also worth pointing out his first signing was Xabi and he's just sold him for the THIRD highest fee an English club has ever received so that's good. (Ronaldo being the highest)

Parry did not know how to play the transfer game, I think Rafa knows how to deal with those on the continent better.

Rafa's done the club some good with this. It will certainly help us when it comes to future attempts to buy our players. The enduring problem, however will surely remain: namely, other clubs - especially British clubs - wildly over-pricing players we want to sign. I'm not sure what one can do about that, practically, apart from do what we're doing with the changes at the academy. When one looks back on the money we had to spend on the likes of Pennant and Keane, and now Johnson, it's painful.

We've signed an 18million pound right back and are about to sign someone that gets more broken than Harry Kewell. I'll reserve judgement until the end of the season on this one.

I am not particularly pleased with the transfer window so far at all, even when we have signed Aquilani i think you would be hard pushed to say that we are a better stronger team than in june, so despite being RCDNW brigade member I have to say im a little bit more than fucked off with him.

Arbeloa sold cheaply and replaced with Johnson, not a player I particularly admired, at high cost.
Dossenna being sold when we have little cover for the glass Aurellio.
No top attacker bought.
Sold a key midfield player to a direct rival.

All in all on the surface of thing Im haing to look hard at that list and feel pleased. Granted the clubs 40m loss and therefore the budget and the ludicrous market would hamstring any manager but I would have much prefered we hadnt have sold Alonso and had have signed an attacker not a defender.

....who may well be the clubs first choice right back for the best part of the next decade, and is good enough to be the England fullback for the next 5+ years. Boo hoo.

Apologies, will try harder in future.

a) bought the best right back in the league.
b) stuck to his guns and got 30+ mil for a midfielder who juve were unwilling to spend 18 the previous year.
c) brought a replacement pretty darn quickly (although there are question marks over his fitness).

rafa's first year in charge of transfers seems okay to me so far

[/quote]The answer is clear Macca. We have to sign these kids BEFORE they reach the premiership. The fees from the Endsliegh leagues are reasonable, its once a premierleague team has got them the price multiplies by about 6.
Lescott, Young, Lennon, Johnson, Jagielka etc were all bought for reasonable fees and are now through the roof.
This year your Ebanks, Delph's, Surman the lads from Sheffield etc are all being picked up by other clubs and they may or may not make it but if they do its a massive investment, if they dont you get your money back.
We have to move quicker for these lads, and if needs be loan them out.

Rafa clearly is committed to signing kids for the future, but just not English/British ones.

I love Rafa and wouldn't swap him with any other manager - we have progressed so much under him and will win the EPL this season.

Under the last few managers the transfer windows were a joke in that nobody wanted ANY of our players bar Gerrard and anytime we did sell we sold at a considerable loss; Diouf, Cisse, Heskey etc or were fucked-over by a lack of foresight in the cases of McManaman and Owen.

Under Rafa, sure we've had a few dodgy ones i.e. we will never get our money back on Dossena and maybe Babel's value has dropped a few mill BUT in the main his wheeling-and-dealing has been top class.

Buys Alonso for £10m sells him for £30m, Buys Torres for £22m and could sell him now for £60m, Kuyt and Benayoun are both worth more than we paid and Mascher has doubled in value in one season. Agger and Skrtel would both fetch ovet £10m and Riera is now a regular in the Spanish national team and would probably be worth £12m+. Pepe would go for more than £20m.

The other encouraging thing is tha the top teams; Madrid, barca etc all come knocking on our door trying to pinch our talent - this is a much better state of affairs than under GH when they would come looking only at SG.

Our squad improves every year under Benitez and I think this season finally it will pay dividends.

Cheers Mark, it's rather perverse that I don't want us to sell any of our talent but am still thrilled to see other top teams cast envious glances at Mascher, Torres, Pepe, Agger etc. None of our players under GH were ever linked with top teams because they just weren't good enough.

Unfortunately Pesam we dont have the financial resources to kick on and win without having to cash in first....

A rather wonderful selling club.

Great post.

I don't know if we'll end this summer "improved" but it looks reasonably promising. I question whether RB really was our biggest priority, but Johnson's a player I've admired and put forward for the last two years so I've no real complaints there. Alonso, well, I wish Rafa had treated him better - like many I don't easily dismiss the tension caused by wanting to be at his childs birth and Rafa trying to flog him - but at the end of the day he wanted to leave and I'm optimistic Aquilani will be an inspired signing. He's hugely talented.

So far it's gone okay, and I'm happy with the quality of players we've bought in. But unless we bring in another source of goals we won't start this season better off, IMO.

Finally accepting that we got £30m for Alonso then?

all this optimisism is nice to see but there were loads that wanted him gone in jan. LOADS.

Thats all in the past Spidey, everyone appreciates our manager now (for at least another week anyway).

Is the right answer.

The thing is (with regards to loaning them out) is that the biggest success stories have been those players who've played week in, week out for these Premiership sides. I think the chances of success go down markedly when the route taken is to loan them out to shit sides for a few years. Besides, we're obviously in no position to spend 6-10M on a lower league player and then loan them out.
