Liverpool have signed Franck Ribéry from Bayern Munich on a six-year deal for a fee believed to be £38.7m.
The Frenchman, also pursued by Real Madrid and Barcelona, made a name for himself at Marseille before moving to Bayern Munich for €25 million in 2007.
"Franck has the qualities we were looking for. He's a left footer who normally plays on the left wing," said Reds boss Benitez.
"He's good in the air, strong, powerful and a good crosser of the ball.
"He's the kind of player we have been talking about. He can beat players and get good deliveries into the area for our strikers, and most importantly, can score goals too.
Benitez added: "He also had offers from other English clubs but he said no to them because he wanted to come and play for us.
"That means a lot to me because it shows the commitment he has to play for Liverpool."
Ribéry becomes the second player to join Liverpool this summer following Glen Johnsons £17million transfer last month.
In may in a podcast for the Guardian German journalist Raphael Honigstein said that Ribery would play next season for a team in red in the north west of England if I remember correctly.
At the time I assumed Scum and haven't given it a moments thought since, but now . . . and Honigstein isn't a wind up, he knows the german football scene inside out.
