I was disappointed that he left, but I don't blame him at all. This debate has been done to death and I think everyone must be sick of it. For the right price, I'd have him back for sure.

This exactly.

Lol at the username!

So we all complain about footballers not having loyalty etc and then we see this interview where the guy professes a long term love for our club and you denigrate him? Come on lads, for jakers sakes. How can we take your mutterings on Torres and masher seriously If this is how you speak of xabi..
What loyalty did he show? Lovely sound bites etc etc but he left us about a week before the start of a new season.
Fuck him, i hope him and his mates Ronaldo and Mourinho win fuck all.
I'd tend to agree with this stance, but you could argue this is a slightly different scenario in that as a club, we tried to fuck him off first. Loyalty is a two way thing and we (or rather, Rafa) whored him around Europe 12 months before.

Masher and Torres on the other hand...
I dont in any way loathe Xabi in the same way as the other two mate. I just dont wanna hear the sacharine superfan shit from a bellend who left us in the shit. He could have handed in a request FIRST day of the transfer window. He didnt he fucked around for months and we panic bought Aquilani and that was the beginning of the end.
sorry chap but you either have a useless memory or a very selective one . Everyone knew he was looking to leave from a very early stage and he confirms it here himself :

"As soon as the season finished I talked to the manager. I knew that maybe Madrid were coming and I said if the terms were good then I wanted to leave."

If there was any delay it was caused by Madrid not meeting our asking price and us playing hardball on this , knowing they were spending insane amounts of money that summer . Yeah yeah , he should have handed in a transfer request and gave up his share of the deal if he really wanted it to move along , well they never do that and i doubt clubs expect or need them to do this when it comes to a big money deal ...that's just an easy way for clubs to throw heat on the player and win fan favour when a deal is stalling.

"Panic bought Aguilani" ....what ? his name was mentioned as a replacement for weeks and that was pretty much confirmed when we bought him the next day after alonso was sold . He was earmarked for quite a while.

Anyway , as has been said , this debate has been done to death , i just don't understand this stance that every player who leaves us has "fucked us over" and "if they loved us they never would have left" . Surely he can leave for personal reasons , return to his country of birth, play for a huge team there but still be allowed to express how he loved his time with us and the city .

It's simply untrue to say that "every player who leaves" gets those accusations thrown at him. Sami didn't for example. I really don't want to rehash this all again, but there was more to it than you say.

Ok obviously not every player , but nearly every player we feel is moving to a so called 'bigger' team than us . It just one of those stupid modern aspects of football , ever player who leaves your club and is not shite or close to retiring is a traitor and should be hated .

I just don't get this big bad thing Alonso did .

To me it's pretty simple :
he was off form by his standards ;
rafa got pissed at him for choosing to be at his missus's side when having their first child and not playing Inter;
for these reasons and maybe more Rafa decided he wanted Barry and to use Alonso's sale to fund the deal ;
nothing came about on either front so he stayed and his form improved ;
still feeling unsettled and knowing Madrid were interested he decided he wanted to leave, try something else in his career and return home which probably suited Rafa anyway to a degree as he still wanted to use the large fee to balance the books and fund other transfers ;
deal dragged on as madrid wouldn't meet asking price and we (rightly) wouldn't budge as knew they had a huge budget that season ;
Deal finally went through and we signed Aquilani the next day.

What more to it was there than that ? He was never going to hand in a transfer request or admit he wanted to move as it would have been suicide had everything collapsed .

Biggest mistake he made was to join Madrid who are a bunch of cocks but obviously being Spanish be probably views it slightly different .

That's actually a pretty full account of the situation as I understood it at the time, quite a bit more so than what you wrote earlier, so fair dos.

It's just your last para.that I might still question. Xabi's a Basque, so until he joined Real I'd have expected him to share that view of them as a bunch of cockends. But then I'd have expected Owen to take that view of the Mancs, so Xabi's not alone.

Well when he left Sociedad their fans pleaded with him to join us such is their dislike for Real and being a basque himself you'd think he'd feel the same. Obviously not though.

Yeah I always wondered about that. Is he BASQUE or did he just play for them separatist fellers

It was an LFC.tv interview so he was never going to put the club down but I do think that his love for the club/city still remains strong.
But like some others on here I wish he would just move on and shut up.

I just watched the interview and now feel annoyed with Rafa and Xabi all over again.

It just made me feel regret about 2007 and 2009 all over again. Done with looking back, he moved on, we should too. Obviously he was gonna say nice things about us especially on LFC, I don't doubt that he thinks fondly of the club, but then again so does Mascherano. But what good does it do us?

People talking about him coming back, he's 30 now, so beyond this summer why would we even want him back?

Because he's highly influential, excellent and contrary to the wide held belief that people over 30 are finished they often do a great job for new clubs ie. Gary Mac.

Id have Xabi back in a heartbeat!!

Meh don't know how long you've been about for Slugmonster, but I was never much of an Alonso fan

Ah well.....cant win em all I suppose 😉

Thanks Sunny. It's a bit off him going to Real then. I thought he was more of a class act? Anyway - Its clear for him he didn't want to play fir a manager that wanted to dump him so I don't begrudge the move at all. I'd be the same and admire the principle. I'd take him back before the downhill trudge starts and it's clear he loved the club. In no way is he kissing the badge in that interview.

Xabi will always be welcomed back with open arms. Class act and if it be told, we still haven't filled his large boots!
