London, June 13 :

Real Madrid are set to increase their spending spree, after an eight million pounds offer for Liverpool's Alvaro Arbeloa.

There is even speculation the Spanish billionaires will bid 15 million pounds for Chelsea's Ashley Cole to keep him away from Barcelona.

Just 24 hours after agreeing an 80 million pounds fee for Cristiano Ronaldo, Real president Florentino Perez contacted Liverpool with the official bid for right-back Arbeloa.

The Spain ace, 26, was a key player in Kop boss Rafa Benitez's team last season.

But Benitez will struggle to resist Madrid's offer after being told he needs to sell before he can make any major signings this summer, The S*n reports.

Arbeloa actually started his career at Real but played just two games for the club before moving to Deportivo La Coruna.

He was signed by Liverpool for 3 million pounds in January 2007 and Madrid is well aware of Liverpool's mounting financial problems, and convinced that they can prise Arbeloa back to Spain.

Having spent 62 million pounds on Brazilian superstar Kaka and agreeing Ronaldo's switch, Madrid are now turning their attentions to their defence. And they could snatch England ace Cole from Chelsea.

£8M would be a good deal, but considering Degens fitness record it would probably mean we have to buy 2 RB's and I'm not convinced it would be worth the hassle

The papers seem to think Glen Johnson will sign for us in the near future. Chelsea have had a 17 mill accepted, but he want to join us. As they owe us 7 mill from the Crouch transfer, we can get away with 10 mill. I really hope we sign him.

I can't believe the money that's supposedly being offered for our full-backs. This would be a great deal but the £6.5m for Drossena tops the lot. Sell, sell sell!

What's happened to Ramos?

He's going to be busy having his handsome lessons.

For fuck's sake, Hansern. The fact that Pompey owe us 7m for Crouch doesn't mean we can waive that and "get away with paying 10m" for Johnson.

We would still have paid 17m for a full back who I'd describe as promising and who cost 4m only a couple of years ago.

Kinel, if the press are to be believed we're selling our whole squad.

Johnson will go to Chelsea for some inflated fee...thankfully.

Brilliant. He has one year left on his deal and they are wiling to pay 8m. Sell, sell, sell! Then when we play them in next seasons Champ League hopefully he will give away a million pointless free kicks from being turned easy or pulling on shirts.

I like Arbeloa. Is Johnson really £9m better?
[/quote]

no.

I like Arbeloa too, not top quality but a steady player, cant see much advantage for getting johnson in his place tbh.

I can't see any. Johnson's better going forward but not as good at the defensive side which, like it or not, is still a major part of a fullback's role. He's simply not worth the extra money.

Shocked that so many of ye are so quick to yell sell sell sell. Arbeloa needs competition and a slight kick up the arse but do we really need or want to sell him? He did a fine job at RB considering that when fit he had too play nearly every game. He can cover at LB if needed to next season.

8 million is a good price for a player with one year left on his contract but I would be a bit hesistant until I knew who his replacement would be.

I heard they want Arbeloa for LB, Ramos might as well play at CB.

That's not how it works though, is it? The marginal improvement to go from a very good player to a potentially excellent player tends to be disproportionately expensive. I still have doubts about Johnson's defensive capabilities but he has improved significantly in that area over the last couple of years so there's no reason to assume the trend won't continue. He's very accomplished going forward too.

Under Rafa's tutorage, I think he could excellent for us.

As much as I would love to take £8M for Arbeloa, with it being Real I would deffo be after £10M like Ryan said, or the £8M upfront (no over 5 years BS).

very well said, totally agree.

I like Arbeloa. The criticism he gets on here goes way over the top.

There are flaws to his game, yeah, so he gives away the odd stupid free kick and is an awful crosser of the ball, but on the whole, he's pretty solid and when you consider his fee and many of the other RB's around, you can't complain too much (well, obviously you can, but you know what I mean).

8M doesn't really seem like enough. That's what we paid for Dossena. He's our first choice RB, he's in the Spanish squad and he's still relatively young. It'd have to be 10M+ to be more tempting.

Agree with that.
Arbeloa is a very decent if unspectacular right back and personally I really dont see the need to prioritize another one as long he is here. After all, at the start of last season most posters seemed content with "Hacksaw Jim" as his cover. Now the few times I have seen him, Degen hasn't exactly impressed but he did have a season almost completely written off by injury. If he was deemed good enough last season then I dont believe we have seen enough to disgard him for next. If he is to go then lets get a replacement for him or see if Darby is capable of making the step up.

And finally if we do really need an upgrade on Arbeloa, and I have my doubts on how significent an upgrade Johnston would be, we most definately should be looking for £10m + for Alvaro if we are paying £15m + for Glen Johnston.

'get away with £10m' - i presume you mean on top of cancelling the £7m debt from pompey? which would be the same as paying £17m...for glen johnson. that's not a deal i'd like to see happen, personally.

Arbeloa might want to leave and is in the final year of his contract, so no way are we getting anything above 10 million. Plus he's distinctly average.

With regards to buying players; we're not in any position to be picking and choosing fees in the current inflated market. If Rafa wants a player he should be allowed to pay the money, even if it's excessive.

I quite rate Arbeloa but ultimately Johnson is an upgrade on him. I don't feel entirely comfortable with a Arbeloa/Darby RB tandem, but I'm fine with Darby backing Johnson up. Funding the Johnson move by getting 8-10 M for Arbeloa is good business.

Either we decide Arbeloa is good enough (because we don't need both Arbeloa and Johnson at the club) or we use him to fund the Johnson move.
