I'm fine with him being off the pace, needing game time, looking a little out of touch.
I'm not fine with his fucking bullshit effort, like the one he (didnt) put in on Saturday. S'far as I'm concerned, he barely even tried at the weekend, and for someone who struggles to get into our best 11 at the best of times, that's hardly acceptable.
He came back from the Confederations Cup with ideas way above his station in my opinion. You're not a Torres, a Reina, a Gerrard, or a Mascherano Albert. So swanning around the park with the swagger of one is pretty ill-becoming.

Sorry Vlad, you've lost me.

Well, if he came back from the confederations cup with ideas above his station, that says to me he was confident, perhaps even over confident, and there is absolutely no harm in that at all for a player.
Perhaps Rafa saw it the way you seem to have too and decided to slap him down a bit and not include him in the squad for the opening game.... that will show him who's boss. It will fuck up his confidence , but he will know who is boss and that he is not a Torres, a Reina, a Gerrard, or a Mascherano...or indeed a Lucas or a Dirk

PS Thank you Farky, indeed

Missed this post earlier.
You're making assumptions Vlad. His form at the Confed Cup wasn't that fucking flash, which I've really no problem with. His form in the pre-season games for us was brutal though, and (in my opinion) was related to a bit of a swagger he'd gained from being away with the bigger names. You can carry that off if you're gonna perform on the park, but he was coming into the new season with us wildly off form. Babel, by conicidence, had done ok in pre-season, and Rafa chose him for Spurs. Again, fine. I'm not a huge fan of either as you know, (I will admit Riera's the better option of course) but if Riera was off the boil, getting ideas above his station, and at the time Babel was showing some encouraging signs then I've no issues with that team selection.
Of course Riera went on to play a few games after that, and was fucking rubbish, before getting injured for a lengthy spell. Hardly Rafa's fault.
I think you're over-exaggerating Rafa's treatment of him. Besides, even if he were trying to bring him down a peg or two, it's hardly a revolutionary tactic or a stick to beat him with, given that such 'laying down of the law' is what Managers like Ferguson, Wenger and Mourinho their names.
Joe Cole
Beckham
Ian Wright
Vieira
Ince
Stam
Scholes
Terry
Every one of them have received similar treatment from their managers for getting too big for their boots. Rafa's, Albert's, and our problem is that unfortunately Riera doesn't have a fucking ounce of the ability of one of the afore-mentioned.
Some people take such treatment and better themselves, like the above. Others fucking swan around Ewood Park on their return like their Johann fucking Cruyff. Luckily for us though, we've got a manager to blame for that.

I am not making any assumptions Ryan.
The only assumption in this is "He came back from the Confederations Cup with ideas way above his station "
All I was saying was ifRafa saw it the way you did perhapshe decided to give him a slap. Which unless I have read this completely wrong was your spin too.
I am merely pointing out that , in my opinion, players like Riera should be built up and not knocked down.
As regards form in pre season, I seem to recall most players being shite, particularly those who returned from the confederations cup, and in fact those players pretty protected. I have just checked and he does not feature on the starting line up of any.
In my opinion Riera has been harshly treated after an excellent start to last season that did tail off, but as everyone else can see his worth is that he does give some balance to the team, which helps others play more consistently.
I am not saying he is a world beater, but he is our best option and I don't think he has been handled well this season
