hey, I'm not saying don't buy johnson I'm saying we shouldn't sell arbeloa.
we lost points when carra and skrtal moved to right back if we only have one recognised right and he gets inuried or suspened then the center backs will again be asked to play at right back. we need to get the squad to a place where injuries wont knock us out of our stride.
 
Did we drop any points with Carra at right back? I know we won a fair few. And Skirtel played one game because both Darby and Arbeloa were injured.

Or is just another pointless dig at Carra?
 
I don't think he was intentionally making a dig at Carra. Either way, I don't think many people are too enamoured with the idea of Carra at RB these days - he should stay in the middle.

Anyways, I didn't know Arbeloa was in the last year of his contract.. strange given that we made a concerted effort to tie other players down with new and improved deals. Perhaps Rafa is in favour of moving him on whether we get Johnson or not.

In an ideal world, I would like to keep him unless we get an offer too good to refuse, but I suppose 8M for him with one year left is not a bad deal. Can't imagine it's true though.

we beat manu at home with carra at right back but we draw against everton with carra at right back. it wasn't a dig at carra at all my basic point is we are stronger with carra in the middle and definately weaker when a dedicated fullback is missing.

I read somewhere that Real wants Arbeloa as a left back. Either way, it should be 10 mill..

No we didn't. In fact, I can only think of one dodgy game with Jamie at full back and plenty where he played well. Obviously he doesn't have the stamina to play there every week but we're not asking him to. And if Arbelo does go, Johnson, Darby and Carra in emergencies is more than enough.

what exactly is it you're trying to say? do you WANT to see carra at right back? Personally I thought carra was poor against everton and was repeatedly taken to the cleaners by leigton baines, your opinion is of course your own I however don't want to see either carra or skrtel at right back again.
 
I could ask the same of you. You're highlighting isolated minor mistakes to discredit Carra's abilty to slot in at right back if need be, and ignoring the many good performances and results with him there.

That aside, no one is saying they want Jamie as perma full back, merely that if Arbeloa does leave we'll have enough strength in depth with Johnson, Darby, who needs to given the chance, and in extreme cases, Carra.

of course I recognise jamie's good performances at right back, that's all well and good, I still don't want to see carra at right back. gerrard is probably STILL the best right back at the club I don't want to see him there either.

If we buy Johnson for 15 million he has to be first choice, and in that case we'd be better of cashing in on Arbeloa, who is unlikely to want to sit on the bench for the majority of the season, and give Darby his chance as cover.

That's the chance you have to take with these young lads. Just a pity he didn't do it sooner with Insua. It's what Ferguson does when he wants to free up funds for better players.

you need two competant players for every position. people go on about the injuries to gerrard and torres but so what, injuries are part and parcel of the game. as far as I'm concerned injuries are no longer a valid excuse for failure to challenge.
 
Darby had his contract extended earlyier in the season and is apparently highly rated. It's the Insua situation, we need to play the lad for him to progress now. I think he should be givenj an opportunity to stake a claim for RB undertsudy. Either that or it's a one year loan, but no-one's yet come back form a loan spell and been given a chance to crack the first team.

We need to decide what we're doing with Degen.

I don't think we should sell Arbeloa, however it depends on whether he's going to sign a new contract or not. I'm all fo0r screwing as much money out of Real Madrid as possible if we have to sell.

Stevie, Stevie, Stevie. If you don't think Johnson is better than Arbeloa (who we will get 8 - 10 M for anyway) then you've been smoking too much shit. Of course there is a premium when it comes to English players but we have to up the number of home grown players ASAP and Johnson is a prime example of fulfilling both of our needs, improving the team and English.

We should not think ourselves immune from Real / Barca. If they come knocking then any South American & Spanish players in the EPL are going to want to go there sooner or later.

BTW comments from Portsmouth Chairman Peter Storrie not as widely reported :

When asked if the transfer was between £15million and £18million, Storrie replied: "You may not be a million miles away from the mark." which could easily mean the fee is anywhere from £12million to £15million plus add-ons. There is an alternative though as now there is chatter of a 5M bid for Richards. Either way, and the fact that Arby didn't sign a new contract when everyone was seems to signify he is on his way, we need a damn good replacement.

The price reflects his age and the “English†premium.

I remember when he used to play at Chelsea and thinking there was always a mistake round the corner from him. I think the errors he makes for Portsmouth don’t get highlighted as much.
