Macca, as one of those who have praised the guy I hadn't noticed any adulation of him TBH. On the contrary, those of us who have ventured a higher rating than yours have qualified it by acknowledging that he went noticeably downhill later on. I'd respectfully suggest, though, that the real revisionism here consists of forgetting how good he actually was when he first arrived. Fortunately for us fitful signs of that talent were still there in Istanbul - with Reina in goal we'd have lost, because he wouldn't have pulled off *that* save from Shevchenko.

I think it was the context of the double save that was extraordinary rather than the double save itself. Goalkeepers do that shit all the time throughout the season - rubbish ones too. When you're getting hammered 4-0, not so memorable, when you win the CL in exceptional circumstances, a little more so.

Oh yes, I accept that, but I still find it laughable he's in the same thread as mentions of Clemence, unless it's a thread of vivid contrasts in ability. Dudek always looked to me as though he had a bad mistake in him just waiting to get out. IMHO Reina at his best was much better. As was Grobbelaar.
