Ecclestone scores a fine goal. 1-0.

Got high hopes for Ecclestone.. i think he could break through =]

I agree, he's fast, clever and cocky.

(By the way, Spearing just gave away a silly free kick just outside our area... Degen has been getting forward but he plays like a schoolboy at times. Our keeper looks about 10.)

Kyrgiakos has started pretty much as expected. Very dominant in the air. Pacheco and Ecclestone are linking up quite well. McMahon must scare the shite out of the players - I think the improved discipline is showing already. Even Plessis is busy.

1-1. Defence backed off and invited the shot. Spearing is playing well but he keeps delaying his final ball.

Pacheco just oozes class. Little tricks and clever moves, and he's making better decisions as well. (Degen, on the other hand, is now strolling around or standing still when he hasn't got the ball.)

Half time, 1-1. We look much the better side. Pacheco, Spearing, Bruna and Ecclestone have all been lively. Kyrgiakos is coming off at half time as pre-arranged: a very quiet debut - a couple of good defensive headers, one Sami-like punt out of play, that's about it.

Ecclestone looks like he may realize his potential after all. He was on his way out of the club at one stage wasn't he? Could turn out to be a gem, nice to see McMahon giving him a chance.

Pacheco also looks great this year.

N'Gog's first touch has been really good, pity about his second

Hopefully Eccleston could get a sub apperance in the league if he continues to impress for the reserves. He has the pace and the attitude to take the step up.

2-2. Ayala own goal. Weird because we've been so much better than Blackburn, we should have 4 or 5 by now.

I am trying not to get excited about any of these kids ... I just cannot see Rafa even given them 'sub time' unless it's an emergency (ie Ayala vs Spurs & Stoke) ...

Wash gets way more playing time than I'd like, as it is.

A good performance though overall. Ecclestone is a fast and confident player - a bit greedy, too, which isn't such a bad thing - and he ought to be on the bench for the odd game.

Was Zorba any good?

Meh, won a few headers, didn't do anything of note. Mark Wright claimed he looked rusty.

He's the one 'youngster' who gives me hope that Rafa will give our youngsters a chance down the line ... He's good enough to be a very good player for us in the long haul. Have faith ... Not every striker starts off like Robbie or Owen.

No, most strikers start off nothing like Robbie or Owen - and end up nothing like Robbie or Owen. I don't see anything in Wash's game at all tbh: not enough pace, not enough power, not enough composure or control or vision or precision. What, other than blind hope, makes you think he'll make it at Liverpool?
