My main issue with it is that *most* people at some stage were in their *right mind* and then became depressed for some reason or another. But its like you forget what the effect of taking your own life will have on others around you. You may feel its the only way out or that people may be better off without you, but I can't see how anybody could suddenly forget or put less importance on the fact that suicide destroys the lives of those left behind and some never get over it.

God forbid I'm ever faced with such horrible things in my life but if I was I don't think I would lose sight of the fact that taking my own life would only add to the misery of others.

Just because it is more widely known these days doesn't mean that it is any more understood or accepted, couple that with the huge social stigma that surrounds mental illness in it's many forms and I can certainly agree with the comment that society doesn't 'get' it.

Have 6 weeks off work because you broke a leg and the world is a caring and understanding place.
Have the same six weeks off because you are in a depression so deep and black that leaving your bedroom fills you with complete anguish and you are told to 'harden the fuck up' and looked upon like a malingerer and a drain on society. We may not institutionalise our patients very often these days, but the attitudes have not changed much at all.

I've dealt with countless depressed patients and their perception of reality is a very different thing to one that you or I see. Stand on the edge of a cliff and think about how hard it would be to throw yourself off, then think about how bad a place you would have to be in to actually do it.

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end.

He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there.

Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable.

When she went to tell Edna the news she said, 'Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged,since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love... I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness.

The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry.'

Edna replied, 'He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry ... how soon can I go home?'


You can do your bit by remembering to send an email to an unstable friend ... I've done my part!

Unfortunately it is my experience that the majority of people will not change their opinions on mental illness, unless they themselves or a loved one experiences it.
We are a tangible society for the most part, and so things we can't see or touch or easily categorise into neat little pigeon holes are ridiculed and subjected to conjecture. Mental illness is to be no more to be ashamed of than cancer, yet we are a very long way from ever being in that position.
