Apart from the time when Owen, Fowler and Gerrard missed a few (2002?) how lucky have we been with our penalty takers since way back when?
Neal
Mcdermott
Barnes
Molby
Murphy
Mcallister
Gerrard
Kuyt
there probably isn't more than 5 misses between them in 40 years.
We are the Germany of domestic football.
Ps-I would and probably should include Aldo who was perfect from the spot.....except.......*bows head*

Gerrard used to miss quite regularly Oncy.. But yeah, he's great now and so is Deadly.

I used to say I worried about Gerrard from the spot, but I only remember him missing against Spurs and Marseille (which he scored the rebound from), when else has he missed?

Maybe my memory is shite then, I thought he'd missed more than that.

I shat myself everytime Owen stepped up to take a penalty - his record was atrocious.

Good thing we are already out of every decent competition, because you know this thread is the kiss of death.

I think wee Mikey was the one who missed the penalties

I think he did, I just can't remember who they were against.

Me too, I remember threads discussing whether he should take them anymore, right around when Murphy left... I think it was a short lived issue though.

Gerrard has missed 6 penalties for us. Same as Fowler.

Owen's record is scored 13 missed 10 which is pretty ropey really.

Murphy is I think the only one on that list who never missed one?

The best was Big Jan. He did miss 3 apparently but scored 42! I remember when he used you step up he never looked like he would miss.

Molby was the best penalty taker we've ever had and only bettered at all by Matt Le Tissier. Le Tiss scored 48 out of 49 penalties. Awesome record.

I don't understand how Fowler missed any, given his talent

I'm sure the one he missed against Arsenal (that McAteer put the rebound in) was missed on purpose

I don't think he made a huge effort to score that one against Arsenal put it that way.

Its a fair point that top strikers shouldn't really be missing but there is still an element of luck involved.

Le Tissier was indeed amazing at penalties (and in general actually - one of my favourite ever non-Liverpool players). You never hear about that one he missed though do you? Who was it against? I bet it was some really shit keeper like Pavel Srnicek who saved it.

It's docetism. Sometimes god pretends to be human.

Ive always found it odd that you get top class strikers, Owen being a prime example who just dont have a clue how to take penalties. You would think most strikers would be pushing people out of the way to get a free crack at goal from 12 yards but some just dont seem to fancy it. Ive never seen Torres take one either, is that because Gerrard is our penalty taker or is he another one that just doesnt fancy it.

On the subject, one of the best Ive seen was/is Del Piero, lethal from any sort of dead ball situation

I do remember Gerrard missing a few way back then, but then his composure grew or something (the making of a legend) and began to show himself to be a dependable for the penalty spot.

I think Torres was pretty hit and miss in Spain. But then the same could be said for his finishing then.

He's taken one penalty for us, in that shoot-out against Pompey a couple of pre-seasons ago.

He didn't score.

Dirk gives the impression of being supremely confident before he takes his spot kicks.

He was great last night.

Remember when Kuyt scored two against Everton including one in the last minute after a Neville hand ball from a Lucas shot. Ah good memories.

Ian Rush never took many penalties either. Nor did Roger Hunt

And I think I am right in saying that King Kenny never took a penalty for us?

West Ham last year but he got the rebound

And he missed between 2005 & 2007 but I can't recall the specifics
