Rafa manipulates the fans - Jamie Tight Pants

Former Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp has questioned Rafael Benitez's management and claims that he manipulates the club's fans.

On the eve of Liverpool's crunch Champions League showdown in Hungary against Debrecen - where they could fail to reach the last 16 for the first time under Benitez - Redknapp offered a wide-ranging criticism of the Anfield boss.

Redknapp believes Benitez should abandon the controversial zonal marking system and questioned whether Fernando Torres will want to stay if Liverpool are only in the Europa League next season.

Redknapp, who played more than 300 games for the club between 1991 and 2002, said: "They have won one in 10 now and fans will be thinking. They are firmly behind him, though, he manipulates the fans, he gets them how he wants them.

"But there comes a time, if they go out of Europe this week and then lose at Everton, that the fans are swayed and will say that we have to look at him now.

"That team is not really going anywhere. The problem you will get is that will Fernando Torres want to play in the Europa League? I don't think so.

"If they don't get into the top four at the end of this season, it will be a major problem.

"You have huge problems going on behind the scenes with the owners, but it is too easy to blame that. On the pitch the players are not playing well enough, that's a fact."

On Liverpool's defensive problems, Redknapp was equally damning.

He added on Sky Sports: "A few years ago zonal marking was the best format because they were one of the best defenders from set pieces.

"But the reason for that was that they had Peter Crouch and Sami Hyypia, two guys who are 6ft 5in plus.

"It doesn't matter how you defend when the ball comes in, zonal or man to man, they will clear it. Now you have a situation where people are not taking responsibility.

"You might have to turn round and say that zonal isn't working, let's go man for man. At the moment he is giving players excuses, teams look at it and think they will score against Liverpool."

Anyone would think he was a manc and had never played for us, not just with this but his comments in the past.

I agree with some of what he says, but the overall tone is surprising (or maybe not these days).

Quite. There are some legitimate questions to be asked about what's going on at LFC but, having taken the Sky Sports shilling, Redknapp's clearly lined up with their editorial policy.

Where's macca when we need him anyway? 😉

Cor, I could stay like this forever, dearest Dad!

So could I, darlin' son!

Cor, 9-1, eh?

For sure!

And all achieved wiv a team full of English lads, born and bred!

Er, just about, yeah.

It just proves me point yet again - you are the bestest manager in the whole wide world, dearest Dad!

Ha ha, well, thanks for that, darlin' son. I just keep it simple, play English lads and don't kill 'em or murder 'em or crucify 'em. As Oswald Mosley used to say, "It's a simple race made complicated by immigration". Or summat like that. Anyways, it goes to show you what man-marking can do when you've got tall lads like Crouchie at the wrong end of the pitch, eh?

Nail on head, dearest Dad! Now that Liverpool don't have the big lads who could head the ball away as zonal markers, surely even a foreigner can see that they need to get their smaller lads to head the ball away as man-markers? I mean, the ball's still round in Spain, ain't it? Why all the confusion?

Beats me, darlin' son. Maybe it's all that mixing fish and meat they do. Scrambles the brains.

Is that why they all have lisps?

Maybe, darlin' son. That's a very perceptive point, for sure.

And why are they having so many injuries? I mean, you'd never see an English team, managed by an English manager, get so many injuries, would you, dearest Dad?

Nope, for sure, darlin' son. That's because the English are notoriously 'ealth conscious. Look at me old mate Sam Allardyce. He even makes his missus take an ice bath every mornin' after she's taken the bins out!

'Ow is Sam now, by the way?

Not bad. His heart's just been restarted. For sure. And he certainly ain't got no kidney stones like Rafa 'ad! That's for sure!

I just can't get me head around Benitez. He uses publicity all the time, he hides behind this nice guy persona, he wheels and deals, he doesn't seem sure about Crouchie, he...

Let's not get too personal, darlin' son. Not everyone can get the best out of Crouchie.

But you can, dearest dad!

Yes, for sure, I can.

Is he playing in the next match?

Nah.

But at least that means there's another Englishman on the bench! And one who can come on and head the ball away at corners!

You know, darlin' son, you ought to manage, you really should, for sure!

Aw, thanks, dearest Dad! But I've got all these business plans at the moment.

Wozzat, yer Icons magazine? Louise's underwear download shop?

Yeah, both of those, but I'm also opening me own restaurant!

Really? For sure? That's exciting, darlin' son! Whay sort of restaurant is it?

An Italian restaurant!

Cor! That's me favourite!

An' if that goes well I'm hoping to open a Tapas bar!

Darlin' son, you're a flippin marvel!

An' so are you, dearest dad! Let's go off for a pizza!

Thought you'd never ask, darlin' son! For sure!

the zonal marking isn't working currently because the defenders are not attacking the cross when it comes in. they are reacting too slow meaning the opposition player attacking the ball has the momentum.

The only ones that are manipulated are the SoS.
Beside that Jamie is quite spot on.

Not at all and its an easy reply.
1 win out of ten is not good enough whether its Rafa or anyone else.
Is our manager imune from any criticism? He would have been fired in most european leagues. Not here and rightly so Id say.
That doesnt mean we can accept mediocrity and cant raise our voice and say so.

And we all know his little games with the fans in his childish battle with the yanks a couple of years ago.
That worked with some of them (the SoS) not me in any case.
I firmly believe its his last season.

Do you think Shankley ever had a bad run like this?

Evidence?

Evidence of the contrary?

The interview he just gave in which he said he'll have failed if he doesn't bring the title to Anfield.

But in any case that's not the way it works. If you make a charge against someone, it's for you to prove it. I won't hold my breath waiting.

Not in swiss Law.
The plan was to win the league in 5 years. He failed but he looked happy with the 2nd spot last season.
He certainly didnt take the league result last year as a failure.
I think Shankly would, as my signature suggests. That was the point and could be an evidence.

So if you're charged with murder for example and you aren't able to prove your innocence you're going to prison for the rest of your life?

Somehow I can't believe this.

Edit:

I had a closer look on this. You're wrong, Le Chacal. Switzerland joined the ECHR and therefore is obliged to its Article 6. It says "Everyone charged with a criminal offence shall be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law."

I presume that it would even apply to Mr Rafael Benitez.
