Barcelona are set to launch a bid for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, after their contract talks with Victor Valdes broke down.

Reports in Spain suggest the newly crowned European Champions will step up their raid on Anfield, having been linked with Javier Mascherano last week, with a £17 million bid.

Sources close to the Catalan giants believe they could sign the former Real Madrid player if he requests a move. Spanish publication El Mundo Deportivo indicate Reina may favour a return to La Liga after four years at Anfield, although Rafa Benitez is extremely unlikely to sell the player.

The current incumbent of Barcelona’s number one jersey Valdes, reportedly demanded wage parity with Xavi Hernandez and a deal worth £150,000 a week, however the Nou Camp’s money men are unwilling to budge on their initial offer of £100,000 a week.

Valdes has since been linked with Manchester United, and with a over a year left to run on his current deal, the Spanish Treble winners may look to cash in on the 27 year old.

What a load of bollocks.

Pepe is one of the finest keepers in the world and is on track to break many records at LFC - replacing him would be far from straight-forward.

Yeah, he was at Barcelona.

I don't think this link's anything to be worried about. It's based on fuck-all

Yeah agree with all that..

But surely you'd let him go before Mascherano or Alonso..

Of the three, I'd say Mascherano is the most expendable

But they're all key players and we should be striving to keep players of that calibre at our club.

Yep. Zola is having a positive influence all round at WHU.

Losing Reina would be a disaster. He's a very important part of the team and getting a replacement for a good keeper has proven to be a problem for top teams in the past - both United and Arsenal for example.

Selling him to Barca and then seeing United of all teams buying Barca's current keeper would be adding insult to injury!

I wouldn't. If I HAD to sell one of the three, it'd be Mascherano as he'd fetch the most money and be the easiest (IMO) to replace.

So having possibly had a bid for Mascherano, "sources" unnamed think that if Reina asks for a move they might be able to sign him....

Sounds like the usual silly season journalism with loads of ifs and buts thrown in to me.

Excellent business. Mancini only moved from Roma a few seasons back and Jimenez looks quality of what i've seen of him. Is he the small Chilean?

I wouldn't either, and like you I want all three to stay, but I strongly disagree with your second sentence. From both points of view (money and replaceability) it would have to be Xabi.

Go on then. Who would you replace Xabi with?

Mascher would cost more because he's younger.

But he's also more limited (though that has made him the best around at what he DOES do). Replacing Xabi would be a monster assignment and I don't have an easy answer for your question, but at least there would be a certain number of playmakers out there to look at. How many other out-and-out DMs at all, let alone of the requisite quality, are there apart from Mascher now that Makelele's over the hill?
