Well, we won 1-0. That's the positives over with. Benitez and Liverpool FC has run its course.

Reina: 6. Unemployed. They had little interest in attacking

Carra (7). Industrious and safe as houses. Good display in a position he dislikes.
Agger (6). Did OK, had little to do.
Skittles (6). See Agger
Aurelio (7). A vast improvement on Insua, which is hardly a compliment, but anyway.

Kuyt (4). Wasteful and created little. Not at his best.
Masher (7). Our best player since Xmas. Another quality display and some good passing, too.
Purple (4). Oh fucking dear. Some decent passes, but not enough, and not in the right areas. A total disaster of a signing.
Riera (3). Started OK, but after about 10 minutes decided to just....stop. So laughably slow.

Gerrard (6). Tried his best, but left to do everything himseld.

Eggnog (5). Gets an extra point for the goal, because he was diabolical apart from that.

Subs:

Patches (7). Trickery, skill, attacking play. Good Lord.
Babel: (7). See above. Another good display from the bench.

Little to disagree with there, if I were being pedantic I'd give Mascher and extra point.

I wouldn't give Aurelio a 7 based on the number of times he passed it backwards instead of forwards just because he won't use his right foot even for a 10yard fucking pass. Does my head in

I don't agree with those last two, Sunny. Aurelio was no worse than the rest in terms of crabwise passing, and Babel was direct and dangerous when he came on. (Can't believe I just posted that last bit, but credit where it's due.)

Unfortunately it's difficult to argue against Bren.

We have a team rammed with no more than average players and in many cases less than average.
I think our problem is that we all end up arguing who is shite and who is not by comparison to the alternative we have available or out injured.
Riera was diabolical last night, I like him as a rule, but only as he brings some balance to the side, that is not enough really is it? Dirk seems to be a bit of a favourite among some because of his work rate, and his heart (difficult to argue), oh and the odd goal, but is that enough either. Lucas? He is getting bulled up , not because he is any good , but because he has been the only viable alternative for vast parts of the season and he less shite than he was last year, that is certainly not good enough ...or is it?
N'gog, people see little glimpses occasionally, but we is as weak as maidens water and needs too much time most of the time, can't play up front on his own and is no more than an "apprentice striker"
Babel, I thought he was his usual self when he came on, my lad agrees with most of you , and thought he looked OK, but was there a final result, he saw a bit of the ball, but it is so easy to take it off him.
Aqualani ......... who knows? Maybe he will, maybe he won't, but it was a ridiculous fucking gamble that should never have been taken, knowing what we know now, and what anyone with a hole in their arse knew was going to happen in our striker department the money should have been spent on a striker. He also needs to play further forward, he is lost as a holding midfield player, he just can't do it.
Why oh why won't Benitez give Pacheco a bit more of a chance. I was almost trying telepathy with Rafa last night , we needed someone who was not so fucking predictable as everyone else last night and that was him....lo and behold he makes the goal.
Carra has rallied a lot this season, but how much life is there in the old war horse?
We are going backwards at a fast rate of knots. A couple of years ago we were talking about one or two missing pieces of the jigsaw, to be honest that jigsaw looks a right fucking mess from where I am sat now.
Kuyt, Riera, Aurellio, Benayoun, Aqualiani, N'gog, Babel, Lucas, Insua, Kyriakos , have all played a major part in the season, some because they are chosen and some through injury, some of them should be lucky to make the bench in a decent squad.
I have not even mentioned Maxi
Riena, Johnson, Carra (time is not on his side), Gerrard, Mascher , Torres are class, Skrtle and Agger are good enough. We need another five good players to make up a half decent squad, and two of them need to be strikers.
The Romanians are a better team than some gave credit for, but we really should have spanked them, in the end we were pleased with a 1-0 win.

regards

PS Amber C. You are right Aurellio is so one footed it's unreal, I thought Riise was bad , but Jeez

I think a lot of our problem is that we have lost pieces of the fucking jigsaw

watching that game last night you have to wonder what aurelio has done to piss off rafa because I want to know in what shape or form insua is better than him. oh, aurelio actually knows how to take a corner.

I agree. But I dislike Babel so much he automatically get's a -1 from me.

I think Brendan's ratings are pretty much on the money. Riera looks shit without an overlapping fullback to give him a bit of space (as he can't create it for himself) in the same way that Insua looks shit without the protection of a wide player who actually stays wide. I think they work well together though, so if either plays, I'd like to see the other there too.

Pacheco was the only positive of the night. If that boy makes it at this club it'll be thoroughly deserved because he'll have to do it the hard way. It's funny, the commentator said at the beginning of the match that if Pacheco gets a chance it'll likely be because Liverpool are in a strong position. I called it right there and then that if he gets a chance it'll be because all of our so-called first-teamers have categorically failed to make an impact and we're desperate for someone who can provide an attacking spark. Dani did that, but it really isn't the kind of environment you want to be blooding youngsters in. I'm glad he got his chance though and I hope Rafa gives him the opportunity to build on it.

N'gog got a goal, but was wasteful for the vast majority of the match. He shouldn't be playing on his own. In fact, he shouldn't be playing at all for a club with our ambition, but such is the sparsity of talent in our forwards department that beyond playing Kuyt on his own, we're left with little choice. How on earth Rafa let it get to this stage I'll never know.

And that was one of the most cumbersome, ponderous, unadventurous and predictable midfield performances I've seen since.... well, since the last time we played. I've seen more ambition from the under-nine's at my local park. During training.

It's worth noting that we improved markedly when Pacheco came on, and *SHOCK HORROR* Stevie moved back into the midfield. For all his copious scribbling, I doubt that featured in Rafa's notes though, and fully expect to see Lucas re-instated for Citeh.

I'm struggling to find a reason to watch us at the moment, I really am. I feel like I'm doing it out of habit more than anything.

I think he's pissed Rafa off by being too injured to play.

not a valid excuse aurelio has been fit for ages.

Riera put in one of the worst performances Ive ever seen in a red shirt last night, after we failed to break them down in the first 5 minutes he just decided he couldnt give a fuck

Kuyt gave the sort of performance that gives weight to the argument he just cannot be an effective wide player

Bear in mind this was against a team that hasnt played a competitive game in 2 months, and they were still sharper and quicker than Riera

Babel did more in 20 minutes in an attacking sense than anybody else bar Gerrard managed in the whole game. Hes infuriating but at least he finally seems to have gotten the message

I wouldn't bet your house on it.

He probably cared more than any other player on the pitch, but he didn't offer more. His contribution going forward was very minimal.

His spin to lose his opposite number followed by a perfectly weighted pass to release (Kuyt?) was one of the few moments of genuine quality the whole night.

He dislikes playing out wide these days, but still put in his usual shift. It wasn't all as effective as that positively Brazilian bit of skill, but he was always available. And he had the great advantage of not being Degen.

Then again, when has JC ever offered anything going forward?

He shat himself every time he stepped over the half way line, dating all the way back to the days of Houllier.
