meeting in Majorca last week. Liverpool insist they are close to securing new financial backing.

The club's American co-owner Tom Hicks is understood to have been in London last week for a series of meetings with potential investors.

Torres demanded new signings in March and stressed: "What is important is the club makes a big effort and brings great players that are above the quality of the squad.

"We need four or five of the highest level to compete. Without strengthening, what's the point of fighting again next season just to be in the top four."

To compound Hodgson's problems, 26-year -old Argentinian midfielder Javier Mascherano will return to Liverpool this week and demand a transfer to Inter Milan.

Chelsea are favourites to land Torres, but it will take a bid of around £60m to bring Liverpool to the negotiating table.

"People forget he is a Liverpool player," added Hodgson. "One year ago he signed a four-year contract. I hope he will commit himself by honouring his contract."

Chelsea have just spent 43M on two players, I doubt they have any more for Torres. Citeh would buy him in an instant if he were made available ... but not in a million Sundays can I see Nando wanting to move down the road. Off to Barca next season methinks (bar a sugar daddy with deep deep pockets arriving in the meantime).

Maybe he's directing the "beef" away from himself if he is sold.

Ramires, Yossi, some Serbian youngster. Thats about £30M max surely?
Have they?

So maybe he's right, and *was* promised certain things would happen hence he signed a new contract. Then they didn't happen, and it's Fernando that's a bitch/cunt, etc

Chelsea have upped the ante in their summer transfer battle with Man City with a £27m bid for Benfica's David Luiz as Ramires says 'Yes'. Chelsea have firmed up their interest after losing Luiz's countryman Alex to a torn thigh muscle which will rule him out for a month. In addition, if Chelsea are successful in pulling off a deal for Ruiz, who like Ramires has attracted the interest of top clubs across Europe, then it may signal the end of Ricardo Carvalho's stay at Stamford Bridge.

Ricardo Carvalho's Stamford Bridge days are numbered but Carvalho's former manager, Jose Mourinho, is understood to be keen for a reunion at Real Madrid. However, Rafa Benitez is eager to have the benefit of Carvalho's experience at Inter Milan as he tries to emulate Mourinho's treble winning exploits at the San Siro.

There could be a decidedly samba rhythm to Chelsea's play next season if they are also successful with a £17m move for Santos's 18-year-old striker Neymar.

I heard that comment on BBC Radio 5 Live news as I woke up this morning.

So Torres has a "beef."

Whether or not the "beef" is justified, we want a striker who is proud to wear the shirt. I am coming round to the view that the club ought to cash in now.

Roy has used the word 'club' when the correct word is 'board'. Torres hasn't got a beef with the club, how could he?

'What's the point of fighting just to be in the top four?' is a bit of a spoilt-brat comment.

I sympathise a bit if he feels he's been lied to, but hey, WE'VE all been lied to as well. How about showing some loyalty and fight for US, Fernando?

I kinda understand Torres. I mean he's been here for three years and won absolutely nothing. He didn't win anything with Madrid either. There has been promises of investment since he joined but it turned out to be lies.
He's now in a point in his career where he feels that he has to be in a team that has the capacity to win titles.
Sure we can argue that he's been injured alot but there's no excuse to why we never have a striker that's good enough to replace him. We would have won the title two years ago if we had a better squad.

I won't hold it against him if he leaves. He has absolutely no obligation to stay, well except for his contract.
I genuinely think he wants the best for this club and is using his importance to influence the board, but to no avail it seems.

I wish Old Uncle Roy would keep his trap shut more often

'Beef with the club, not me'

Weally? So you haven't managed to outline your gleaming plans to him, or your other top player who won't return your calls
Oh well. Maybe Purssssslow did it for you.

Farkmaster said it ages ago and I agreed with him then, but it's more and more obvious now. Every interview, every quote, every gesture was simply a part of a well managed PR campaign.

He is no different from the rest.

Am I the only one that thought the journo may have just slung that in for effect?

I read that and thought it sounded made up tbh

agreed... if he didnt mention the issue with getting into contact with Mascherano and that Torres has issues with the club it would remain simple speculation.

I was told last season that Torres was seriously pissed off with the club over the way they handled his injury. He wanted the operation earlier than happened, the club wanted to wait. So, that might be his beef although could be something else.
