Fuck. RIP, his poor wife after the loss of their daughter too.

Germany and Hannover 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke, 32, has died after being hit by a train, police have confirmed.

The German football federation (DFB) said in a statement: "The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock.

"National team coach Joachim Loew and manager Oliver Bierhoff said: 'We are all shocked, we are speechless'."

Enke played eight times for Germany and also for clubs Benfica, Barcelona and Borussia Moenchengladbach.

He made his international debut aged 31 and became Germany's number one keeper after Jens Lehmann retired from internationals at the end of Euro 2008.

Enke had missed Germany's last four matches with a virus but returned for his club at the weekend.

Loew had indicated that Enke was in pole position for the number one jersey at next year's World Cup finals in South Africa.

Enke's daughter Lara died in 2006 of a rare heart condition when she was just two. He leaves behind his wife, Teresa, and an eight-month-old daughter the couple had adopted earlier this year.

Dr Theo Zwanziger, president of the DFB, said that the football community in Germany "are deeply distressed and in mourning".

He added: "All our sympathy goes to the wife of Robert Enke and his family."

Puts the news of Dean Ashton into perspective.

Germany keeper dies in accident

I remember when he was linked to Utd when Barthez was there. I feel sorry for his wife and child.

Dear God. This certainly puts a lot of other things into perspective.

RIP Robert and Lara Enke. Thoughts and prayers for the surviving members of the family.

RIP.

Pretty tough time for his wife in what must already have been a really tough few years.

Rumours are suicide

Unsuprising, it's rare to hear of accidental death by train.

All the same, i only hope his wife can deal with all this sorrow she's had so far. RIP

Germany and Hannover goalkeeper Robert Enke has died at the age of 32.

Hannover 96 president Martin Kind announced the death of the former Barcelona stopper on Tuesday afternoon, according to the agency dpa.

Kind said, "It is a tragedy. You expect many things, but not something like that.

"I do not know how and why it happened, but I do not think that it had anything to do with football."

Nothing has yet been officially confirmed about the cause of death, but according to German source Morgenpost Online, early signs point towards suicide.

The website quotes a spokesperson from the Hannover police as saying, "Enke has thrown himself under a train at Neustadt am Rübenberge."

The incident is said to have taken place in the small town of Neustadt at around 18:25 local time.

Unhappy

Enke is survived by his wife, Teresa. The couple had a daughter, Lara, who died at the age of two in 2007. Recently they had adopted a new baby girl.

It has been hinted at by Hannover officials, and stated explicitly by the German press, that Enke never truly recovered from the death of his daughter, and that personal pressures such as these were the cause of his suicide.

Bild journalist Wolf Bruer explained to Sky Sports, "It seems to be deliberate suicide. He has apparently driven his car this evening to a train crossing station (level crossing), waited for the train, and the train hit him.

"The president of Hannover confirmed indeed that it's a very sad news. He also said, very importantly, that he confirmed Robert Enke had been a very unstable person."

RIP. Terrible and shocking news. But surely leaving his car on the level crossing is an irresponsible way of doing it and could have derailed the train and killed everyone on board?

What Dean Ashton news by the way?

He'll prob never play again. Same injury that he got on international duty a few years ago.

He didn't drive the car onto the level crossing, mate - he drove to the level crossing, got out and walked onto the tracks.

RIP.

I personally don't know how anyone could ever get over losing a child like that; I guess not in any way but to have a little girl die before you while you did everything in the world to save her would be crushing.

It's tragic that, however great the hell he was going through himself, he didn't stop to realise that his action was destined to put his wife through something even worse. But I guess he'd lost the ability to think clearly.

Too true. But I guess that goes with almost each and every suicide case. Tragic.
