Real Madrid (H) Feb 21st [CL]

Wow, that was quite a football lesson from the ruthless Madrid. This had demonstrated that at this level, against this kind of opponent, you can't have any kind of "patched-together" system, with 18-year-old Bajcetic gluing the side together and compensating for everyone else's deficiencies, the attacking trio only starting to find an understanding (compared the telepathic understanding of Vinicius-Benzema-Rodrygo), lack of comparable creative quality to Modric in midfield (this is where we missed Thiago for sure), etc etc. All that said, we're not going to play a team like Real Madrid again this season (except in Madrid, where it will be a formality) – so best to just erase this game from the players' heads and not let it affect our positive momentum, which up to this point I think was genuine and promising. Treat this as useful learning experience for the likes of Bajcetic, Gakpo and Nunez – the rest should just move on and focus on Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Joe Gomez is woeful.
Not out quick enough for 1st goal and turned his back.
Whilst Alisson should have done better for the 2nd goal Gomez shouldn't have played it back ball should have been cleared for a corner
3rd goal stupid free kick to give away
What utter bollocks. Gomez was shite but he did nothing wrong there - Ali had all the time in the world, he dithered, looked up to where he was going to pass it, instead of just shifting it, and allowed Vini Jr to get far too close (and Ali has done that multiple times this season).

The way we look at Porto when we draw them, is the same way Madrid look us under Klopp.

Styles makes fights as they say in boxing.

Our gengen style plays unfavourably with Madrid's technicians. A team that play with 10 men behind the ball and are passive are better suited to get a result against them, than a team that runs at Modric (slowly) and allows him and Benzema to pop the ball around them.

We just have to hope that someone else beats these lot in the CL and we play that other team.

Even Man City, for all their quality, don't have the same level of technicians as Madrid. KDB can be pressed into a couple of mistakes. Modric, invariably, can not be.

Quick ratings. Please note that I don't give artificially low ratings when we lose or high when we win – if you are irked by that, just take every number down 1 point and you'll get what you want.

Alisson 5 – one horrendous mistake at a key moment, not at fault for other goals. But 5 is the maximum rating if you do a "Karius."

Trent 7.5 – our best player on the night, some sublime passing and generally fought well against Vinicius. Proved his world-class quality on the big stage.
Gomez 5.5 – need to rewatch the goals, particularly the deflection, to understand whether he was bad or unlucky. Tried his best, but perhaps this level is a stretch for him.
Van Dijk 6 – marshaled one counter expertly in the 1st half, but they learned from it and made him pay in the 2nd. Still rusty after the injury.
Robertson 6.5 – great goal saving intervention at the end of 1st half, good energy but wish his crosses were better.

Fabinho 6 – some superb plays that made him look like Fabinho of old in the 60 minutes of the game, but left badly exposed in the second half when there was no one to protect space around him. Should have taken a foul to prevent the 5th goal.
Bajcetic 5.5 – did his defensive work, but was understandably nervous playing against Real Madrid and his mistakes in possession were pivotal in this game, unfortunately. He will learn and improve.
Henderson 6.5 – good energy and some decent combination play on the right flank. No problem with this Hendo performance.

Nunez 6.5 – cute finish and good energy throughout, one superb defensive intervention, perhaps unlucky not to get a penalty for that shove and to be subbed.
Gakpo 6 – good when we were on top, but much less noticeable thereafter.
Salah 6.5 – to his credit never stopped running and trying to create, unfortunately most attacks came to naught.

Subs:
Firmino 6 – tried to offer something different by dropping deep
Jota 5.5 – nothing quite happened for him
Milner 6
Matip 6
Elliott n/a

Klopp 5.5 – I don't think Nunez should have been subbed; maybe he was worried about a potential red card? Not sure he had any real options to make us more solid at the back. Defensive set plays still a problem.

Watching our two experienced midfielders so wildly off the pace all game is painful when one of our best (albeit unreliable) is sat on the bench is painful.

