Roma vs Liverpool Match Thread CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL 2nd Leg

Well that's something at least.

Although the fact what we did have never been done before or since in the biggest final in club football makes it something people will romantise forever and rightly so imo.

We don't do it claiming we were the greatest.

We are all well aware of that teams shortcomings which made the triumph all the more amazing.

I don't think it's quite fair to sell that team so short, it was in the CL because we qualified for it, we didn't win a fucking raffle.

And while we can all laugh in horror at the fact that Djimi fucking Traore played in it, and our top scorer that season was Milan Baros with about 10 goals, any side that has the likes of Finnan, Gerrard, Alonso, Garcia, Hyypia, Hamann, Carragher and Riise in it, is hardly a bunch of mugs.

You have people like Dreamy absolutely outraged that I don't share his opinion about games, and feel entitled to spout insults as a consequence. That's the only intolerance on show here. People appalled that someone actually personally doesn't think certain performances were good or great. Who the hell cares? I love every victory, but I don't love every performance, and I don't feel obliged to conflate the latter with the former. Deal with it, ignore it, I really could not give a damn.
Alright pal. I think youre mistaken. Thats not why dreamy or anyone is outraged.
But its chip papers tomorrow.

Easy now.

I tend to agree with you. It was a fantastic win on the night and fueled our international support for subsequent seasons. But for me, the downside was that the kudos made Benitez untouchable, and led to him staying in charge for a few years during which, in my opinion, the club went backwards.

Yep getting to the final in 07 after winning the fa Cup in 06, getting to the semis in 08 and coming 2nd in the league in 09 and running Utd close had nothing to do with Rafa lasting as long as he did, because you know Istanbul.

Fuck me.

It honestly sounds like something you would read redcafe, bitter jealous fans complaining about how everyone goes on about the flukey bin dippers from 05.

I'm still shocked, at least Macca has acknowledged he's happy we won just doesn't like celebrating it.

Mind you he didn't say that last night.

Exterminated or something was what he said.

Fuck me.

Didn't we agree to ignore each other? If you can't do that, at least act like a grown up.

Not in this case or least not anywhere near the level you seem to be.

Fatigue was the mean reason and lack of attacking substitutes capable of replacing what we had on the pitch,

The common denominator in those three games was going with 3 central defenders and fucking up the rhythm of the defence, to a degree that they looked even more confused than normal. Using fatigue as an excuse is just an easy kopout.

But it's ok to fire insults if someone things a signing is a bit 'meh'?

Hypocrite much?

You didn't say 'I thought 05 was lucky'

You went to town on the whole thing.

But fair enough I won't respond anymore as you say it's your opinion.

I (along with everyone else on here) are stunned at your original comments and subsiquent defence on them but ya whatevs.

Let's win no6 and have this argument in 2031 when fans are still back slapping about 18 and flukey win over Madrid.

"This team is a thousand times better than that bunch of fools who won in 2005 and ludicrously keep getting eulogised for fluking a win"

"They were shameful. I want them exorcised"

"They didn't (deserve to win) they were shite"

"They were shite. Dream on if you think otherwise. This team can play football. I'm not a Newcastle supporter. I want us to win in style. I saw us do it three and a bit times before"

"I want to exorcise 05, when we acted (and thanks acting like local planks like Dave Kirby, still keep acting) like Leicester"

The absolute fucking state of this.

We've done it in other games and not conceded, you must have forgotten those.

While I suppose I should be flattered that my opinions seem to have such incredible importance for certain other people, I just find it bemusing. I can't really see why people don't go back to celebrating what they want to celebrate. Do they REALLY find that so hard because they're aware that I don't agree about certain things? Maybe the semi-repressed frustration and disappointment about last night is now showing itself in this displaced way. Maybe people are just looking for an argument. I'm ignoring this now for your mental health, because it looks as though that's the only way to calm you down.

Fuck me.

We've just become the first side to score against Roma in their own ground for a season, & won the Semi-Final over the two legs, in order to reach our eighth European Cup Final.

We're two points from securing top-four finish again. We have the best counter-attacking forwards, maybe entire side, in the world & are doing it playing the most wonderfully entertaining football I have ever seen in my lifetime. We have a forward scoring more goals in a season than any other ever has for us in modern history. We are the only one of 92 league sides to still have an unbeaten home record this season. Our fans are starting to take three & four nil drubbings of teams for granted cos we do it so damn often.

Did I mention we just made it to the CL Final?!

Not only is football fun again, we're fucking winning games playing that fun football.

And I come on here & people are arguing. Fucking hell.

Ha ha, denial and deflection is a powerful tool.

For the record I have zero disappointment today.

We are in the CL final.

Fuck ya.

But anyway I'll let you have the last word if you so wish to reply.

I don't think I could be arsed getting riled about the nature of any of our wins. We got battered by Arsenal in 2001 but it will forever be remembered for a couple of minutes of brilliance from Michael Owen.

We won the UEFA Cup the same year against one of the worst teams to make the final, with one of the most inept defensive displays in UEFA Cup final history, yet it goes down as one of the greatest finals ever, won by an own goal to boot.

We continued that in 2005, going into it as a transitional team, an underdog as a result, beating some great teams to get there. We didnt turn up in the first half, got battered and feared the worst, yet were dragged out the doldrums by a resounding fan support, produced 6 minutes of brilliance and the rest is historically one of the great stories of European Football.

Why would any Liverpool fan be ashamed of that? I'm not quite sure why someone is so embittered about Klopp criticism, that they would go to such extreme lengths to condemn other wins. If Klopp loses the final, I wonder if the irony will be lost on that peculiar stance?

What a post that is

Yep.. we played well in the 2007 final.. and lost.. no one remembers the dodgy FK they got leading up to their first goal.

I couldn't care less if we won the CL with 2 dodgy penalties (where Salah dived and for the rest of his career was known as a diver), or Real had 3 undeserved red cards. As long as we win. Finals are for winning, by hook or crook, they are not for playing well and then losing.

Riise is sitting here next to us awaiting the slightly delayed flight back to Norway. While he and Finnan was solid fullbacks I am somewhat surprised they are CL winning material.

Applause

I kept trying to come in to this thread and my iPhone kept closing Tapatalk, I tried about 4 times and I eventually gave up, to only come back an hour later. Maybe it was trying to tell me something

This website, you know the one we all post on, was named after those six embarrassing flukey minutes in Istanbul. Can we change the name please? I'm ashamed to post on here.

Perhaps Macca has more of a ax to grind with Dave Kirby and the others who profited from that win in 05 than we think and that is fueling his anger towards that win?
