Real in £8m Bid For Alvaro

I've decommissioned the Barry project, so I've got time for a new one.

Honestly though - why should we make Johnson one of the most expensive fullbacks of all time ?

That's not how it works though, is it? The marginal improvement to go from a very good player to a potentially excellent player tends to be disproportionately expensive.

Whilst I agree with what Delinquent posted earlier, it's clear Johnson is only going for so much because:

1) He's English
2) It's an inflated market right now
3) There's other interest from Chelsea and Man City

.. realistically, without the other interest, he'd be worth 8-10m maximum.

We're talking about Glen Johnson though

Be that as it may, he's still a highly rated player and as a big club we'll have to pay a premium and more. His position shouldn't be an issue with regards to the fee, and it's up to Rafa to assess whether his impact on the team is worth the risk and be judged accordingly.

I cant think of any highly regarded first choice international full backs going cheap in recent years.
Cole.
Abidal.
Alves.
Ramos etc

Im not saying Johnson is as good as maybe Alves or whatever, im just saying that you'd struggle to find a cheap first choice international fullback these days.

Darby had his contract extended earlyier in the season and is apparently highly rated. It's the Insua situation, we need to play the lad for him to progress now. I think he should be givenj an opportunity to stake a claim for RB undertsudy. Either that or it's a one year loan, but no-one's yet come back form a loan spell and been given a chance to crack the first team.

We need to decide what we're doing with Degen.

I don't think we should sell Arbeloa, however it depends on whether he's going to sign a new contract or not. I'm all fo0r screwing as much money out of Real Madrid as possible if we have to sell.

The money being mentioned for Johnson is ridiculous. He's worth about 8-10m at best, slightly more than Arbeloa because of his "English" premium.

Stevie, Stevie, Stevie. If you don't think Johnson is better than Arbeloa (who we will get 8 - 10 M for anyway) then you've been smoking too much shit. Of course there is a premium when it comes to English players but we have to up the number of home grown players ASAP and Johnson is a prime example of fulfilling both of our needs, improving the team and English.

We should not think ourselves immune from Real / Barca. If they come knocking then any South American & Spanish players in the EPL are going to want to go there sooner or later.

BTW comments from Portsmouth Chairman Peter Storrie not as widely reported :

When asked if the transfer was between £15million and £18million, Storrie replied: "You may not be a million miles away from the mark." which could easily mean the fee is anywhere from £12million to £15million plus add-ons. There is an alternative though as now there is chatter of a 5M bid for Richards. Either way, and the fact that Arby didn't sign a new contract when everyone was seems to signify he is on his way, we need a damn good replacement.

Froggy,

If want to up the English number, then let's just promote Darby.

In any case is it English players or young players from any nation who have been at the club since an early age (doesn't Insua count?)

Besides, as far as I'm aware there had been no definitive ruling as yet. Do you remember the last time UEFA tried thins "home nations nonsense" and we let Sounness go crazy buying all sort of English c**p.

I don't think Johnson is any better than Arbeloa. In fact, given that he's already failed miserably at a top 4 club I'd question his mentality to succeed.

He's only 18 odd months younger than Arbeloa.

As I said, if he's available at a sub 10m price then, fine. If not he can take the cash at Chelsea or be Spurs annual RB signing.

I'd be willing to bet 17m could buy you one of the best right backs in the world.

surely £17m would get us Maicon or Lahm for the opposite side, I like Johnson but he isnt worth that sort of money

Who Ross?

As for Johnson, paying 15 mill for him is something I can live with, because;
a) He can be our nr 1 right back for 7-8 years, which makes it a good investment
b) The best english right back, young and can only improve.
c) Will improve our attacking play, has an excellent cross and chips in with goals and assists.

Exactamondo.

Summary of this thread;
1. We should ask 10mil for Arbeloa
2. Johnson is not worth more than 9mil

When you consider Johnson is clearly a better player than Arbeloa, how do you reconcile those two statements? He was the best right-back in the Prem last season, how much do you think the best in the League costs? 5mil? No chance.

I don't like the thought of blowing 10+mil on a right back but let's be realistic about it.

Boswinga - 16million.
A. Cole - x amount of money plus William Galas.
Abidal - 10mil +
Alves - 20mil +
Ramos - 20mil +

Unless we re create an Arbeloa esque signing who was a steal at 2.5 million ,we will have to pay out big money on a RB. The above all went for inflated fee's. I don't think Johnsen is worth 16million but it seems that's the going rate for established international full backs these days. If Evra was to be sold in this current market what would he fetch?

Who are the other options for RB bar Johnson anyway?
Regardless of buying Johnson I think Arbeloa should be kept also to provide competition and cover at LB.

Arbeloa tempted by Madrid move
by Toby Davis , 17 June 2009

Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa has revealed he would be tempted by a move back to Spain with The Reds poised to sign Glen Johnson as a potential replacement.

Arbeloa, who is currently on international duty with Spain in the Confederations Cup, has been linked with a move back to former club Real Madrid in a reported £7 million deal.

The defender, who has one year remaining on his current contract, has established himself as Benitez’s first choice right back since signing for the club in 2007 from Deportivo La Coruna.

But the expected arrival of Johnson is likely to push him down the pecking order with Madrid reportedly keen to tempt him back to his homeland.

“I am happy at Liverpool, but I have something to prove in Spain as I did not show my best form in La Liga,†he told Elmundo. “One day, I’m sure I will return.

“It is always nice to be linked to big teams – even to this Madrid side in a time of transition. They are working hard to build a great team. I have one more year remaining on my Liverpool deal, but anything can happen.

“A contract renewal is in the air. I am contracted for one more year, but if Liverpool get an offer they will consider it. It is all in the hands of my agent.â€

Re: Real in £8m Bid For Alvaro

Call me a cynic but it sounds like Arvaro would run through fire to play in this Real Madrid team, however he's trying to keep Liverpool sweet should a bid not materialise.

Can't blame him really

"It is always nice to be linked to big teams – even to this Madrid side in a time of transition."

Not the most fulsome of compliments really, unless it's been mistranslated.

Anything happening with this deal?
It seems to have gone cold.

Re: Real in £8m Bid For Alvaro

I'd still like him to stay and provide cover for LB and RB.

It'd be handy to have the option of Johnson on the right-wing if required, and I'm not convinced by any of our LB's.

ROFL!

According to the People, Rafa wants Negredo to be involved in the Arbeloa deal.¨

I'd be quite happy with that. He could be our back up striker, and do an excellent job.

Re: Real in £8m Bid For Alvaro

Meh, I've never seem him play but he sounds quite promising.

I'd rather Negredo was part of the Arbeloa deal than the Xabi one, though.

We do need another striker.

Seems Spurs are getting Crouchy
How many times will have Redknapp bought him then? 3?

He was already at Saints when Redknapp was there for his short spell, I think.