Gomez with a strong hand in the first four goals is impressive. Worst performance ever by a defender?

Gakpo & Nunez looked good when taken off and we suddenly had no threat at all to go along with our anonymous midfield and fragile defence.

Crazy game. Hope we use it to respond against Palace and keep the prior positive momentum in the league.

Overall, we weren’t great. But we were unlucky, so the score line was harsh, although we didn’t deserve a win.

I remember that modric twat running rings round us for spurs when they beat us four nil about ten years ago. I was there, it was fucking terrible. Adam and Skrtl got sent off. That's how shit our side was... But modric ran the show and still does. Pity the poor cunt looks like a rat licking piss off a nine volt battery.

Start pre season by showing this second half and just sat that we shall never be this outplayed again.

Ideally by showing it to Bajcetic, Morton and the new midfielders we bring in the replace our old ones who are done & dusted.

Yep. Klopp's subs, bar Matip because Gomez's head had gone, were horrendous today. Gakpo & Nunez were a real threat all game. By all means bring on Firmino or Jota and play them in the centre but our threat totally dissipated when those two came off.

It was an absolute shambles of a preformance... We have no game management. This Madrid side aren't even Thst great but the chances we gave up a 10 y/o would score. Once it went to 2-1 we were terrible, we were lucky to go in at the break 2-2 and we just came out and played the exact same as we ended the first half. For some reason we seem to have an inability to change anything for 2nd half of games while the opposition change things. We have turned frtom being one of the best sides for scoring from and defending from set pieces to now being absolutely useless at them and basically look like conceding at least one a game from them and yey gomez goes and gives away a stupid free from which they score

We were great for about 15 mins. After the second we sat off them and did not press the advantage we had in much the same way we did vs newcastle after the sending off and we allowed them back into the game.

The most noticable thing here was the quaility they had all over thr pitch, and the lack of quaility we have...
We should be think hard about who we sell and who we bring in. Need to invest in real quaility

It's funny, at 2-0 they didn't look remotely worried, just stuck to the task and waited for their chances.

At 2-2 we looked absolutely terrified. Mentality monsters

No that is 100% on alisson. Ya the kid lost the ball easily and maybe gomez could have passed it back with a bit more pace but it's all on Ali because they scored from his fuck up not anyone elses
Well its not all on Ali then is it because we shouldn’t have been in a position where he was in possession of the ball to begin with if we dont cause our own mistakes to begin with. Yes his end mistake led to the goal but its the mistake after mistake after mistake before the final mistake we need to be eradicating. The number of times we pass back to Ali in general is a joke.

The number of times this season we went into the half shit, and come out of it even shittier, is embarassing. No clue what the entire coaching staff is doing.

Just play dead, keep compact and try to hit them on the break. We have Nunez and Salah just for that. What is the point of pressing them when they have Modric? And how on earth is Gomez 3rd choice CB now after a shambles of a season i'll never know.

Not for the first time, or the last time this season, it's almost a waste of time figuring out who is to blame.

In what universe are we "keeping it tight."

Indeed - they honestly did not give a shit we were 2-0 up, they really didn't it was like just a wake up call, and then they started playing ball and running a bit more. The problem is they have young players that could run, and honestly they are all so fucking quick as well, we could not keep the pace with them. This defeat hurts so fucking much its like a fucking nightmare we just went through. CL nights are special, but seriously I am kind of traumatized by this night as a fan, but I can't imagine what those players are feeling right now. Utter humiliation.

How about we for once change the formation rather than just the personnel? We constantly get out muscled in MF with only 3 bodies there. What's Klopp hoping with his 4-3-3 and highline when the MF is shit and defenders like Gomez shit themselves when attackers come face on with him? Real Madrid have a geriatric MF but they run rings round us.

I saw no big number of geriatrics in that team - most of their players are young and willing runners, and they all orbit around the geriatric like the Earth around The Lying Rag.

Gomez - 0

I really don't want to see him anywhere near the first team, or (trying to be as nice as i can), anywhere within a 100km radius from our club please.
