Rodgers in Rome, Pjanic Buying ???

What's this Danilo chap like that we're apparently scouting?

One of the rare clips you can find on him. He's an 18-year-old DM for Braga; arrived in the summer, started 15 of their games so far in midfield (youngest chap in that group). Didn't really look that special in that clip to me, but he's only 18, and of course, it's just one game.

We play with 2 CMs not 3.

I don't agree. We've really been playing 5-3-2 (or 5-3-1-1) rather than 3-4-3 over the last 2 months.

Lallana has been the sole AM and Sterling the lone striker, and Coutinho has really been the third (and most advanced) CM or No. 8. His starting position has invariably been just ahead of the half-way line rather than in the final third.

Even last season, there were times when in the 4-3-3, Coutinho was in the midfield three rather than the front three.

One of the reasons why Rodgers is maybe targeting someone like Pjanic is to give Coutinho competition in that role. In Coutinho's and Gerrard's absence, our midfield would be quite devoid of invention.

Our scouting department have, at least if you read anything into todays newspaper stories, scouted Nainggolan and Diao (Lazio).

Liverpool are lining up a Serie A triple swoop in the summer.

Brendan Rodgers trip to Rome has seen the Reds linked with Miralem Pjanic.

But it seems the Northern Irishman also wants Pjanic's Roma teammate Radja Nainggolan and Lazio forward Keita Balde Diao.

Both Pjanic and Diao are expected to cost in excess of £25m while Nainggolan has a £25.9m release clause.

We do not play 5-3-2.
5-3-2 or 3-5-2, depending on how offensive the wing-backs are. What I'm disputing is the three in attack. It isn't.

Our game has changed to more bodies in midfield and less in the final third. It's why we've become more solid defensively as well.

I think the system is definitely 3-4-3, but Coutinho often picks up the ball deeper, which is what dmishra is referring to. But that alone doesn't make it 3-5-2, just like when Sturridge drops deeper to pick up the ball doesn't mean we play a system with no strikers.

It's been like this:

---------Can-------Skrtel-----Sakho
Markovic---Henderson---Lucas----Moreno
--------------------------Coutinho
--------------Lallana
------------------------Sterling

There's some fluidity to that of course, and you can call it a 3-4-3 if you want. When the full-backs are attacking, it starts looking like a 3-2-3-2 or a 3-4-3. While defending, I think it definitely does into a 5-3-2. It's not just him dropping deep. He's often taking up defensive positions.

The larger point is that I see Coutinho as a 3rd CM rather than as an AM long term.

Serie A players give me the creeps. They generally fail In the epl.

More importantly we need to stop buying quantity and re-building the squad. This year we need to do a Chelsea and but two world class players with the majority of our cash. Cm to replace Gerard and a striker. Ideally in the bundesliga.

I can agree with that. I think that's how Rodgers sees it too.

I agree he looks raw, but you can see from other clips out there the kind of potential he has. He's an absolute physical powerhouse: the idea of being able to pair him and Can in central midfield a couple of years down the line is truly exciting. Two real all-rounders, tall, fast, really strong, technically gifted, both offering a goal threat.

It'd be like having a three man midfield with two players.

Back on a better day. He had a lot of space to play in the two good clips. So the obvious question is: is he as good in tight situations, like in the case versus Lazio in the "bad day" clip?

Coutinho was alright.

I worry about Coutinho in a central midfield position.

I don't think he offers enough on the defensive side of the game at this point in time - playing him there in the current setup would be asking for trouble.

Now there's news stories that we are willing to pay a club record £37m for him. Why is it a rush to tie up summer signings now?
