Riise eyes Liverpool return

Riise denies Liverpool link

Norwegian defender John Arne Riise has denied that he wants to leave Roma and return to Liverpool.

The former Reds left-back moved to Italy in June 2008 after a seven-year spell on Merseyside, and was reported to be hankering for the chance to come back to the club by a Sunday newspaper.

However, the Norway international has refuted the claim and said he is more than happy with the Giallorossi.

"I never said I want to return to Liverpool nor in England and I have never issued those statements," he said.

"I'm happy here and I want to stay at Roma."

The Italian outfit have made a poor start to the Serie A campaign and have only managed 14 points from 11 games so far.

Riise will be playing against his brother Bjorn Helge when Fulham travel to the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday in the Europa League

Didn't want to start a new thread as I probably would've posted the same name or something similar.

RIISE WON'T RULE OUT RETURN

Italian Serie A. Click here to bet.
Former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise has refused to rule out a return to Anfield.

The Norwegian will enter the final year of his contract at Roma in June and the Italian club could listen to offers as a consequence.

Reports have suggested Kenny Dalglish could look to sign Riise, who departed Liverpool when Rafa Benitez was manager in 2008.

The position is a problem for the Merseysiders, with England right-back Glen Johnson currently acting as cover, and they have been linked with an audacious move for Everton's Leighton Baines.

Champions League winner Riise, at 30, may seem a less likely candidate, but he said: "I am flattered by reports linking me with a return to England.

"Liverpool are close to my heart. They are a great club and I have some good memories. I have a contract here until June 2012, so you never know."

Marseille are also said to be tracking Riise, who played for Monaco before joining Liverpool in 2002, as a replacement for reported AC Milan target Taye Taiwo.

Riise said: "I love France as well. I played in Monaco and also enjoyed my time there."

He lost me when he was the cause of our exit at the last Semi Final Cl game vs chelsea t the Bridge... where he was so easily out run.

It's original, I'll give you that.

There's a few geniuses on here who've hated him since he traitorously scored THE own goal.

Fact is, he's probably the best LB we've had in 20 years.

Probably past it now of course.

Avvy, loved the guy, but what I meant was he was outpaced and outclassed in the second leg. Not talking about the own goal - that was misfortune and nothing else. I remember him being turned inside out, in a way that looked like he was either not arsed, or outpaced. I thought given his own goal at Anfield, he'd be trying a little harder. Anyway, no going back please.

Ive only seen him play for Roma once vs Shakthar and Douglas Costa gave him a terrible time in that game.

Carra was better. We'd not have won the Treble with Johnny Rockets at LB.

But I agree that hating him for a mistake (however disastrous), about he was more devastated than anybody, was always daft.

Never hated him for the og, but I will admit to not being quite as enamored as some about a player who was so insanely one-footed that he'd rather try a diving header from 6 yards whilst sprinting at top speed directly towards his own goal than to simply swing his right foot at it and stick it into the Centenary Stand.

Very decent for us for a long time, but it was time to go at the end, and we don't need to be revisiting that again now.

if he wasnt getting on id have him back in a heartbeat
to be honest though my opinion of him is probably a bit clouded by memories of him twattin balls with the power of grayskull

Every word of this.

Yep spot on the own goal summed up why it was right to replace him the fact we replaced him with shite is a different story.

I can't understand why anyone would allow one mistake to tarnish their memories of what was otherwise an excellent player for us.

"I never felt the same about him after that".... Jesus.

Did everyone miss Carra and Gerrard's own goals. Passing it to the opposition infront of goal our own is just as idiotic, but it happens.

Mark, whilst I agree with you re that quote, nothing will ever deter me from thinking that swinging his left foot at that ball wasn't the most ridiculous bit of one-footedness I've ever seen.

He may as well of swung his cock at the fucking thing.

He's not Igor Biscan yer know!

Selling Riise for £4M and buying Dossena for £7M was criminal from Rafa.
One of our most consistent players of the last decade.
One footed maybe but what a left foot!

He might be joining Marseille I hear

I'll always blame Yossi and Arbeloa for fucking allowing the cross in the first place.

RIISE TIL I DIE GOD DAMN IT !!!

Riise was one of those totemic players - what he added to the team was more than just the sum of the parts. His defending was always clumsy but we loved his raids forward. However in his last season with us he was poor. His defending didn't get any better, but he didn't score a single goal. I think £4M was a good deal.

It wasn't a player exchange though. We sold Riise to Roma (good idea) and bought Dossena from Udinese (bad idea). The two deals are separate issues.

Riise was an absolute liability at the end, his confidence was shot, he almost single handedly got us booted out of the champs league as well. His raids down the left were a nice novelty but they had definitely faded by the end of his stay with us, a good lad but.... we needed better.... Dossena obvioulsy wasnt it however!

He was in a financial mess wasn't he as well? Between the own goal and the game at Stamford Bridge, he single handedly helped Chelsea win that match. But it shouldn't take away from all the good he did as well over a long career with us. Sadly, what I remember is his contributions on that night, alongside his goals against Man U

I prefer to remember the 31 odd goals he scored at the right end

You're right Avvy. I need to get my head together on this one.

It wasn't even so much that he scored a SHITE own goal in a crucial game it was that the team was on aroll at that moment and he basically signalled the end of it all, whats more his confidence and his performances had been so bad before then that i definitely felt a sense of doom as he came on the pitch, there was a palpable sense of trepidation that his substitution into such a tense tight game, i wasn't the only one to feel that way either. Riise's decline was a slow and painful one and it is a shame that such a good chap should be remembered for such a sad denouement, interesting that you should mention his gambling debts... i'd never thought of that before as a possible reason.... he was fucking atrocious at the end.

I choose to remember him for nearly getting my head kicked in on the clock end at highbury when he equalised .... good goal too... lovely move...

Well, he found his old level at Roma and has been one of their best players for the last two years.

I think we should look elsewhere. I havent got anything against him, I just think we're better off getting someone younger and more hungry for success.
