Rafa raps Babel: Liverpool boss issues warning to £11m winger

By John Edwards Last updated at 10:14 PM on 21st August 2009

Rafa Benitez fired a blunt message to Ryan Babel yesterday, warning him time is running out to salvage his Liverpool future after his £11.5million move from Ajax two years ago.

Ahead of Monday's home game with Aston Villa, Benitez said: 'Ryan has to give something to us this time and he knows it. He will have opportunities to prove himself with so many games coming up, but it is important he has the right mentality.

'Maybe there were some problems adapting to a new style when he arrived as a young player.

'He knows what is going on here now and hopefully can perform better. He accepts he has to perform at a different level this year.'
----------

There's no excuses any more, he was abysmal against Tottenham. He really needs to perform. I haven't lost all hope for him yet...

DITTO!!!

im soooooooooo sorry to sound pedantic but winning the league is our monkey, and untill were sure (like it used to be) we'll pull liverpool from pillar to post, it would be great to have them glory days back, be even better if we done it sooner rather than 26 years later.

I'm having trouble decoding some of this stuff. Fortunately we have a number of members here who are fluent in gibberish, so hopefully one of them will able to decipher it for us.

what did our leader say in the lucas interview about it being easy to pick on the less superstar players after the spurs game.

one game in and rafa has a public go at this lad. go rafa you bloody hypocrite.

the fact that i agree with you is irrelevant seeing as you bought this lad in the 1st place, oh was it parry when keane failed? 😉

Babel's been shit for three seasons Rage and consistently flattered to deceive. His attitude stinks aswell in comparison to Lucas.

oh i agree with most of that though i think he was as good as we could expect in his first season mark.

its just the hypocrisy of our leader that annoys me here.

babel will be sat in the changing room thinking 'that lucas has cost us games last season and still gets played, me i got injury time sub appearances and scored the winner against utd and hardly ever see 2 games in a row - i don't need this, o could be mc B'

It's a bit of a myth that Lucas has cost us games. We went to Old Trafford and won with him, the only games I remember him costing us in was the cup game against Everton and the other game where he gave away a penalty, all in the middle of a bad run for the team and a bad run for him. His record for games won is excellent.

I agree Babel had a good first season in terms of goals, but from there we expected him to push on and cut out the inconsistencies and become more than just a player who could come on and make a difference against tired legs, he doesn't even do that anymore. Maybe it's a confidence thing but he looks well short in terms of ability and intelligence on the pitch, and then to be lapping up with all of this rap shit like he's some superstar, it all leaves a sour taste for the fans.

He needs to pull his finger out this season, and so does Lucas, but I don't think there's any hypocrisy in backing a player who's clearly a a consummate pro and has showing willing to improve on his flaws. Babel still, after three seasons, looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights and has shown no willingness to try to improve and look like he actually wants it.

Two game in and Rafa's given two strong public messages to individuals.

Odd

Why is everyone saying it's odd? They've both been here a while now, and ditto his message to Torres and Gerrard.

If the responses continue to be like the performance against Stoke, he can do it all season if he wants.

In the full interview, Rafa actually finishes with; I think Ryan can have a great season.

So, it sounds more like a kickinthearseandgetyourgameon than having a go at him.

Nothing would please me more than for Babel to step up, but I've lost nearly all my belif in him.

It's not what he's saying that's the problem, but there's only public criticism you can dish out before it starts affecting squad morale, so I hope this doesn't become a weekly event.

He's going to be worth next to fuck all next summer if/when he has another bad season.
I think we should off loaded him this summer, being realistic, the chances of this 'potential' coming good now are very very slim.

maybe he'll have a great world cup and we sell him for loads

amid the rise of Lucas... we know have this seasons official scapegoat!

'we lost that game because the substitutes we rely on are shite. ala Babel...'

'fuck me.. I could swear I was watching a black Milan Baros!'

'Djibs was better than this cnut!'

etc...

is it just me or is any one else getting annoyed with Rafa for airing his critical views on our players in public? - contrast this with Fergie publicly supporting berbatov and owen - Rafa should keep these sentiments in house - his team selection says it all.

That's a completely different scenario.

The media are on Owen's back already, and he's a new signing, while Fergie has got alot to justify with Berbatov because of the transfer fee, he's already being deemed a bit of a failure (though his contribution last season was significant enough). So he's got to back him otherwise he'd be admitting he made a mistake, and let's face it, after losing two top quality attackers in the Summer he's not going to say anything different really, is he?

they maybe different situations but the principle is the same - if you are unhappy with your player keep your views inside, otherwise you might as well have players having a go at amangers in the public, which we would al find unacceptable. In this week along he has a public critique of torres and then babel - now I m a massive rafa fan and would like not one other here, but this part of his management could be better. Let the match day selection make your views clear to the public - give him a bollocking and warning inside but love and protect him from others when dealing with the outside.
