Ref points at spot.....BANG!

Alonso weren't bad at them after that. How come Stevie never took that by the way? I've always wondered that.

Ian Rush never took many penalties either. Nor did Roger Hunt

And I think I am right in saying that King Kenny never took a penalty for us?
Rushie only took one I believe. In the Rome shoot out in 84.

I used to say I worried about Gerrard from the spot, but I only remember him missing against Spurs and Marseille (which he scored the rebound from), when else has he missed?
Gerrard missed a pen against West Ham in May. He followed up the rebound though.

Gary Mac was also an amazing penalty taker.

His goal against Barca in the UEFA cup was one of my most nervous moments I think.

Apart from the time when Owen, Fowler and Gerrard missed a few (2002?) how lucky have we been with our penalty takers since way back when?
Neal
Mcdermott
Barnes
Molby
Murphy
Mcallister
Gerrard
Kuyt
there probably isn't more than 5 misses between them in 40 years.
We are the Germany of domestic football.
Ps-I would and probably should include Aldo who was perfect from the spot.....except.......*bows head*

He scored 3 and missed 2 apparently, not counting shoot-outs though (but incidently he definately took another one in the shoot out against Portsmouth in '92. I remember it only just made it over the line!)

Dirk gives the impression of being supremely confident before he takes his spot kicks.

He was great last night.
Agreed, he was ace last night. Loved how he banged home the first one and then when forced to retake, he calmly rolled it over the line.

He had hit another absolutely stink one against Spurs a few weeks earlier..

Carbon copy of the pen that took us to Athens.

Alonso got wiped out as he put the rebound in too. Should have been a red card.
er, he did?

Strangely, everytime Gerrard steps up these days I fear the worst. He's improved greatly over the years, but I've zero confidence in him from the spot.

Le Tissier was indeed amazing at penalties (and in general actually - one of my favourite ever non-Liverpool players). You never hear about that one he missed though do you? Who was it against? I bet it was some really shit keeper like Pavel Srnicek who saved it.
Yep - It was Mark Crossley.

Le Tissier scored some of the greatest goals ive ever seen. Such skill and calmness on the ball, he was a fat genius.

Gerrard has missed 6 penalties for us. Same as Fowler.
I'm sure God missed that penalty at highbury on purpose.

Aldo's penalty miss was on purpose too. At least subconciously it was. 'Cos it was never a penalty.

That's what I've been telling myself for 21 years, anyways...

And Rambo's the only person I've heard of getting a hatrick of penalties in one match. Coventry City, wasn't it?

We must be talking about a different match. 'Cos the Cup Final was never a penalty...

You must have missed the game v West Ham away last year then.

I was there, but I can't remember the incident, only the save, I don't remember it being a controversial decision though.
I do remember a perfectly good goal from Beardsley being disallowed, I also remember Eric Young climbing all over someone (Beardo again I think), when we should have had another pen

regards

No, that was right in front of the North Bank and McAteer bundled in the rebound. That was when we used to beat Arsenal regularly, home and away.

The defender got the ball clean as a whistle, Vlad - It was an awful decision. And that Beardo goal being pulled back was an even worse one... And why, oh why, did Chico decide to knock that plonker on his arse down there near the corner flag..? That was the worst decision of all.

Watch from about 1:30 to about 2:20 in... Aldo says it was a good tackle.

Fixed.

That Wimbledon cup final was probably the first time I realised that things didn't always turn out right. I was 8 years old then and loved the FA cup. Depressing.

Strange. I have no confidence he will score if he has an England shirt on (which means fuck all to me) but for us he has been immaculate for years now. I'd think he has missed one for us in 5 years and he put the rebound away on that one.

As for why Alonso took the penalty he was the designated penalty taker by Rafa for the game. Actually I think Kewell was but he went off and Xabi was next on the list.

I remember hearing at the time something about Benitez selecting the penalty takers before games. There were a few different ones in that first season. Doesn't look like he does that anymore.

I think it was in the Istanbul documentary when Carragher said that Garcia came over asking for the ball so he could take it but Carra just said "no chance". I recall a similar situation once when we got a penalty and Diouf grabbed the ball only for Danny Murphy walk past him and flick it out of his hands!
Molby was the best penalty taker we've ever had and only bettered at all by Matt Le Tissier. Le Tiss scored 48 out of 49 penalties. Awesome record.
And the 1 he missed was the first one he ever took so it was 48 on the bounce.
